Chasing Chase through T and E cards

4 Attachment(s)
I have embarked on an exciting (to me anyway) new project. I know there are some advanced Hal Chase collectors on this board, and I have really, really enjoyed reading some of the old threads about those collections. Fast forward to now, and I have fallen in love with many of his cards. This is particularly true of his T206 portraits, but he also has several caramel issues I like. This is going to tie in nicely with the fact that there are a ton of cards/sets/backs that I would like to be able to acquire. There's no way I could ever build them all, and I probably couldn't afford a big time HOFer example for all the sets, but Mr. Chase seems like a great choice. I know he's not a HOFer, but he was quite a player, and I really like his cards. It is modest, but I have picked up my first two.

Nice choice Robert. Prince Hal was a very good first baseman in his day. It's too bad he's not in the Hall. That SGC 30 pink portrait is really nice looking.

Here's my E93 example of Hal.

I think collecting by player is a good way to collect. Here's a recent one, collected toward the set.

Great stuff, guys! The T213s and E93 are on my want list.

Your choice of Chase is an excellent one.

I've been chasing Chase since 1981. The blue portrait Chase is my favorite T206. Here is my near-complete blue Chase run (missing CAROLINA BRIGHTS & DRUM).

That e98 is awesome. It looks like it was made yesterday. (I'm just joking.)

Here's a couple more from T213-2. I have the "with Trophy" T213's that I will post tomorrow. Chase with trophy is one of my favorite prewar cards. He must have been highly regarded at that time for them to make that card.

Thanks!

I had a great PSA 6 Pink Chase years ago that I sold when SGC wouldn’t cross it over to an 80 because of a corner wrinkle. Still wish I had that one back. That was truly a blazer.

The BSF cards are all blazers. Despite their populations, I remain drawn to them like a moth to a bright light.

I do believe that those are the four E98 colors. In my experience (especially post Black Swamp), the blue is the most difficult.

We need Jeff L to come on and show us some of his really rare Chase items, like the Rose postcard.

Here is a D chase from the past collection. I was walking out for the last time on the last day of the National, many years ago, and this caught the corner of my eye. John Richmond's partner had it and I can't remember his name now. Super nice guy...can picture him and think his name was John also....I hate getting old

Hal isn't in the Hall of Fame for a pretty good reason.

The SABR biography on Hal begins with this paragraph:

Hal Chase, whose big league career lasted from 1905 to 1919, was the most notoriously corrupt player in baseball history. He was also, according to many of those who saw him play, the greatest defensive first baseman ever. A cocky, easygoing Californian, Chase was the first homegrown star of the New York Highlanders (later the Yankees), but he wore out his welcome with them, as he did with just about every other team he played for during his fifteen years in the major leagues.

But his cards are great. I've only got one T206 in my collection, and chose one of him (throwing, dark cap.)

I know he was a corrupt player and cheated quite often for the right price (or not), but for his playing skill he was one of the best first baseman ever in baseball. Cobb was a dirty player and notoriously bad human being too but he is in the Hall. I understand why Chase is not, but he is a HOF worthy player.

Not T or E cards, but fun Game cards. Note the two different team designations...his card in these sets helps date the National Game as being produced before the Tom Barker, as he was traded from the Yankees to the White Sox on June 1, 1913.

Cool Thread.

Chase does have some nice looking cards.

I found it interesting that not one of the cards in this thread depict him holding a bat (maybe I missed one), but there is an actual Chase model bat in the thread.

Was he a hall of fame worthy hitter?
and.... can anyone show a Chase with bat card?

Off the top of my head, this is the only one I can think of. T202 Paskert/ Magee, Chase Ready For The Squeeze Play. He's batting in the photo on the center panel. I think part of the reason for so few batting poses of Chase is the massive repetition of the same two or three photos on the majority of his cards.
