Displays

Mike & Mark,

Both rooms present very well and w/such great items. Thanks so much for sharing pictures of both your collection and room/s. I hope one day I'll be able to display my items in an organized manner like both of you.

Hi Matt...

The two on the ends came from Lelands about 4-5 years ago. They are quite early, and I know nothing about them or their origin. Have never seen another pair.

The two in the middle are from noted Sculptor, Jack Lambert. Carlton Hendricks has written about these on his website. They are circa 1920s-30s, and the one that resembles Lou Gehrig is sometimes seen atop a Spalding Base (in the form of a Trophy).

Lastly, the tiny one is something I found on eBay. Though very small, it has great detail, and appears to be circa 1880s (based on the uniform). I have no idea of its origin, but it sure fit well in that little gap on the shelf!

Very nice Indians room. OMG the Indian Fever record...awesome.

I need to figure out an option for my jerseys like these hanging shelf setups some of you guys have.

Lordstan 08-04-2016 09:15 PM

Some great rooms everyone.
I wonder if all of those with uniforms have seen this article about the baseball HOF and how it recommends storing them?
I am not so sure I share their card holder concerns short term, but it's a good read.

Andy,

Enjoyed viewing the pictures of your Indians collection; like how you have your items set up. Also, I think it's so cool how you have the signatures as a border around the top; such a cool idea.

Vandy showcase

7 Attachment(s)
I very recently bought this 72" showcase for $65 delivered, so that I can finally properly display a good portion of my Johnny Vander Meer collection.

My new showcase is mostly dedicated to his historic 1938 rookie season in which he threw back-to-back no hitters and was the NL winning pitcher in the All Star Game at Crosley Field.

I'm thrilled to add this to my office where I get to enjoy it daily.

My thoughts exactly! Kind of on subject, I would love, love, love to have one of those rotatining displays that are kind of like a ferris wheel. I think jewelers used them. Anyone have one?

C'mon, Dave. That room is decorated for you, not your son. I don't see one thing on those walls that a four-year-old boy would enjoy.

Thanks Mike, Chris, Rob & Randall. I really appreciate the compliments.

The way that I found the showcase was pretty unusual. I was driving down a minimally traveled rural road to play golf at the local golf course last Thursday and I spotted this showcase with a for sale sign on it along side the road. It had my name all over it!

I couldn't believe it cost me $65 and it's in great shape.
Just what the doctor ordered.... :D

Rob,

The last time I was in Capital City Antique Mall (Salt Lake) there was one for sale. Not sure if it worked or the price but I remember seeing one for sale. From the front door it was in the very back left corner of the building.

Edited to add: We hit all the antique shops in the valley at least 5-6 times a year so if I find another for sale I'll let you know.

Mike - I love how you put the mini baseball bats and baseballs in your loving cup trophies! Great collection!!

Love it!!

Hey Mike, I get a love/hate feeling when you post pictures. Didn't you say you were going to have a garage sale pretty soon? That Spalding trophy on your desk looks overwhelmed by everything else in the room, I could find a better place to display that for you!!

If I'm ever in Ann Arbor, I want to visit Mike.

Hey Mike, amazing collection.
I love how it's displayed.
I'm curious... If you don't mind me asking, what's your earliest item?
Also, great bats... What's your best/favorite??

Thanks in advance for indulging me.

Thank you for the kind words Brent.

My earliest pieces are the gas lamps for 1878 (Hartford and Chicago)
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...0/IMG_2191.jpg

These Villeroy and dishes are from the 1880s. I have two plates and two tumblers from the set.

http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q304/mjkm90/002.jpg

Regarding bats. I love them, but have sold off many of the most valuable to fund other areas of my collection. My best (favorites now) are my mushroom knobs (Spalding and Pennant), ball knob (Piper), and a really long 1880s round knob (second from the right is this pic). Sorry I don't have pics of the Mushroom knobs at this moment.

Huysmans 08-11-2016 02:30 PM

Hey Mike,
Thanks for posting those.
I've always loved the matched Hartford/Chicago figural pieces...
And your Villeroy and Boch plates/tumblers are in amazing condition!
Thanks for sharing!

Wow! I'd like to see a bigger picture of that. My daughter just started at Pitt, and I learned that Posvar Hall and Schenley Plaza now stand where Forbes Field used to stand. In the hallway of Posvar Hall they have a homeplate plaque in the floor of the hall in the same spot as the original Forbes Field home plate.

Epic doesn't begin to describe it. I would put a great deal of thought into the best way to mount and present the pieces in a secure/beautiful way. It's warranted :)

AWESOME! My only thought would be to rip out your existing window and replace with a half round, matching your Forbes window. Easy enough! :p

I tried having the concrete and window built into an inner wall but my builder wouldn't do it because of potential liability!

Build a faux wall that is simply 6 in smaller than the wall u wanted to build structurally and place the faux wall up against the permanent existing wall.

slidekellyslide 08-31-2016 07:18 AM

A window from Forbes Field????!!!! That was torn down nearly 50 years ago, can you tell us the story about how you obtained it?
