Impressions of Goodwin Results

How about 1 thread to discuss the results...what did everyone think?

I think the RH T206's sold about where they should...the W600 Mack went for a tidy sum.

Some crazy SOB paid 200K for a piece of a wagner...and another nice Ruth Rookie sells for a lot of semolians!!!!!!

jimross 08-24-2012 07:38 AM

U will kick yourself not paying $200k for the Wagner when that Wagner can sell for $1M in 10 yrs..... (at least that's what Goodwin says)

sportscardpete 08-24-2012 07:40 AM

The w600 Mack - I thought it could have went for more. I'm not that old but I haven't really seen one of those around. The other w600's went pretty high too.

oldjudge 08-24-2012 07:44 AM

I think Ruth is hot and everything else went at solid/expected prices. A good auction for Bill. It will be interesting to see what happens in Legendary now. They have some great Ruth cards and some W600s (and the amazing Dreier material) so if they also do well it may be that, like the stock market, the sportscards market is improving, albeit slowly.

margoaepi 08-24-2012 08:02 AM

I picked up the N300 Brouthers. I'm waffling between thinking I got a good deal and thinking I was one bid too high.

ullmandds 08-24-2012 08:04 AM

I won lot #215...a blue back crofts candy collins...I think I paid fair market on it!

Mikehealer 08-24-2012 08:16 AM

I like the Collins, just never got around to bidding on it. The e103 Crawford was a real beauty.

atx840 08-24-2012 08:20 AM

The brown Lenox went lower then expected, still couldn't pull the trigger.

ullmandds 08-24-2012 08:22 AM

i agree...the Brown lenox looks like a bargain...compared to a beater magie...amongst many others!!!!

Bicem 08-24-2012 08:27 AM

I won this for just a hair under what it sold for in REA in 2011 so can't complain.

No doubt, Scott. That thing seemed like it'd never end!

Probably a crazy SOB that paid up for the Mack as well. Although it appears to be one of 2-3 known.

5:38 am CST, you East coast guys can just get up in the am after a full nights sleep and put your final bids in!

I was still up at 6 AM EST. I didn't quite make it to the end, but my bid still held up. It was a really long day for me before the auction even started. So, I was off to a bad start. Paying for it today.

Nice pickup Jeff! That is a very clean looking 20.

Bicem 08-24-2012 09:49 AM

Thanks, looking forward to cracking it.

Goodwin

Jeff,

Nice pickup on the Matty. Submit for a regrade? Looks like a good candidate for a bump-up.

Tony

Blunder19 08-24-2012 10:27 AM

Very Happy with my pick up.. I had this priced at the same range as the Dessau... so it went for much cheaper then what I thought it would end at.

Those were among the few cards I had bids in on, and that kept me up late with my finger on the bid button...just couldn't quite do it.

Chris - did you land that Bowerman? Truly a unique card, and it actually looks like a real T206 on the front, which made it especially appealing to me.

Its a very clean & unique example, exactly what I look for. I started dozing off @ 3:15MST, Johnny was up and was going to txt me if it got to 3mins. We both forgot that Goodwin had a timeout and missed getting a final bid in on Bowerman & Engle. Not too happy with myself :(

Sandbagger....so much for the hiatus :).

atx840 08-24-2012 11:43 AM

Congrats John, that proof is outstanding.

jimross 08-24-2012 11:43 AM

John,

You only picked up one T206 SL Blank back and not the other one? I would expect the same winner won both of them since they ended at the exact same price.

Way to go John - those are fantastic items. The Bowerman and the proof are superb!

Hi Mike,

I agree on the E103 Crawford. I placed an early marker bid on that one, but gave up on it in favor of the D304 Butter Krust Crawford (which I won). I'm quite pleased with that one - a bit of a bargain I think.

Cheers,
Blair

MVSNYC 08-24-2012 12:27 PM

nice wins John! i was the underbidder on the proof...glad it's going into your collection.

terjung 08-24-2012 12:46 PM

The color on that Bates proof is incredible! Congrats!

tbob 08-24-2012 01:21 PM

I'm going to kick myself for not bidding just one more time on the E94 olive Cobb but my bid plus the juice would have put it around $1800 and that's a lot for an authentic even if the card is nice. Besides the buyer probably would have come right back with another bid. Whoever won it just wore me out, every time I bid, he bid. Boom, boom, boom. The winner was probably prepared to go up in to the 2ks so I'll lick my wounds. Still need the olive and the violet Cobbs to complete the 6 color variation of the Cobbs. I think that thread about authentic vs. SGC 10, and how most went with the 10 might have played a part in my pulling back :(

tbob 08-24-2012 01:23 PM

John- that Bates proof is a stunner. If I am not mistaken, I bid on and barely got nosed out on that same card about 20 years ago in an online auction from Virginia. Went for a lot less then though...

Those W600s went for a lot of money. Paper loss on the front and still up to $500. Glad I picked up my Donlin for the same price without the paper loss.

philliesphan 08-24-2012 04:27 PM

Brown Lenox

For the handful of you that said the Brown Lenox looked like a bargain, are you referring to the Frank Smith PSA 1 Brown Lenox?

I was the underbidder on the McQuillan, and just couldn't justify a $6+K bid for an Authentic card because of the rare back. But that one did close nearly $700- higher than the Frank Smith PSA 1.

Oh well -- no wins for me!

Agreed. I thought those would go for twice what they did.

I was thinking of both brown Lenoxes

E93 08-24-2012 06:34 PM

I was just thinking of the extreme rarity of brown Lenox in relation to other T206 backs that are not that tough, relatively speaking. I think all of the brown Lenoxs are either unique or one of two known for a particular front. It is much tougher to get a brown Lenox example than even a BL 460 or Drum or Uzit. I am just thinking relative to other backs and prices.

Did anyone else notice the E98 PSA 6 Kling didn't get an opening bid of $500? Once I gave up on the E94 Cobb at 9pm, I switched over and tried to put a bid on the Kling but because the extended bidding had just started and there were no bids on the Kling, I was unable to place the bid. What was unusual about the no bids on the red Kling was that there were no Klings in the Swamp Find and this Kling is the highest graded, not just of a red Kling, but any Kling in general. Kling is also one of the tougher of the E98s so it is interesting that the Swap Find may have impacted the sale of the Kling with all those 8s and 9s of the other cards being found.
I relate this because there has been a great discussion of what impact the Swamp Find might have on future sales of E98s, particularly red ones, but all E98s in general. Perhaps we are finding out....

I saw that, but I figured if no one was to bid the min, I shouldn't either. It could show up next auction with a lower minimum bid.

Jake- you might be right but $500 for a PSA 6 Kling would have been a good price a year ago. Of course you have to figure in the "juice" and the postage so you would have been looking at about $625 total.

IMO, I would wait for the dust to settle on the Black Swamp "Debacle", instead of taking a speculative bet. Even though this card wasn't found in the find I would still be weary.
