Laughing Larry Doyle

Larry Doyle was born in Caseyville IL in 1886 and played almost entirely for the New York Giants from 1907 to 1920 except for a brief stint with the Chicago Cubs in 1916-1917. Nicknamed "Laughing Larry" he enjoyed a nice offensive career as the team captain and everyday star of three consecutive league pennant winners from 1911-1913. His .408 career slugging percentage was the top mark by an NL second baseman when he retired as were his career totals in hits (1887), doubles (299), triples (123), total bases (2654) and extra base hits (496). Larry also won the Chalmers Award as the league's best player in 1912 and the batting title in 1915 with a .320 average. He was Christy Mathewson's roommate for a couple years during his playing days and like Christy got a bout of tuberculosis and convalesced at Trudeau Sanitorium in Saranac Lake, New York. Unlike Christy though Larry survived the disease and was the last patient to leave the hospital after it closed due to an effective antibiotic treatment being discovered.

#4 in the 1914-1915 CJ set. Larry Doyle

Let's see what you got?

I'm looking forward this thread he is probably my favorite Non HOF Pre War player. I have all his T206s but here are a couple that are a little less common

Nice threads...I'm working on this Doyle back run and a T205 Doyle back run. I need to make some more scans. Very underrated player who has lots of cards in all sorts of vintage card series...

Thank you, A.J. Aside from T3s this was one of the first large cards I ever bought. It's been a slippery slope since then as I have acquired a couple of dozen varied cabinet-size cards comprising M110s, T4s, Old Mills, N173s, W600s etc. They grow on you.

My first prewar card was a t206 Doyle. I don't have a scan handy but here are some photos I do have.

Great presentation on that piece of art....the others in this thread aren't too shabby either. It seems Larry had a following...

Thanks Leon! Many of my best signed pre-war cards feature Larry Doyle and so I have, indeed, become quite a fan of his!
