Advice collecting 1955 Brooklyn WS champs

My collecting goal this year centers around Brooklyn's first and only world championship back in 1955.

The 1956 Topps Brooklyn Dodgers 24-card subset is a great fit to that 1955 team in that it has a team card, a manager card (Alston), and player cards for all the key players and even most minor ones. However, there are 4 Dodgers from the 1955 WS who are not included--
  • Frank Kellert, Russ Meyer, and Don Hoak are all shown as Chicago Cubs since they joined the Cubs immediately following the 1955 season.
  • George "Shotgun" Shuba is not in the 1955 Topps set at all.
I am a big "display guy", so I have a handful of options. I'm curious what you all think is best. For what it's worth, my display case holds 28 "landscape" cards in seven rows of 4.
  1. Build my display without these four guys - maybe filling the slots with other 55 WS-related cards or items.
  2. Use the 1955 Golden Stamps series for these four players since it includes all four as Dodgers
  3. Use 1956 Topps for the three Cubbies and use the stamp for Shuba only
  4. Use 1956 Topps for the three Cubbies and use 1955 Bowman for Shuba
  5. Use 1955 Bowman for Hoak, Shuba, and Meyer and use something else for Kellert (1956 Topps Cubs, 1955 Topps Archives Dodgers, 1955 Golden Stamp)
  6. Something different

I know there are a few other display guys out there that run into this kind of situation. Luckily, I have a while to decide since I only have 9 of the 24 main Dodgers to begin with.

If it were me,I would go for the Dodgers that are on the '56 Topps.I wouldn't add the players in other teams uniforms.Maybe add Topps archive, but not the stamps or Bowmans.
Just what I would do.But which ever way you go,I'm sure it will look good.

Of the numbered options, I like option 5 the best but I would use a card of Kellert in a Dodgers uniform from 1955 Topps Archives if available. Good luck with your choice. I am sure it will look awesome no matter what you decide.

This is good advice. It keeps everything a card (vs stamp) and also keeps everyone a Dodger. The fact that 1955 and 1956 Topps look pretty similar is helpful also.

Are you creaitve?

How about photoshopping the 3 1956 Topps cards and printing a version with the Dodgers name and Uniform (Topps airburshed all the time - why can't we?) and create a virtual 1956 Topps Shuba card?

Cheers,
Patrick

I like the idea of using the stamps

Gave it a few days thought. Will try to photoshop the missing 4 as 56 Topps Dodgers. If they turn out okay, will use them.

i know that topps produced some cards in i believe 1995 or so of the missing 1955 brooklyn dodgers, below are some examples of the cards you need that were made. every now and then they appear on ebay as dodger topps archives or dodgers dem bums series. i just checked and they are all currently on check out my cards(comc) just type in dodgers dtopps dem bums ins each and you should be able to find all that you need. hope this helps.

Yes, I like these, but I don't think the set included the other two guys. An artist friend of mine is working on Dodgerizing the '56 Meyer, Kellert, Hoak cards and will make me a 56 Shuba from scratch. Will post images when she is done.

i think don hoak has a regular 55 topps card issued? and shuba is below. I just bought on comc a roy campanella 55 topps archives. that set is pretty cool as it includes everyone on the 55 team roster that didnt have a regular 55 topps card issued. i would love to see the 5 customs, that would be really cool. hope this helps you.

You are right!!! Wow, how did I miss that? May get the Bums cards and the homemade ones and then compare.

hey jason,
the easiest way to see what they all look like is to go to comc type in dodgers dem bums in the search box. i believe they have 21 different ones currently listed(so you can see how they look like) some of the players in the set that are not in the regular set besides those already mentioned are roger craig, carl erskine, don drysdale, bob borkowski, walt alston, carl furillo, tommy lasorda and don newcombe (along with the campanella, shuba, meyers and shuba) and i think most are listed for just a couple bucks each, some even cheaper. best of luck with this set.
