Nominate your favourite vintage soccer card!

Yes, I know that this is possibly subjective and a matter of taste - but it would be fun to hear what you guys think. It would be nice to be inspired for additions to my "want list", too :)

Which card is your favourite soccer card, by all means: rarity / importance / aesthetically pleasing etc. You don't need to own it. Maybe is a card you wish you had :) Which card is for you the "1986 Fleer Michael Jordan" of soccer?

Exhibitman 08-14-2014 11:09 PM

I never tire of this one: 1968 Crack Pele from Argentina:

Spartan833 08-14-2014 11:13 PM

The card that I most want to own is Giuseppe Meazza RC and #2 is Ferenc Puskas RC

My favorite card that I own is:

One of the first two soccer cards ever made

I LOVE this Crack 68 Pele, you don't see these so often. I collect Pele mainly from 50s until 70s and this is an addition I would love to my collection :)

Spartan833: Which card is considered as Meazzas rookie? I guess the 1930s card(s)? I have the chance to get my hands on some of these, but I have no idea which publisher these come from. Do you know anything more? Here they are:

And what a nice Bassett card. Whole 118 years old, geez.

Keep them coming!

Spartan833 08-15-2014 12:42 PM

Great cards, but I don't consider any of those his RC. Looks like this, but Meazza

SECollector 08-15-2014 01:11 PM

Yes, I have seen that one and it is actually in my want-list. Very hard to find, though...! Post it here for sure when / if you pick it up. Cheers!

eagles33 08-15-2014 01:26 PM

Mine are these 2. Neither are in very good condition but they are pretty difficult to find at all.. So I'll take them in this condition.

Don't get me started. :)

I mean ... what kid wouldn't want a rookie card of "Death" or a picture of Jack Cock in Action.

Also couldn't resist adding some Matt Busby cards from the 1930's and a cool oval Stanley Matthews card.

Really cool cards. Eagles33, if you ever decide to sell / trade that Titulares #86, here you have your man! Keep me in mind :)

SECollector 08-16-2014 01:42 AM

And here comes my favourite: in my opinion one of the most important soccer cards ever. My personal favourite from the 1958 Pele rookie cards, although I would love to get my hands on at least one from 1958 from Brazil and the 1958 V.A.V. card. This is the most recent addition to my collection - and I really love it, its really hard to find it in better condition. I have one more - as I wrote in another thread - for trade / sale.

1958 Alifabolaget #635 Pele .
Issued in Sweden where the World Cup was held. Presents a 17 years old Pele, at the time widely unknown. The youngest player of the tournament.

And as a bonus - one from my collection that I find totally subjectively aesthetically attractive, and rather rare too:

1964 Simon Chocolates Pele (Spain)

The 1964 George Best Rookie made by Barratt is a classic. A tough, but not impossible card.

Love the Cruyff!

While not vintage, I have a fairly tough Swedish maradona card coming in the mail soon. I'll post when it arrives.

Soccer player or rock star? Apparently the manufacturer thought the latter.

SECollector 03-01-2017 10:59 PM

Really cool cards.

That Svijet set is much tougher than most people would think. I had a HARD time finding a nice Pele from that set.

Hey Peter... it is the only one that I know of... I have "heard" of others, but they have been "punched" these are kindof akin to the Topps Stand Ups!

Al, thanks for the compliment. It's one of the big Billy Meredith cards that I have been searching years for. I was over the moon to inquire about someone's Taddy Prominent, only to find out that he had a raw Billy Meredith Taddy Prominent to sell. I've seen one authentic Taddy Steve Bloomer, but am still looking for a gradeable one.

Iron Horse 03-12-2017 09:29 PM

Hi Al,
Do you have a 1967-68 Palirex Cruyff that you can share the pic of?

This question is a bit confusing. The 86' Fleer Jordan is the best modern basketball card. As for vintage, some collectors call the 48' Bowman George Mikan the "Mona Lisa of basketball cards," while others prefer the 61' Fleer Wilt Chamberlain.

Now the best modern soccer card, in my opinion, is the 04' Panini Mega Cracks Messi. As for vintage, I am going to choose two cards: the Quigol Pele and the Alifabolaget Pele. Both of these cards look stunning, are tough to find (especially in high grade), and collectors are willing to spend big bucks to get their hands on them.

I would agree that one of the Pele rookie cards would have to be my favorite vintage soccer card. I love both of the ones you show.

My other favorite Pele rookie is the Balas Idolos.

Sadly, I don't own any of these yet. When I started into soccer cards these were just outside of my price range and they keep going up, so even though I have had times where my spending money went up, these have stayed just outside of my budget :(

samosa4u 05-15-2017 10:08 AM

There is one problem with the Pele Balas card: it is so rare that most collectors have never even heard of it!

Pele's Quigol and Alifabolaget cards have become more mainstream over the years, and that is why there is more interest in these two.

Jose Manuel Moreno

From Wikipedia... one of a handful of Players that were super important that few know about.... and these are some of my new favorite cards!

José Manuel Moreno Fernández (3 August 1916 — 26 August 1978), nicknamed "El Charro", was an Argentine footballer who played as an inside forward for several clubs in Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia; for many who saw him play, he is the greatest player of all time, even better than Pelé and Alfredo Di Stéfano,[1] and was the first footballer ever to have won first division league titles in four countries (later players to emulate the feat include Jiri Jarosik and Rivaldo).

Moreno was part of the River Plate team known as La Máquina ("The Machine") which dominated Argentine football in the 1940s, and was also a member of the Argentine national team that won three South American Championships during the same decade.

He was regarded by many as a complete player.[2][3] In 1999, he was ranked among the 25 best players in the world in the 20th century and among the five best in South America, through a poll by the IFFHS.[4] He was known as a player of great technique, great vision, and lethal in the penalty area.[3] Despite his reputation for drinking, smoking and not going to training, Moreno was also known for his formidable heading ability and fine physical qualities.[3]

Very cool cards Al! And some great info on the player too.

Are the backs blank? If not, I would love to see pix of the backs. A picture of the front only is like seeain't half the card in my opinion.

on the Figuritas Cola and Bicicleta... His Leyes rookie does have a back.... I may be able to scan that back and post it....

That is a fun and interesting back. It's strange that they use English terminology for Corner Kick and off sides.
