Posted By: <b>barrysloate</b><p>Ted- all the reports are saying he was 89, and since his birthday is in September, I believe that would make it 1917.<br /><br />After reading one of his obituaries, and seeing one of his daughters was Penny, I recall that I met her once at a party many years ago, and I think it was in Waterville, Maine. I had completely forgotten about it until yesterday.

Posted By: <b>barrysloate</b><p>I just read in the paper that Yankee Stadium will erect a plaque reading: "Phil Rizzuto: 1917-2007."<br /><br />Can't argue with that.<br /><br />To add; Rizzuto has been known for years as the oldest living HOFer (since Al Lopez died). But Bobby Doerr was born in April, 1918, so if Phil was born in Sept 1918, he never would have held that title.

And, I have two BB encyclopedias that say the same <br />date.<br />I saw your link to the New York Post article....I just don't trust the media to get anything correct,<br />nowadays.<br />Until we see a Birth Certificate saying otherwise, September 25, 1918 is correct with me.<br /><br />TED Z<br />

If you look at the overall picture, the Yankees, the HOF, a newspaper specifically mentioning Rizzuto often lied about his age and the BB Almanac all saying 1918 is NOT his birthdate - I think the case is certainly as persuasive as your baseball cards and two editions of the encyclopedia. <br /><br />Basically, if anything has come to light over this, it's that no one knows the true date! You are 100% correct, a birth certificate is needed,<br /><br />For me personally, if I had to pick one source as being the most accurate or what I would believe, I would certainly pick the HOF itself, which states Rizzuto was born in 1917. <br /><br />We can differ on opinions or what we think is more authoritative, but 1917 wins out in my book.

Posted By: <b>barrysloate</b><p>According to an article by Murray Chass in this morning's New York Times, in the 1970's Rizzuto hurt himself while bunting during spring training and had to be taken to the hospital. Chass was there and offered to drive. When they arrived Rizzuto was asked some basic questions, among them his date of birth.<br /><br />"September 25, 1916", he replied, then turned to Chass and said "Don't you tell anybody."<br /><br />So I think the mystery is solved. Phil lied about his age, thus all the "1918" dates on the back of his baseball cards, as well as the "1917" the Yankees are using, are incorrect.
