I picked up the 1918 Boston Red Sox team photo.

Nice pick up Brad....

Thanks Leon. I figure if I can't afford a Ruth card with the Red Sox I'll go with a Ruth photo from that time. lol

Anybody else having problems using the "Sold" & "Completed" items tab for particular sellers?

Was curious about the ending prices for the Yee auctions, but the listings seem to just disappear when they end unless they are saved on a watch list somewhere.

Another Ebay "enhancement"?

It takes 24 hours after the ending time for them to show up.

Any idea how long they've been doing that for? Can't be long ago I was regularly checking ended listings as soon as they were over.

Secondly, why to begin with?

Several months at least. I figure it has something to do with the whole campaign to provide buyers with completely anonymous (to third party observation) buying.

FWIW, you can still see the results immediately after if you were "watching" the item, had bid on it (can see it in your own bid history), or if you know the specific item number to key into the search window. As Brock said though, the results are hidden from completed listings searches and links for 24 hours.

I usually don't have a problem waiting for the items to reappear (or was already watching it anyway), but I agree that with certain "event" auctions like Henry's, it's frustrating to not be able to immediately see the results.

question on my winning photo

1 Attachment(s)
I won a photo of Jackie Robinson winning the 1950 MVP award. My question is
(I did message the seller), why on the back of the photo is the date June 29 1995 stamped on it. I have not got an answer back yet so I thought I would ask here. I also found two other auctions by another seller with the same photo that was a copy. Any answers to my dilemma?

drcy 09-16-2014 11:37 AM

There isn't a problem with your Robinson photo. News photos were often re-used, re-cataloged and re-filed over the years and can have multiple date stamps from those events. It's not rare for a news photo to have multiple date stamps. The earliest date stamp on yours dates the photo to 1950.

The original newspaper clipping pasted on back is also a good sign of old age, as that was common newspaper procedure with vintage photos. They did that (along with with stamping the date) to catalog and document the the caption for the photo before putting it in their files.

Date on photo

Might have been published again on that date. Can't read what is
written in front of it, but just a guess.

There's a reasonable chance they went to their files and used the same photo to make another newspaper picture in 1995. Newspapers often went to their archives to get old images for anniversary of major event articles or famous person obituaries. When Babe Ruth died, the newspapers included images of him back in Yankees playing days. Maybe this newspaper had an article or book review about Robinson and needed a nice image of him in his hey day. That's exactly why they kept archives of their old photos and were careful to date and document the captions on back. I've seen original newspaper archives and the photos were carefully grouped in large manilla envelopes labelled by subject ('Greta Garbo,' '1950 World Series,' 'Vietnam War Battles,' 'Ty Cobb'), obviously so they could go back and retrieve images when needed. You could go into the archives, pick up an envelope labelled 'Babe Ruth' and it would be filed with original Babe Ruth photos.

It's also possible they were just re-cataloging, re-filing their archives, or sold their photos to an other organization, and the filing date was added at that time.

Below are the original photos that came out of a newspaper's 'Jack Dempsy' envelope.

Below is what came out of a 'Rogers Hornsby' envelope:

'Joan Crawford':

When I authenticated and cataloged the photos for an auction, the auction house sent me boxes and boxes of original newspaper envelopes just as the newspaper had kept them filed. I would go through a envelope, labelled say 'Bela Lugosi' or 'Walter Johnson' on the outside, pick out several choice singles, then put the rest into one or two large groups. The above are some of the group lots. The lowest minimum bid the auction house ever used was $100, so the singles were particularly special, but the 'bulk lots' still contained loads of great singles. A group lot contained many photos worthy of being sold as singles, even in that auction, but an auction can have only so many Jean Harlow lots.

Just a few of the singles:

The Lugosi photo is particularly interesting in that it is a publicity photo for his Broadway stage version of Dracula, before he appeared in the movie and became a star. He was discovered by Hollywood when movie studio people saw him in the play.

The obviously very early Beatles photo sold for over $2,000.

I won the photo used to make Frank Frisch's 1928 Exhibit card. I always liked that pose of him laying in the dirt - now I need to get a copy of the card...

You don't want to see the Winston Churchill' envelope. :(

It says "RAN JUN 29 1995" which ties right in with what David was saying. If the 1995 date were the only date on the back, then you might have reason to question. Some papers stamped or wrote the date the photo ran, some simply stamped the date it was returned to the files (usually a day or two after it actually ran). As David said, you go with the earliest date, and assume that the later dates are when it was re-used. If you want to go the extra mile, you can even go look up the old newspapers that the photo ran in to see how it actually appeared in print. Many are available in pdf format online, though most require a subscription or pay-per-page for the full-page scans. I think it would be a pretty neat go-with kind of item to have the original paper featuring your photo.

Incidentally, the practice of newspapers and other publications keeping photos like this in their morgue/archives for decades for possible future use is a big part of why they are still around to be enjoyed by collectors today. Newspapers were the original "hoarders" of old photographs :)

Vandy's 2nd no-hitter- First night game at Ebbets Field

Not a Type I, but I did pick up a nice quality restrike of the first night game at Ebbets Field which was also Johnny Vander Meer's 2nd consecutive no-hitter.

I knew of this photos existence and have been looking for a nicer quality image of this shot. This photo originated from the Los Angeles Dodgers photo archive.
