Sept 30, 1971 Senators Yankees

Last game in DC before the franchise moves to Texas. Washington is leading 7 to 5 with the Yankees up with two out top of 9. Disgruntled fans storm the field and the Senators forfeit the game.
Looking at the boxscore I see the stats count . Are there no winning and losing pitchers?

According to retrosheet, there were no winning or losing pitchers because the Yankees won the game despite the final score being 7 to 5 in favor of the Senators....if that makes sense.

Oops, Barry's got your answer

- of course, Paul Lindblad should have been the winning pitcher and Jack Aker should have been the loser.

I believe I can state for sure than no performance bonuses were affected. LOL

Barry is right

Per Baseball reference:

Quote:

Forfeit games have several interesting scoring quirks. Like other called games, players are credited with their statistics for the game if enough of the game had been played for it to count as an official game. If the team credited with the win was leading at the time of the forfeit, the pitchers are credited with a win or loss exactly as they would be in any other called game. If the forfeiting team was ahead at the time that the game was called, no pitcher is credited with a win or loss. All forfeits are officially listed as 9-0 victories for the team that benefits from the forfeit, regardless of the actual status of the game.
Probably cost Joe Grzenda a save.

I have an audio recording of this game. Seems Washington was not happy to see the team go, especially Frank Howard.
