That's pretty cool, Bob - a 90 year old advertising piece in NM condition, that no one has heard of. That's amazing luck!

Wilson Alvarez no-hitter game ball- Jeff Torborg collection

3 Attachment(s)
I recently picked up a neat item for my no-hitter collection.

Here is a game used ball from CWS pitcher Wilson Alvarez's no-hitter on August 11, 1991 @ Baltimore.

My real interest in this ball stems from the fact that Alvarez was the youngest pitcher to ever hurl a no-hitter in the modern era (post 1903). He pitched the no-hitter at age 21 and 5 months and it occurred in only his 2nd career ML start (and his 1st start with the Chicago White Sox after being traded by the Texas Rangers).

The ball originated directly from Jeff Torborg's personal collection and originally was in the July 15th, 2014 All Star auction. Jeff Torborg was the White Sox skipper in 1991. The ball has been signed by Alvarez on the sweet spot and Torborg added the notation "No-hitter vs. Baltimore" on the side panel.

I don't own the original lineup card that was filled out in Torborg's hand but it's cool to look at. Recent HOF'er Frank Thomas also hit a early career HR in this game to provide some of the offense in support of young Alvarez's gem.

Bob that Speaker sign is incredible.

Here's a couple of items my dad picked up for me antique hunting. The D&M bat is 35" and weighs over 40 0z.

Haven't posted pickups in a while, but here is my newest Type 1 photo.
1932 WS of Lou and Babe. condition isn't great, but I've never seen the image before and thought it was cool.
(Before anyone says anything. I am starting to watermark my photos because I am tired of seeing copies of them being sold on ebay. Maybe not all came from me, but I know some did. If someone wants a clean copy for themselves, shoot me a PM.)

Chicago White Sox Joe Horlen No-Hitter: The Last Out Ball Sept. 10, 1967

5 Attachment(s)
During my youth in the mid '60's I loyally pulled for the White Sox and became a big fan of their outstanding pitchers (Horlen, Peters, John, Buzhardt, Pizarro etc); a favorite player was Joe Horlen.

The '67 A.L. pennant race captured many fans' attention like nothing else had before in baseball. Each new day's boxscores intensified the previous day's excitement. When Horlen tossed a no-hitter vs the Tigers on September 10th during the heated four team pennant chase, I became euphoric. Despite the fact the White Sox faltered the last week of the season and the cinderalla Bosox won the pennant, Horlen's no-hit performance stands out for me as an alltime baseball highlight. *Horlen finished that 1967 season with the A.L.'s lowest ERA...the last time a WSox pitcher won that title...Chris Sale has a chance to end that streak this year.*

The final out of Joe Horlen's no-hitter: Shortstop Ron Hansen grabbed the high bouncing ball off the bat of Detroit Tigers Dick McAuliffe and fired to firstbaseman Cotton Nash for the 3rd out in the ninth inning. Umpire Johnny Stevens made the out call at first base. Cotton Nash handed the ball to Joe moments later.

The markings applied to the ball in 1967 have faded a bit, reading simply:
Sept. 10, 1967 No HItter Chicago 6 Detroit 0 Chicago, Ill. The b&w image below of the postgame celebration shows Joe holding the ball that Cotton Nash (foreground) had handed to him seconds earlier.

After seeing the pickups this month I’m almost embarrassed to post this. I picked this “16 Ruth Souvenir bat at a local antique store today. While conducting an on line search I came across a number of such 125 bats but could not find one with the 40 center brand. I’m fairly sure it is worth the $15.00 I paid for it but was hoping that someone could help me date it.

Runscott 09-08-2014 09:33 PM

Interesting find, Mike - probably can't go wrong at $15.

Today was Christmas in September for me - the postman brought two 1905-15 gloves, one of which I have been working on all evening and will post pics in the morning - it turned out great :). The UPS lady brought my Cano gamer and 1947 Sam Crawford handwritten letter. On the debit side, spent the afternoon working on my 1956 Yankees ball display, chopping up leather and pressing. So far....not so good :( Will post pics of disaster after I recover.

'Before' pics of gloves, etc., below. I'm really happy with the Cano gamer - I paid too much, but it was exactly what I was looking for: trademark taped handle, lots of pine-tar, no cracks, old-school wood look. I suspect it's actually a 2006 or 2007 bat that he took one or two hacks with in 2008 for Mr. Steiner, but that's cool with me. I have a Cano baseball he hit a double with, to display with it. I'm banking on him being the all-time doubles leader in ten years.

Runscott 09-08-2014 09:49 PM

Bob - that's a fabulous pick-up. I grew up in the '60s, listening to the Astros on the radio. Had to use an earplug and pull the sheets way over my head so my brother wouldn't narc me out to my parents. On nights when the Astros weren't playing, I listened to the White Sox games - they naturally became a favorite team of mine, but I still have no idea why I could pick up a Chicago station in East Texas. Weird how I can remember those nights as if it was yesterday. Walt 'no neck' Williams, etc.

Wow! Awesome ball.

Runscott 09-09-2014 10:13 AM

Thanks Mike. I had planned to remove the letter from its frame and re-frame with other Crawford items, but instead will just prop up in the man-cave.

The Cano bat is very dry and has wood separation on the barrel - seems kind of weird for a 6-year old bat, but maybe these days players are too lazy to properly bone their bats (not a euphemism). Makes me believe even more that this one is an older bat that was laying around doing nothing for a few years.

Los Angeles Angels PCL pennant

1 Attachment(s)
Picked up this LA Angels PCL pennant recently. Its the only one I've seen that has this particular LA logo. Most examples I've seen of this pennant have the interlocking LA logo (you know, the one the Dodgers "borrowed"). I'm guessing early to mid-1950s because of its similarity to the other pennants, but the logo does look similar to the 1942 Angels logo.

Cy Young Day ticket stub and clippings August 13, 1908

7 Attachment(s)
This pickup sincerely ranks up there with one of my favorites of all-time.
What more can be said of Cy Young: 511 career wins, 3 no-hitters including hurling the first "perfect game" from the current mound distance of 60' 6"?
He pitched a perfect game so early in baseball history (1904) that they didn't even have a name for it yet...
Heck, they named the freaking pitching award after the guy!!

Here is an unbelievably scarce ticket stub and newspaper clippings to Cy Young Day on August 13, 1908.
In 40+ years of collecting baseball tickets I do not ever recall ever seeing, or even hearing of another ticket existing to this historic game.
The second scan shows the back of the fan's scrapbook page that features clippings of Cy Young some 20 years later in 1927.

Note: It's hard to see, but printed in red, running lengthwise on the ticket it appears to say "Cy Young Day" in the facsimile handwriting of 'Ol Cy himself.
Neat!

Here is a brief write up of the Cy Young Day game:

"On August 13, 1908 the Boston Americans (Red Sox) organized "Cy Young Day."
The American League offered its support for the unprecedented celebration by ensuring that no games were scheduled on August 13th so that a select group of "All-Star" players, including "Wee" Willie Keeler, Hal Chase, and Jack Chesbro, could travel to Boston and take part in an exhibition game versus the Red Sox. It is reported that over 20,000 fans filled the stands to offer their adulation to the legendary hurler and another 10,000 were turned away at the gate. Naturally, Young was the starter for Boston, and he pleased the capacity crowd by pitching two innings in the contest. During the game, play was interrupted several times in order to make special presentations to Young, who was so moved by the ceremony that he became too choked up to speak. The ten-page program (five inches in diameter) features a portrait photo of Young on the cover set against a larger photo of countless cheering fans in the grandstand."
The most exceptional gesture of all was by given Boston American owner John Taylor: he gave the entire gate of $7,500 to Cy, which was more than Cy's annual contract for the year!

BTW, I don't own this scorebook for the Cy Young Day game, but a few of these have surfaced in the hobby through the years.
I am including photos of the scorebook as well as a photo of a trophy Cy received during the ceremony for those that are interested.

Gary, Congrats...quite a ball....year appears to be 1865...almost looks like 1855...but the June eliminates that since the Union's started July 17th 1855...

How'd you land that?...can you give the who what where?...as balls like that don't grow on trees...looks like an auction piece...

So is it a candidate for restoration or is that out of the question?...Have you seen other Union of Morrisania trophy balls?...nice catch!

CarltonHendricks 09-11-2014 01:02 PM

Congrats!!

Scott, Wow what a great P/U congrats!!...the ticket plus the paraphernalia!...sounds like the high point of his career...20,000 in attendance 10,000 turned away...I can understand it ranking with your all time favorite pick ups...Now you're gonna have to get the score card to go with...and the cigar box...and the cigar tin.

Thanks for the likes.
Carlton-I got the ball in the recent Legendary auction. The condition of the ball is what it is and will stay that way. Restoration would be a no-no for a trophy ball. There apparently was a small group of these Union of Morrisania balls found some years back. They remain quite rare, as are all trophy baseballs. I'm happy to have this one.
