OT non sports the Boss

Not sports but have not been this excited to add a autograph in awhile and wanted to share if there are any music fans on the board. The Boss Bruce Springsteen was in town on Halloween and was able to get him to sign my poster on the way in and my ticket stub on the way out. One of my favorite musicians and my first time seeing him live. He played a 3 hour set and spent time with the fans before and after the show.

Nice!

I got the Boss to sign my ticket stub way back in 1976:

Awesome! Nice piece to have signed.

I've been to about 20 shows, most recently in April. I tried to get his autograph many times, but never came close. Then, in 2009, I was working in the stadium during the Super Bowl week. I got to see his rehearsal, and as I was leaving I heard a familiar voice. I looked over my shoulder and there he was walking behind me. I stopped dead, probably with my mouth open.
He came up and said "How you doin'?"
I stammered something about how great the show (rehearsal) was, I was a huge fan, and how he changed my life. :o
He said "That's nice. That's nice. I'm a big fan of yours, too." and laughed. Then he slapped my back, shook my hand and said "Take care".

I never even thought to ask for an autograph.

Everything you need to know about our Presidential candidates:

Obama has Bruce singing for him at campaign rallies.

Romney has Kid Rock.

Wow David that is a old signature ! I was negative four years old when that bad boy was signed. :D Deertick thats awesome 20 times must have been some great memories at all those shows. Cool story about running in to him at the super bowl. The thing that stood out the most was how down to earth and friendly he was to those waiting outside to catch a glimpse on a cold raining westerny ny night. I have met many sports and celebrities before and The Boss was a class act all the way.

I would have thought you'd be more politically sophisticated. :D As you know, either side can come up with a list of unflattering supporters and juxtapose them with more dignified supporters for their side.

Shall I begin with Rev. Wright, Ashton Kutcher, Rosie o Donnell or Vladimir Putin? :D

RichardSimon 11-06-2012 03:25 PM

Very, very cool getting the Boss twice.
I have seen him many times and nobody puts on a show like he does.
I saw him in a rain-lightning delay on this tour, where we had to wait for two hours for the show to start. He still did a 3 1/2 hour show and we were at the stadium until 2 am.
It was his birthday night and his mom came out with a cake. He cut up the cake and gave some slices to the fans in the front.
I also saw him at the Rock n Roll HOF Anniversary concert at MSG and that was one amazing night, with a star list that was amazing.

David Atkatz 11-06-2012 03:26 PM

I'm not talking about "supporters," Steve. Ashton Kutcher might support Obama, but Barack's not inviting him to speak at his rallies.

More great stories. Thanks for sharing Richard. This was the scheduled for the day before Halloween but was pushed back because of the Hurricanes. On youtube there are some videos of him talking about Sandy in Rochester and he also sang the Monster Mash during request time. I just recently decided to go for more in person Rock autographs to go with my sports collection. That Ramones poster is a really nice piece from a great band. Got 1/3 members of ZZ Top the other day to.

Bruce is amazing. I used to have his signature on a sleeve for Open All night, but bought it from secondary market. He's the BEST live performer still around. AMAZING.

you guys should look on YouTube for the clip of Growin up from Louisville the other night. Not only did he grant a sign request for "Growin up" on a guys 20th Birthday, he invited him onstage to sing the last verse w him. Its GREAT. Guy goes nuts. WHAT A THRILL for him.

RichardSimon 11-06-2012 05:53 PM

In 2004 Bruce was campaigning with John Kerry.
They were at the Univ of Wisconsin and guys were hanging out the dorm windows as Bruce did some songs. A couple of guys yelll down and invite Bruce to their room to share some pizza.
Concert ends,,, 5 minutes later there is a knock on their door. They open the door and there is Bruce.
How cool that must have been.

Johnny Ramone collected baseball autographs for a long time.
He used to buy from me at the National Pastime shows in Manhattan.

As a hardcore punk aficionado, I stumbled upon a few years ago a founding guitarist for the long since defunct and seminal band Black Flag selling 1970s proof records, metal pressing plates and cover art from the band on eBay. Considering those types of bands were about 2,000 miles outside the mainstream and were the definition of DIY, that type of stuff is almost unheard of on the market. I was surprised the stuff existed.

Sorry, he didn't autograph anything, making it off topic.

Only counts if you have autos, or Bon Scott's codpiece.... Now that's a good story :)

Love the autographs of Bruce and The Ramones! I'll go a little old school with my music autographs. I was in band during my high school years. For fundraisers, we held a series of jazz concerts over the span of three years. We had to set up the stage and for the Count Basie concert. A group of us had to lift a baby grand piano down a flight of stairs into our gym. Count Basie was a classy man and talked to us about some of his experiences. He signed autographs for everyone who set up the stage and I had him sign my poster after a frantic search around my school for anything for him to sign!

One more from my high school jazz concert series. Buddy Rich put on a great show but was very standoffish to put it politely and didn't sign many autographs. But for some unexplained reason, he liked me. lol

Who says these type of things? There is a reason why we are 20 trillion in debt and has nothing to do with a concert or a performer. I'm sure if you are some limousine liberal you can live with paying more taxes and getting less, but people who work harder for less while others do less and get welfare don't appreciate it. Why don't you stay on topic and leave your political rants to yourself.
BTW: I love Springsteen and have seen him many times even though I don't appreciate his political stance

I hope you remember this when "you" get to pay you "fair" share. Liberals are always ok until it affects their bottom line. When it affects them, then we need to put a stop to this nonsense.

I wholeheartedly disagree with this statement, by sheer definition here is the definition of the adjective liberal

Open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values

now here it is for conservative

Holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in politics or religion.

I would discern from the definitions that liberals are more open to "Change" than conservatives.

There's this little piece of paper that you may remember reading about in 10th grade government class, it's called the Constitution which is what the US was founded on. "Open to change" is exactly what I am referring to because there must be a better way to govern than what made us the greatest nation in the
World for the last 300 plus years. Of course "HE" must be smarter than everyone that came before him. Wait, or maybe socialism just doesn't work after all.

These things are cyclical. Sooner or later the balloon will burst with the cult of personality messiah and it won't seem so fashionable to look to the government as the solution to every problem. It doesn't seem like it now, but self-determination doesn't go out of style. :)

It ain't.
It has nothing to do with a "cult of personality," and everything to do with voter demographics. Old white men are dying, and blacks, Hispanics, Asians, LGBT, and more liberal youth are taking their place.

In not-so-many years, the Hispanic vote will render Texas a blue state.

Dig it!

I was going to post something very similar to this.

My super-old neighbor dropped by today while I was doing yard work and told me many things regarding how disappointed he was in the election results. I was polite because he's super old, but one of his parting notes made me raise my eyebrows. He mentioned how men have given up their leadership role when it comes to women. I guess that in the "old days" a woman would vote how her husband voted (I don't actually know if this was a "spoken" thing, or if she just knew to do so).

This certainly isn't so anymore, and there's no doubt that we're better off for it. My wife is quite capable in a way that I gather my neighbor isn't familiar with. The world is changing. Women do stuff. She deserves to have her voice heard independent of mine. I truly believe this. Her interests are naturally informed by a different set of issues than mine...we still tend to agree on most stuff anyhow.

The same is true for all minorities who's voices were marginalized for years and years. Black, female, homosexual, Latino, atheist, whatever...these groups comprise a huge majority when their interests intersect. The world is bigger and smaller at the same time and we have an awesome opportunity to reject fear and exclusion and embrace their opposites.

Cult of personality doesn't even begin to explain why Obama and his progressive ideas are more popular than any mainstream GOP leader's stone-aged ideas. I certainly reject the idea that the election of Obama was unconstitutional. Deal with reality now...it IS different and frankly, I believe it IS better.

My point is, today's disgruntled, "disenfranchised" 20- or 30-something -- latino, black, gay... whatever -- is tomorrow's business person who has to meet a payroll and pay taxes. Yes, indeed, demographics change. In my view, Latinos in particular may shift away from the Dems.

If the messiah could re-brand the old tax and spend Democrats into something more fashionable, then it's entirely possible the GOP could undergo a similar transformation with the right talent.

And if you don't think that Obama's success is not largely due to the celebrity nature of the culture and pure marketing, then maybe you are one of the enthralled. :p Do you really think the college age kids that vote for him in droves are deep political thinkers with a real grasp of the issues? Or maybe, just maybe, they are voting for him because it's the fashionable thing to do among that crowd?

:)

mr2686 11-08-2012 05:28 PM

I agree Steve. The College students are no more deep thinkers when it comes to politics than their professors that have never had a real job in the private sector.

cubsfan-budman 11-08-2012 05:32 PM

I think that young folks vote for Liberals in general, that's not new.

Social Conservatism isn't all that attractive when you're 18-24.

Duluth Eskimo 11-08-2012 06:02 PM

The biggest problem in society nowadays is that everyone thinks they deserve to be the boss and no one thinks that they have to work hard. I would bet our parents worked harder in one day than most of us work in a week. You have kids that work for fortune 500 companies that can't start their day at work without a Starbucks break. The days of paying your way through college then working hard to repay your debt is a thing of the past. People today think they deserve everything and don't have to work for anything. This is supposed to be ok and because we are the land of opportunity, we must be obligated to pay for it. Problem is, HE is running out of people to pay for it. Am I bitter, no. Am I disappointed that my children will have to pay off debt because people are too lazy to take care of themselve, yes. Please don't give me the needy story either as my family has been in that spot before. This is going way off topic so this is where I bow out. Good talk Rusty, good talk.

Are you crazy, Steve? The "tax and spend Democrats" provided a surplus for the "don't tax but spend trillions more on unfunded wars" Republicans to piss away, create the largest debt ever, and then crash the economy to boot.

But, hey, it's much easier to blame it all on Obama's charisma.

Whatever works for you.

David Atkatz 11-08-2012 06:21 PM

Oh, and I guess teaching isn't a real job, but commodity trading, arbitrage, and private equity (in which you buy companies, bleed them dry, and then throw away the dried husk (basically the workers) is.

David Atkatz 11-08-2012 06:25 PM

The debt, Jason, came from unfunded wars. You wanna have a war? Fine. But wars are expensive. So you raise taxes to pay for them. (Check your history. See how we paid for WWI, WWII, the Korean War, etc.)

You don't start two wars, and lower taxes.

It causes huge deficits.

Hi All,

I have been watching and reading most of the threads for quite a while. Never felt I really had anything to contribute. I have no expertise on many of the signatures that are posted. My knowledge is Olympic signatures and Olympic photography. I buy and sell Olympic signatures and collect photos of American Olympians. I have over 5,000 images of Olympians, being press photos, personal photos, glass plate negatives, negatives and slides. You will also see me mentioned in the Hauls of Shame posting on the Recovery of the Babe Ruth will, both in the article and a long comment at the bottom. That being said I thought I would share a few music signatures now that this off topic topic as gotten back on track.

I am sorry, but I do not know how to put the writing between each image so I am listing the names and then the images.

David Bowie
James Burton - guitar on 'Suzie Q', Elvis Presley's guitar player in the 1970's
Paul Butterfield - legendary leader of self names blues band
The Clash - Joe Strummer and Mick Jones
Miles Davis

I will post some more later this evening.
Cheers,
Michael

Michael Those are great ! Are those all in some type of history of rock n roll book ? Did you purchase the book that way or obtain the signatures in person.

As for me met Bill Cosby the other day and added these to my non sport collection.

Gotta love those early Cosby albums! They're definitely classics! :)

Is this any different from having someone who has no connection to the game sign a baseball? I've never much understood that. Why not have them sign an item relevant to their own field or, if nothing appropriate or available, then a photo?

My Rock Book

Hi Bruce,

I have this book called "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock" published in 1976 and authored by two writers from NME - New Musical Express, the British rock newspaper. Every signature has been obtained in person by me with only two signatures not signed directly in front of me. One person signed on their tour bus, which is their standard way. One person was obtained very early on by a friend that worked for his crew. I never say which two as it is not important as they are both genuine. I started getting it signed in 1979 when I was a poor college student. I brought it to an in store signing for Iggy Pop. His guitar player was was standing there and he was a member of legendary punk band The Damned - Brian James. He was number one. Iggy was number two. There are currently about 450 signatures in the book. There are plenty more I can add. The beauty of the book is not the big names, but all of the lesser known bands that have signed it. Some people I have gotten other items signed over the book but for the last 10 years or so the book has been primary over all other items. I have a database of when and where every person signed it. As I was not thinking about it early on I am missing some dates, but still knew most of the places once I started keeping a log. Would I sell it? Yes, for the right price. It is just an item. The memories are more than the book. 'Things exist whether we own them or not" - Chairman Mao.

The scans for many of them are too large to show (Ramones, Yes, Ten Years After, Genesis, Four Tops, The Jam, Rod Stewart). But here are a few more items.
Carly Simon
Robin Trower
Cher
Gene Clarke - The Byrds deceased
Link Wray - deceased. The day I got it was the only concert he did in the U.S. that year and his last U.S. appearance.
Frank Zappa

Hello Mark,

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I think it is silly to get figure skaters, authors, politicians and other non-baseball personages on baseballs, bats, hockey pucks, golf balls and any other item not related to their field. I have yet to see someone refuse to sign a baseball, but I am sure there are some who do. The philosophy is that it is different, but so many lemmings are doing it that it has become pedestrian. It is also not 'unique'. An overused and misunderstood word. Unique means there is only one of that item ever and at all. Though I have never really signed my name for anyone if I was put in that position I would refuse such items. Just my two cents.

Cheers,
Michael

Michael That is great that all the graphs were obtained in person by you. There must be some fantastic stories with that item. Thanks again for showing it to us.

For a while in the early 1990s I was getting baseballs signed by non-sports people. To me it was a novelty, and they made interesting display pieces. Some of the names I got on baseballs were George Plimpton, Phil Donahue, Maury Povich, Jim Shooter (former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics), Curtis and Lisa Sliwa... and Rush Limbaugh, who does have some kind of a baseball connection in that he worked in the Kansas City Royals' front office for a while.

Adam,

In the interim you can check out some of my concert photography at www.fanseyeview.net. Click on the portfolios.

Here are a couple of concert photos from 33 years of shooting. I don't keep many on my computer and the few that are are too large.

Joe Strummer - 1981 Clash on Broadway. They did 14 days at Bond's in Times Square. I shot the first two nights.

Kenny Aaronson - Was a member of Stories when "Brother Louie" went to #1. Played with Rick Derringer on 5 albums. Has played/recorded with Bob Dylan, Brian Setzer, Joan Jett and many others. This is him with John Eddie at a small club in Vienna, VA

Tim Bogert - member of Cactus, Vanilla Fudge and Beck, Bogert, Appice. This is him playing at a club in Springfield, VA, where I currently live. This was a Cactus/Vanilla Fudge show so he was with the opener and headliner. Rarely tours due to health problems.

Doors !

Another great day in Rock N Roll collecting. Legendary Drummer John Densmore of The Doors was in town promoting his new book (The Doors Unhinged). Would recommend checking out the tour if he is in your area. John was very personable and showed up early and stayed late. Signed item for everyone. Ended up with 4 drumsticks 2 DrumHeads 3 Record flats and of course his awesome book.
