Also, Lou Gehrig and Jimmy Foxx played first base, that is obviously an easier position to play than 2nd base. Hornsby's .401 is still better than either Gehrig or Foxx. Posted By: <b>Dylan</b><p>Its not quite up there with the years Gehrig and Foxx put up but Banks had a helluva '58 with .313 47 HR 129 RBI<br />Pujols played a good portion of games at 1st base(though played OF too) in 2003 with .359 43 HR 124 RBI. I dont think any infielders, or maybe anyone period is gonna touch Hornsby's 1922 stats!

Posted By: <b>Bill Stone</b><p>I just got my copy of the SABR Baseball List & Record Book in the mail yesterday and it is fascinating to read --a quick look at just two catagories shows Rogers Hornsby as having the highest career batting average (.358) by a right-handed batter and the record for the highest career on base percentage by a right- handed batter (.434).

Keep in mind he qualified (403 ABs) in all three categories:<br /><br />BA: .194<br />HR: 0<br />RBI: 13<br /><br />Last in the league in all three! <br /><br />Also, throw in 61 Ks for some extra perspective.
