Since the pre-war thread has been going so well, let's see your 3 favorite cards on the post-war side. I'll start off with these.............

I don't have photos of my other favorites, but this one is definitely in the Top 3.

#1: '52 Topps Mantle
Always wanted one, finally landed this puppy but yet to have it in hand. Still my favorite postwar card.

#2: '57 Topps Mays
His last card as a New York Giant. I'm still in shock.

#3: '53 Topps Vinegar Bend Mizell (original art and Topps card)
I don't imagine we'll see the likes again of that awesome REA auction with all the '53 Topps art. I'm lucky to have snagged the one.

Beautiful card! I had that one bookmarked and was watching it in the recent Mile High auction. Low grade with great eye appeal. Congrats!

Here are my three postwar faves....

P.S. Three great cards: '71T Munson, '53T Mays & Mantle

CharleyBrown 06-06-2011 06:32 PM

Hmm... tough to choose 3...

#1 1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson (Batting - White Sleeves) - For the simple fact that it is very tough to find any of the 1947 Bond Bread cards... this is probably #1, but will be replaced if I can get my hands on the card of him leaping for the ball in front of the scoreboard...

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...e-robinson.jpg

#2 1949 Leaf Jackie Robinson - I mainly collect Jackie Robinson cards... you can't go wrong with this one.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...e-robinson.jpg

#3 1948 Bowman Stan Musial - I was going to pick my 1955 Sandy Koufax, and probably would interchange the two on another day... but today Musial is #3.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...tan-musial.jpg

On a side note, I also love the '61 Juan Marichal simply due to the Dominican historical element of his birth city being known as La Ciudad de Trujillo when Trujillo was in power... Being married to a Dominican, and having a son that is obviously half-Dominican, it makes for a good conversational piece.

scmavl 06-06-2011 09:18 PM

I love that 33% of people that have posted on this thread chose the '48 Musial. :)

CW 06-06-2011 10:10 PM

Deservedly so. Young Musial's intense stare exudes a confidence you don't normally see in a rookie. Cool cards.

I change my mind all the time. With the exception of the '69 Mantle, the other favorites change frequently :)

I love the signed '69 Mantle, as I used to have one as well. I guess my '66 Mantle would be in my top 3...

It was easy to select these 3 because Pete Runnels & Mickey Vernon are my favorite post-WWII players and because I am turned on by scarcity!

When my now wife and I were dating in the early 80's, she asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I laughed and jokingly said "Mickey Mantle's rookie." At Christmas she was almost crying when she gave me my present, the 62 Brock. "I couldn't afford a Mantle" she said. I married her for finding the Brock (along with her other attributes. The 71 Brock still has my name written on the back, it was my favorite card as an 8 year old. The T206 McGinnity introduced me to the world of tobacco cards at age 13, and I never recovered.

HR Baker - What is the 69 Ted Simmons card?

bcbgcbrcb 06-14-2011 10:29 AM

I think the Simmons card is a modern cut-out from a baseball magazine.

I love these kinds of threads. :) I'll let you guys see if you can tell my major collecting focus with my favorite 3.

The '53 is my favorite card of all time. It was my first vintage card and was what started my fascination with Campy and the Brooklyn Dodgers. This card will be buried with me.

Became a Stanky fan when he managed the White Sox in the late '60's. Hated the guy when I was an eight-year-old because every pack of 52 Bowmans I opened had him staring at me in the staged batting pose and I was trying desparately to find an Eddie Matthews card. That 51 Topps card of course is one that will never be sniffed.

Great cards Chris! I'm in the process of [slowly] reading "It's Good to be Alive" and am finding it [and Campanella] extremely fascinating. Once this book is done, it's going to be very tough *not* to add a Campy card to my collection, which one is going to be a tough decision.

Again, great cards.

Regards,

Richard.

Wow.. great cards everyone!

Koufax was the first card I bought to start my HOF RC collection (upgraded it with this card this year)

Banks and Aaron were two of my favorite players when I was a kid.

Thanks, Richard! I read that book a couple of months ago. I still need to find a nice copy for my collection. I've actually decided to try and collect every Campy related item I can find including the new stuff that comes out every year. Obviously it will never be a complete set but it is pretty fun and it's always easy to find something I don't have yet (affording it is a different story altogether :().

When it comes time for you to add a Campy to your collection let me know. I have a couple extras that I may be willing to trade.

CharleyBrown 06-15-2011 04:39 PM

I'm gonna have to read It's Good to be Alive as well. Hoping to add a Campanella '49 Bowman to my collection this year or next.

Yeah, the '49B is on my short list for sure. But like most things, that changes daily.

Chris -- that sounds like quite the collection. Do you have a gallery online anywhere?

Regards,

Richard.

I've got a LONG way to go and haven't really been working on it lately but hope to get back to it soon. So keep in mind that it's still in its infancy and I hope it gets more impressive over the next couple of years.

Here is the link to my Campy collection. I don't have a lot of the newer base cards scanned but this has all my vintage Campy's and game-used cards (please don't judge me for having game-used cards, I don't like the fact that they cut up those priceless relics either :().
