Encapsulating autographs

Is this now a requirement among collectors? I would have thought that loose checks with LOA's would be preferable, as they can be matted and framed, but the evidence on a check I'm trying to sell says otherwise.

For me personally, I prefer to have them encapsulated. But by no means do they have to be in order for me to buy one.

I prefer slabbed too. If you frame the check that's more or less serving the same purpose of the slab. But not everyone likes to display their items.

I don't like items slabbed, really do not like the way they display. Checks and cuts I preferred framed. I have bout a few slabbed autographed cards over the years that I have broken out of the slab.

I prefer no slab.

tazdmb 03-09-2018 01:28 PM

Rich always loves showing that off whenever he gets the chance.

I find that the uneducated collector (IE-Never on these boards) gets a piece of mind that comes with having a slabbed check. Plus, there is a value of not having to pay for the slabbing if they ever want to flip in the future.

Runscott 03-09-2018 02:33 PM

Thanks for the responses. I definitely prefer 'no slab' for any item other than some cards; however, I realize that collecting preferences have passed me by, just like technology.

I've never sent anything in to be authenticated but with a nice item like your Cobb check it may be beneficial; especially if it gets a high grade. It's got a lot going for it. The sig looks great with no bank stampings across it and its done in Cobb's Green ink. A guy had a "9" on ebay for 2995.00 and accepted an offer and it sold. It's a beauty but yours doesn't seem far off...unfortunately the slab means everything these days and with a high numerical grade the sky's the limit.

packs 03-09-2018 03:34 PM

Slabbing would make it easier to handle too. Like I said, not everyone is interested in displaying something. If you're going to put a check into some kind of other protective case, why not slab it? Especially if you're going to have it authenticated anyway.

Lordstan 03-09-2018 04:08 PM

double post sorry

IMO, the only reason to authenticate with or without slab is resale value. I will submit for authentication if, and only if, the amount I will get for the item is higher than without. Simple in my mind.

To slab or not, I think is more of a personal preference rather than value decision UNLESS you are going for grading, as some might think the slab will be better to preserve the grade. I am sure there are plenty of examples out there of cards ruined by the slab, but the marketing behind slabs and TPAs in general is so successful that many of their faults, including this, gets overlooked by the masses.

Your Cobb check has a very strong autograph. If you think, you could get a really high grade on the auto itself then you would open up the market to a whole group of collectors who only want "the Best" and might be able to charge a significant premium.

You might be able to find the selling price of this one and see if it worth it to pay for the cert

Here is a PSA 10. It has a lot of watchers, but not sold

So, that would be a NO then. Wow. That can't be right.

Thanks Mark - I don't understand how a non-damaged, non-faded, non-smudged autograph can be anything less than 'mint'. I guess we will find out - I'll post the slabbed results when I get it back.

It was listed as buy it now with the price crossed out, which typically means it was a best offer accepted.

Midway down the page, you see it.

Hmmm. Link doesn't work. Search for Cobb Check PSA and then completed auctions and you'll see it

Sure. Scott.
GLWS slabbing. I will be interested to hear the entire costs and then see the sale price

Just don't forget to add in the grading service. It's the grade that gets you the no.

i would like to slab my cobb and walter johnson checks, but i think all the tpas want at least $150...which i'm not willing to do. slabbed is easier to handle than stacks and stacks of raw stuff in big toploaders, having same problems with 8x10s since i'm getting into signed photos a bit. next check/postcard/picture i buy of a big hof'er will preferably be slabbed, and not raw or with an additional LOA that i need to store.

I have a guy on ebay proclaiming himself a 20-year vet of autograph dealing who has been buying Cobb checks all day long for 450-600. That bit of info, of course, is the precursor to asking me what I will take for it.

I hate ebay. In fact, I hate selling stuff in general. Perhaps I will just declare everything I currently own to be my personal collection :)

Scott to your question I dont really like the authentication part of getting it "slabbed" but what I do like is I dont have to be so careful handling an item. Lord only knows when my drunk ass on a saturday wants to get something out to play with what will or would have happened if it wasn't encapsulated!!!:D:D:D:D

Runscott 03-11-2018 11:54 AM

I have dumped coffee or wine on countless books, but Never a collectible. I always prepare a safe area/surface before taking anything out.

As a collector I don't like plastic other than toploaders for cards and bags for documents. But I understand the appeal.

roarfrom34 03-14-2018 06:10 AM

For checks in particular, I prefer they be slabbed.....Not for authenticity so much, but more for the protection and the ability to stack, display, organize, etc.
