Yet Another '52 Topps Mantle

I'm really skeptical about anything that comes up for sale that falls in the category of "highly sought after" in our hobby and seeing shenanigans with slabbed cards as of late, I'm sure has most of us on edge when it comes to people we don't know. Just wondered how many of you guys would give this one a second look, or if this one has been seen on the market before.

With people taking cards out of slabs and reusing labels - wouldn't an added security benefit be for PSA to add a picture of the card on their website. Wouldn't that go a long way in combating this type of criminal activity?

Sorry I don't have an opinion on the card as I am not an expert but it would help if the 3 major grading companies kept pictures of all the cards. It would make it that much more difficult to reuse holders.

I have to agree with that. It would be an easy thing now that digital pictures are the norm. Thanks for the reply

They do it for coins, but think just how many millions of cards they grade and how long it already takes. You think they could scan every card and not increase pricing and timelines? They're nice enough to let us scan our own cards and upload them. And they track previous sales on their Auction Prices realized tool, or you can check VCP/Worthpoint for previous sales to photomatch on.
If I was interested in this card, I'd message the seller with the offer to pay for them to send it to PSA for a reholder to the new flip/holder. If PSA completes the reholder, pay them in full for $5,000.
If they balk at sending it back to PSA, the holder has been compromised and the card's not real.

I agree the cost would go up but timelines shouldn’t be impacted. Graders need to be trained versus anyone can essentially scan in cards. It’s nice you can scan in your own cards but I’m guessing scammers wouldn’t do that.

But good points and probably answers my questions.

My guess is someone inserted a photo copy into an old slab. The card itself looks very familiar to me--I spent way too much time looking at poor examples before buy mine. But, something towards the top looks like a rough cut in the paper from when it was trimmed from whatever it was printed on. That, coupled with the price, would be enough to keep me away.

I’m in Louisville now. Already emailed the guy - said he was here on vacation. I guess he carries his 52 mantle around. Lol

Card is listed on ebay right now, seller even mentions this guy and the craiglist B S in the description.

Ahh! That's where I'd seen it.

Funny thing is...

The pic on craigslist was taken from a different time period. Notice the solid brown background?

The one eBay has a white piece of paper behind it.

The Craiglist seller must have stolen the picture from an older listing?
