Satchel[l] Paige autograph

Did he sometimes sign his first name with two 'l's?

Scott - what's the date on that? I can't make it out.

Looks like 1947 to me.

I don't know what current thinking is, but back in the late 1970s I believe the consensus among those I traded with back then was that he did occasionally sign with 2 L's.

I'm no autograph expert, but have heard that he sometimes signed with two l's. I've seen double l examples before.

I'm no autograph expert, but since years back have heard it that he signed both ways. I've seen double l signatures for sale before.

Scott,
FWIW, this example of his sig looks completely authentic to me.

Here is a scan of my 1940's Satchel Paige luggage tag. Notice that he spells his name with two "l's.

Thanks guys. It's dated '1941', and I agree that it looks authentic - I honestly didn't know if he signed with 2 'l's, but I did expect affirmative responses.

This was the first Paige-signed item I've considered going after, and I think it went very low (SCP last night), but I had my $$$'s sunk in another piece, which I was thankful to win. Should have asked you all about this a bit earlier.

Learned something new today...great info guys!

Do you think the 'P' in Paige looks off? I have never seen one signed like that before. Even in the example above in the luggage tag, it looks different. Makes me question that one.

If its really a 1941 signature that means the photo would have to be at least that old and an original pre-1941 photo of Paige is worth MUCH more than the signature anyways (but the signature is good). I would love to see the whole piece! There are only 5-10 pre-WW2 Paige images known and probably a thousand signed photos.

Rhys - it was in the last SCP auction. It was a very nice photo, and I think the piece went for $500 + juice.

I had my bids tied up in a bunch of cards that I eventually lost most of :(

But I did end up with the 1913 Wagner photo.

I got the catalog but only browsed it so I missed it entirely. Sounds like someone got a good deal.
