hi Mike

Good to meet you at Natl!

I have been moving house since the National- haven't had a chance to do anything with cards. Will post a response when I have a little time. Didn't see many Worches in Atlantic City...

MartyFromCANADA 08-29-2016 12:05 PM

Hello Worch collectors,

The checklist for this set includes George Gibson, who would have been the Pittsburgh manger at the time. Do any of you know if this card exists?
Does anyone have a scan?

Thanks, Marty

timn1 09-01-2016 11:37 AM

haven't seen one

but there are a lot of the major leaguers that haven't been seen, at least recently. One of the old timers from whom the checklists were derived (such as Larry Fritsch) would be the likeliest to have confirmation. I know he had a lot of Worches. Until Larry's collection comes into the hobby we may be stuck with the checklists.

On the other hand, if someone does confirm Gibson to you, I would like to know about it too!

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks for the info Tim.

My only current Worch...Love some of these real photo type cards. It really shows the player's features and lets you get a better idea of them than most of the non real photo type cards we collect....

Reviving the thread

Hi everyone,

Thanks to all who have posted in this long-lived and informative thread over the past 5 years (wait... what? What happened to those five years?)

I am still actively researching the Worch sets and would love to get any additional info that any of you have about variations, additions to checklists, and images of certain players that supposedly exist but have not been seen lately.

I am also gathering scans of as many Worches as I can find from the web, from N54, auction houses, and so on. I will post a list of the images I need for the "virtual collection," and hopefully some of you can help with those-

Always looking for Worches that I need, and I do have a couple of nice dupes to swap for them.... (sorry Leon for the BST violation) :D

Tim

Worch AA scans needed

Hi all,

I would love to verify the existence of some of these players in the Worch American Association set.

Braman
James Brown
Coleman
Fette
Guiliani (portrait)
Joyner
Mowry (batting)
Packard
Ruble (background visible)
Shiver
Sundra
Van Atta

I do believe the above players exist, because the most complete collection I am aware of has them in SGC graded form, although I have not seen them.

The players below are more doubtful. That extensive collection does not contain them, nor have they turned up in my net searches. They are either in an SCD or Beckett checklist, but we know sometimes those sources were prone to mistakes or even to making up nonexistent "cards". I personally doubt the existence of many or most of these guys in Worch, so if you do have one, PLMK!

Berger (checklists may be mistaken in listing Wally Berger (MLB) here)
Boken
Fischall
Grimes
Hunter
Mails
Mills
Norman
Petty (outfield wall visible)
Rezotko
Rigney
Stine
Charles Wilson

....I previously posted these in the recent monthly "pick-ups" threads ( I think ? ) but never got around to adding them to the project thread.... the Huck Betts is from Thankgiving --not a lot of Huck Betts cards out there---..there's more Worch pick-ups lying around......lemme look....

...really want to see the most recent "complete set" checklist ;; I hope I'm closing in on fifty percent.....

The Saints Poster :

http://www.net54baseball.com/attachm...1&d=1395076062[/QUOTE]

...I've been working on ( actually "picking away at") the other poster from this collection of two , the one with the 19 Millers but here's a view of the Saints poster---the lower right hole is where Larry Rosenthal (batting ) goes back into when he's all cleaned up.......these are positioned onto the back of the large posterboard so that the white borders are not visible but they're all complete ; old brittle kid's construction paper tape is holding them in place... I'll send a list of names in the order of the cards' positions this weekend sometime...

Hi Mike,

Have you ever seen the Worch George Gibson?

timn1 07-01-2017 05:40 PM

Some inquiries

Hi all,

In response to PMs from folks about specific players-

Andrews and Gibson I have not confirmed in Worch, but there are a lot of MLB players, mostly commons, hiding in the bushes. Like some other issues, because you could request the players you wanted, stars and HOFers are seen a lot more than commons.

And I am sure for those chasing the set it keeps it a lot of fun. Great looking Dizzy card above, don't see too many of those, nor many of the others either.

Just checking but does anyone have a picture of Roy Spencer's Worch? Always been curious if he's listed Cleveland or not

timn1 07-05-2017 08:26 AM

No Spencer

Hi Jack,
I don't have a image of Spencer; Mike G. may have one, since he seems to have at least as many Worches as I do-

"Gene Trow" and "Bill McWilliams"...in the slow process of cleaning off eighty years of grime ; they were exposed to the atmosphere but fortunately not to sunlight ; still crisp and a lot of gloss remaining...the attribution reads "Photo By Saint Paul Daily News" ; the "Saint" is completely spelled out ; on some others they used the abbreviation "St.".....

the Saints poster

Hi Mike,
So do I understand you correctly that these are full-size cards that look like they were collected separately and then fitted into the poster (as opposed to a poster from which individuals were cut)?

Tim

MikeGarcia 07-07-2017 01:43 PM

Yup

...they are very well-done home-made posters -- nineteen Millers and twenty Saints , both "1935"

..cards are intact....

...possibly some new vars. and even new confirmations of your rumored names..

..no Gibson or Crabtree or Spencer or Andrews though...

..

Bugsy 07-07-2017 01:53 PM

I actually believe those posters were issued by Worch.

Bugsy 07-07-2017 01:53 PM

They were found in St. Paul, the same city where Worch operated.

timn1 07-07-2017 03:40 PM

Mike, do you agree that it seemed to have been a Worch issue? It makes sense to me. I know one person I spoke to sees it as more of a Saint Paul team issue of 1935. I would like to get all the names from the poster, which I still don't have. I can get about half, which I'm about to do-

Indeed, it is. I'll try and post a pic later this evening. Can't find another of this particular card anywhere online. Did spot the other variation without the box around the text.

Sharp looking card Andrew. I thought SGC puts them in a Mylar Sleeve and then the holder? Is the plastic holder acid free? I'm not to famerial with the kind of holders they use.

Hi all,
Still obsessed with the Worches over here. I continue to compile new variations to the checklist, which is ever-expanding. If you have acquired any recently that you think might be uncataloged, let me know-

I am also trying to compile scans of all the cards. I need scans of all these MLB players. Please let me know if you can supply any, or even just confirm their existence.

Hi "Mike,"
I know, I wondered whether the Burleigh Grimes might be a phantom thread from the Berley in the AA set - especially since no one has actually produced a Burleigh for inspection. But Burleigh was still pitching in 33, so we can't rule it out.
