Stupid question about pronounciation
Settle it for me please, because I've heard it both ways:
Is Goudey pronounced "goo-dee" or "gow-dee?" |
I always thought it was Goo-day but I don't know why.
|
It's Goodee in Canada.
|
I've always said goodee... But I hear a lot of people call it Gowdee?
|
I've always said Goo-die but I hear a lot of people say Gow-die.
|
Oh goodness. I've poured my heart and soul (and wallet) into collecting both the 33s and 34s, and if I have been mispronouncing the set name all this time, that sucks.
|
Gow-Dee
|
Most of the dealers I know call them Gow dees.
|
So it rhymes with Howdy Doody. Take your pick.
|
How aboot Gow-Dee?
How-dee, it's Gow-dee.
I have never heard it differently, but then again I am not Canadian (it's 'aboot' time I revealed this fact). Brian |
I've always pronounced it Gow-dee. It never occurred to me to pronounce it Goo-dee, and I don't remember ever hearing it pronounced that way.
|
Put me in the Gow-dee camp. It would never in a billion years occur to me to pronounce that word "Goo-die."
|
GOW -DEE
How about bo-men or bow -men ? |

It was always goodee in my head until I went to a few shows. Everyone else I've heard pronounced it gowdee.
|
I always pronounced it goo-dee. Then I heard a few years ago that Gow-dee is correct. I still can't bring myself to say Gow-dee, so I have given up henceforth will say and think goo-dee, even if it isn't correct!
I DID however, start pronouncing Lajoie as Lah-zhway instead of La-Joy. Once I heard it pronounced on GOTT audio version. Lah-zhway sounds much better than La-joy IMO. |
I have a Louisiana "French/Cajun" uncle called Goudeau. The French pronunciation is Goo-doh. In French, I believe "Goudey" would be pronounced "Goo-day". For what it's worth, I call the cards "Gowdys" I also say "La-joy" instead of Loo ah shoo weh. Here in Houston, the San Jacinto Monument is pronounced "Sann juh sento" instead of the correct Spanish "Sahn Hah Seen-toh" And San Felipe road is pronounced "Sann Phillipy" if you are a native Houstonian. FWIW...Rob
|
What about Bowman?
I've heard it pronounced like "Bauman" and also like "Bow (like the ribbon on a gift) -man". I've been collecting since the 1970s and I still don't know which is correct. |

It's also pronunciation and not pronounciation to be correct.

Someone told me that Bela, as in Bela Lugosi and Bela Bartok, was pronounced Bela. All this time I'd been pronouncing it Bela.

Gowdey
And I was born about 1 mile from their headquarters! |
A member of the family told me eight or ten years ago that it was pronounced GOW-dee.

I attended several key Midwest shows from 1972-1977, where many pioneers were present, and every time a Goudey was mentioned, it was pronounced, "GOW-DEE". ---Brian Powell

Po-Tay-Toe, not Po-Tah-Toe
Toe-May-Toe, not To-Mah-Toe. Let's call the whole thing off. |

Goudey
I am in the GOW DEE camp.......don't really collect them, but that is how a dealer pronounced it early in my collecting career. No idea if it is correct...

I've always heard it Gow-dee as well.
For the first time ever in a youtube video of all places I heard someone pronounce it bow (same sound as cow) man. I've always heard it bow (like a bow tie or bow and arrow) man and when he said it the other way it sounded so stupid to me and I actually remember saying to myself "OMG moron, that's not how you say it, stop saying that!" LOL as for Lajoie...I've actually always pronounced that lah-zhwah (both vowel sounds like when the doctor tells you "say ahh") |
