Would you ever pay a lot of money (whatever that might be) for a very rare card of a major star that is in really terrible condition?

I know there a thousand if, ands and buts for this kind of open ended question, but I would be curious as to what people’s gut reaction is. (Other that what a stupid question.).

I’ve been eyeing one for a long time and I just can’t pull the trigger. The card looks like it was dragged a few miles under someone’s shoe.

If it is older than a century, yes.

Absolutely. Unless the "damage" makes me ill or uncomfortable to look at. I passed on a card I wanted because it looked like someone vomited on it. Missing pieces, creases, paperless are OK until a better one comes along.

I had a friend who had a 4 on 1 Ruth...it was in lower grade and every time I got ready to pull the trigger, he would raise the price a little. Never got it, don't really regret it. I am a fairly low grade collector, but really there are things I find that just bother me to no end. At one time I had a partner who had a high tolerance for off center cards but insisted on sharp corners. I was just the opposite...I had a tolerance for natural wear but not poor centering. I did overpay for a low grade T206 O'Hara St. L / Polar Bear. Wish I have been a little more patient.

Thanks for the comments. I screwed up and obviously posted this in the wrong board. Let me move so others see.
