1952 Topps Mantle - Any Concerns?

I'm considering purchasing this PSA graded 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle. The front picture of the card and the flip match images on the PSA certification site and VCP from a June 2017 auction of the card. The last image is of the card and has the username of the seller from the forum it was listed on along with the date, so that appears to validate that he has the card in hand. At the time of posting the card for sale, he only had 4 posts on that forum, but it appears to check out. Was hoping to get some opinions from others here. Thanks in advance for your help.

I would be concerned about the price. It looks like it was offered for 25k, "sold" for 19.85k and now is being offered for 16k. I would be curious why the seller is losing money on a 52T Mantle. Are you looking to do an in person deal? How are you protecting yourself from getting taken? Would he be open to using a third party?

He didn’t buy it for $19.85K. He says he bought it for $16K in August. This all assumes he is truthful. I plan on using a credit card for payment.

Have you thought about doing this in person in broad daylight in a public place ? A plane ticket nowadays is cheap insurance for a card and a price like this.--just a thought from a paranoiac ,.

Appreciate the suggestion. We are on opposite coasts and work has me very tied up for a few weeks.

I did end up purchasing the card using a credit card through PayPal. Wish me luck.

I think it seems ok, and doing it in a public place assumes the OP has 16k to hand over. Credit card protection sounds reasonable.

Nothing screams problematic to me. Hope it works out for you.

Sale fell through. He says PayPal put a hold on the funds until Nov 15 so we agreed to a refund.

I was able to work a deal out after all and have now added this card to my collection. Thanks to those that helped. It's a nice upgrade from the PSA 2 I have.

The centering and color look much better on the 2.5. Nice pick up.

It looks like there is paper loss on his neck. I like the color better on the 2 and centering on the 2.5.

Not a bad card to have doubles on!

I don't believe it has been mentioned yet, but you now have both versions of the 1952 Topps Mantle. The 2 has the black line under the yellow Yankees logo box and the e in Mantle has the tail, while the 2.5 has no black line under the yellow box and the e in Mantle has no tail.

The last SCD I have listed them as variations. They are DPs, so one is no more scarce than the other, but if the Registry ever recognizes the variation( which I doubt), you will be further along on a master set than most :)

Thanks for the comments everyone. I like the colors on the 2, but even with the small scuff or surface wear on the 2.5, I like it better because of the centering and the fact that it has no creases outside of the corners. I only recently learned of the two variations because of the fact that it's a double print. Because of that, I will likely hold onto the 2 as well, so that I have one of each.

Congrats on your nice mantles!

Congrats! And that has to be one of the sweetest decisions a collector can make in this hobby: should I keep both of my 52T Mantles? Hmm... let's just look these over and think...
