Vandy's starting 9

I was very happy to win this beautiful Ford Frick 1938 Reds team ball that features the signatures of all of the starting 9 that played in both of Johnny Vander Meer's back-to-back consecutive no-hitters. The Reds skipper Bill McKechnie (HOF) is also present on one of the side panels. Willard Hershberger, Lombardi's back up catcher that tragically committed suicide in 1940, is also present on this ball (tough sig!). This ball is a perfect fit for my Vander Meer collection, and I feel that it was actually a bargain. :)

Vander Meer's back-to-back no-hitters starting 9:

Lonny Frey
Wally Berger
Ival Goodman
Frank McCormick
Ernie Lombardi (HOF)
Harry Craft
Lew Riggs
Billy Myers
Johnny Vander Meer

Congrats, Scott.

I had my eyes on this, but decided to save my $$ for tonight. Anyone here win this 1878 Utica cdv?

Another great piece for the Vandy collection Scott -- you're going to need a bigger house!

Yes- Great pickup, Scott! You couldn't hope to find a better condition ball from that time period.

I have balls from the "39 and '40 years (Reds Champs), but am very envious of you for this one.

Terrific Vandy acquisition!

Scott Garner 08-30-2012 01:42 PM

Thanks Greg and Mark!
It's amazing that this ball looks as nice as it does for being nearly 75 years old. Fountain pen ink and a sock drawer, I suppose??

Anyway, I'm glad to own it. I can't wait to get it in hand!

prewarsports 08-30-2012 03:27 PM

No but I found that CDV on ebay in 2002 and bought it for $250! I sold it shortly afterwards and that is the first time I have seen it in exactly 10 years!

GaryPassamonte 08-30-2012 04:40 PM

I bought the Utica CdV.

I'm grateful Legendary Auctions permitted the Diamond Gum pins to be auctioned as a set as well as individually, and delighted the set was not broken up. If it had been, I doubt if it would ever be completed again. Congrats to the winner of this magnificent set.

I agree, Paul. To me, that set was among the highlights of the auction.

I should have guessed! Nice pick-up at a good price.

Agreed, I think that Utica CDV is a $3000++ item all day long!

MVSNYC 08-31-2012 07:19 AM

Thanks guys - appreciate it! I spent more than I planned on, since I had a couple of other recent purchases as well, but I'll make it work - it's only money, right??

MVSNYC 08-31-2012 08:51 AM

Scott- a favorite quote of mine..."I've never seen a Brinks Trunk in a funeral procession."

Nice book. I got mine a bit cheaper but there is no dust cover and it's personalized. Yours looks twice as nice as mine. Great pickup!

Nice pick-up. I remember when Mantle was in Atlanta signing the book - I was too lazy to make the 30 minute drive.

I only bid on one item, and got it for several increments under my max, so very happy - photo used to make the '55 Bowman card. Also have the one used for the '51 Bowman Landry. Was thinking about framing each along with their respective cards, but this one looks so great in its genuine PSA/DNA Type I slab, that I hate to disturb it:

Anyone here win the Negro League broadside w/Ray Dandridge? There are so many fakes out there, just couldn't spend a lot of money on one that I haven't seen in person............

Ken,
This ball had your name written all over it!

mjkm90 09-01-2012 06:53 AM

I have always loved this pin and since they are pretty difficult to find, I didn't mind paying top dollar;)

I picked up this Gehrig Type I, which looks like it's the same photo used for his Saluations Exhibits card.

benchod 09-02-2012 06:32 AM

Outstanding photo of Gehrig!
