57 Topps

Can anybody tell me why 57 Topps lacks true color and has weird tints?

drcy 09-21-2018 01:20 AM

As my dad would respond, because it lacks true color and has strange tints.

I'm sure it had something to do with it being Topps' first foray into using actual photographs on their cards.

What he said.

And there are at least two versions of each card, one darker/murkier than the other. There have been some threads highlighting the differences. Still one of my favorite sets.

I hadn't realized it was every card. In trying to upgrade my O/C Kaline though, I've seen there are brownish and greenish ones.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2866ad7e2e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...19dfb48998.jpg

If you check out the color in the last two series, it's much brighter. Both series have a number of cards that have a golden tint to them, which makes the sky gray. Topps did the same thing in one of its series in 1969. Check out the different between two lower series cards, and two from the later series.

There are so many beauties in this set--Ted Williams and Gil Hodges are two faves--but here is one that Topps really whiffed on. It's almost like Podres is a ghost.

The cure for looking at an ugly, washed out 57 Topps card is immediately picking up a 53 Bowman Color and basking at its beauty.

The beautiful 53 set that ruined Bowman with high costs and disappointing sales...but is revered today.

I've actually always liked this card because it's one of the few I can think of that shows the scoreboard at Ebbets Field. Is there another version which has more color pop to Johnny himself?

Agreed. Those cards are insanely nice. I wish I had more of them.
