Good ole Willie Mays

I got a laugh from this baseball. Mays always had to make a statement

Though I did not see it I have been told he did the same thing to a 3000 hit baseball, right over Roberto Clemente's signature.
Someone actually took a ss Clemente ball to start making it a 3000 hit ball.

I was collecting the 64 Topps Giants set and needed Willie. Was told he was signing TTM for $100. Sent the $ in and he signed the back

Do these Willie Mays 16x20s from Mill Creek look good? Is there any way to feel good about the Say Hey hologram or are we past that point?

Would like to get one, but just not sure.

I was in a show lineup a few years back getting an autograph, and the subject of Mays came up. The guy next to me tells a story of "I was in a lineup for Mays once when... " types, but I'll relay it back anyhow.

Some guy in a lineup had a home plate full of sig's, all done in black felt. When he brought it up to Mays, Mays grabbed a blue sharpie.
The guy asked "Mr. Mays can you please sign in black pen."
Mays: "I only sign in blue."
Guy: "Mr. Mays, can I please have it in black?"
After some back and forth, Mays grabs the black sharpie, signs his name, and then does a loop with the sharpie all over the other signatures on the guys home plate. According to buddy, he reached over the table and grabbed Mays, and security jumped in.

Years of work on his collectible were ruined.

That's funny because everyone on my 500 HR litho signed in blue, but he signed in black. I have a couple of things I would have liked for him to sign, but it's just not worth it. He can be a prick, but not on my dime.

I used to tell people that if Willie was your idol, NEVER go to an autograph show to get him to sign something.

I would see him routinely sign a baseball and then roll it across the table back to you knowing the ink might smudge.

I dealt with The Say Hey Kid many times over a period of about 15 years ( late 1980s to early 2000s ) at shows and in private signings and he was always an a**hole to fans , promoters, dealers and everybody . He never discriminated ...he was that way to everyone. I've seen him deliberately wreck/ruin projects that took people years to work on and he did it without remorse or apology.
He is one person that I would probably not use CPR or a defribillator on if he needed it.
The story of my partner and me getting 100 Ron Lewis 500 HR posters signed by Willie is legendary in the collecting world .

I've seen more than one jersey signed upside down.

I feel kind of bad. I bumped this thread to ask if a Mays' autograph looked good, and I feel like I opened up a bunch of old wounds for people.

I should have picked a different Mays thread. Haha.

I held a ball where Mays wrote over Babe Ruth's autograph. It was startling to look at.

BillyCoxDodgers3B 04-23-2018 10:42 PM

If I recall correctly, he did the same thing over Babe Ruth on Barry Halper's 500 HR Club item. In that case it didn't really matter--the Ruth wasn't authentic to begin with.

Disappointing to hear such a legendary player acts in such a manner.

Ideally, in my view, if he agrees to a signing he should be more accommodating. Otherwise, if he really does not want to do it he should just stay home.

To me, the worst part is he is really defacing some baseball history.

The silver lining I supposed is when I met my favorite player before (not Willie although I am a fan of his on field) he was super nice.

The game when I got the Giants to sign my ball, Mays I guess stayed in the clubhouse until we all left. Marichal was so pleasant that i dont think any of us missed the 'Say nay' kid much.
