guys, i picked up this absolutely awesome baseball tobacco pipe on ebay. if you saw the piece it was full of dirt. after talking to some pipe people all i did was use a little soap and water and this thing looks brand new .. bowl is missing. but after a little hard work on the computer i finally found the patent info which i cannot believe.. the pipe from what i found out is carved from briar wood. Demuth was a german immigrant who came here in the 1860s penniless. opened his own shop and became a major pipe company. the kicker is the arkansas estate where the pipe came from were german immigrants from the 1870s. Now i can go ahead and have a pipe specialist put the exact bulb back on the pipe. if you saw this in person it is a work of art and worth every penny i paid. enjoy

That's a great piece of baseball memorabilia on its own, irregardless of whether it goes with any type of cards. Congrats on a very nice pickup.

Excuse me if I offended anyone for making a suggestion. I will try to resist saying anything next time in order not to upset anyone's feelings.

Congrats!

Kevin, Congrats on your pipe, it's a beaut!!...I was watching it. I think I recall seeing one in a Leland's auction about 15 years ago. I believe I've seen at least one other vintage baseball pipe that was later than yours that had a baseball for the bowl. But I'd consider yours the best of any I've seen. I only have a vague recall of the one I think I saw in Leland's. I figured for sure the bowl would have been a baseball....but Demuth describes it in the patent as a "Globe". You sure dug up some GREAT reference.

I have the football pipe below. I've never liked that mine has "The Rugby Pipe" name on the side since I'm usually only interested in American sports...Nevertheless I'm convinced it's American because of the quilted over the knee pants.

A similar example (also missing the bowl) sold in Hunts' back in 2004. It went for just about $1K with the "juice". See link below...

I was watching this auction as well Kevin, and you did exceptionally well, in that the scarcity and quality factors are off the charts.

Mark...I've seen a number of the pipes you describe with the baseball bowl, but it's been a long time since this one has turned up. I'm sure I've seen another besides the one in Hunts. I'll dig tomorrow.

Congrats Kevin!!!

carlton, i thought for sure it would have been a baseball... wrong. i wasnt going to do anything till i found something on the pipe., mike anything you can dig up i would appreciate. thanks

CarltonHendricks 12-28-2010 10:00 PM

maybe...

Maybe he just described it as a "globe"...maybe it was a baseball...hard to imagine it not being one....I'd keep looking for a complete example...It would sure be helpful if someone posted a photo of one....I'm pretty sure I saw one in Leland's 15 or so years ago...why don't you give it a shot and email them and see if they might have a photo in their files...if not maybe try to contact Bill Mastro....the squeaky wheel gets the grease

I just picked up one of these pipes on Ebay. Just got it today, & I'm loving this thing. I'm not positive, but it appears to be the original bowl (used). It's nice to get a piece of memorabilia that I can handle without worrying about creasing, damaging, etc.

I'm half tempted to have a smoke.

CarltonHendricks 06-24-2016 01:54 PM

Congrats

Very interesting...how about a bigger photo...would be nice to see the bowl better...Congrats on a great find!!!

perezfan 06-24-2016 03:16 PM

Looks like the bowl is a baseball. I can pretty clearly make out the seams.

Congrats on a great pickup. I recently acquired a different early Baseball Pipe and will try to post a pic shortly. Not many threads on Baseball Pipes, so will try to upload a pic.

Here is mine, FWIW. The ventilated Cap pops off to load the tobacco (or whatever you choose to put in it, haha). Sorry it's sideways :o

Thanks for the nice comments, guys. Mark- that's a great looking pipe. Never seen one like it. Here's a closer look at the bowl-no seams.

Hope you have luck with finding a bowl for it. It looks great!

A third William Demuth baseball pipe has been found. This one was packed away in the storage boxes of a former antique dealer for years.

I am offering it for sale in the B/S/T Memorabilia section.
