Awesome article!

Ben,
Thanks for posting the terrific article on Jimmy C!

It's nice to see Jimmy get a nice shout out in the hobby for his unbelievable Gehrig photo collection.
He's definitely one of the hobby good guys.

roarfrom34 09-05-2013 06:55 AM

I've always enjoyed him sharing his amazing collection....Does he still post?

mr2686 09-05-2013 07:28 AM

Jimmy's one of the good guys in the hobby. There's not much out there that he can't find, whether it's by internet, auctions or by networking. Truly remarkable.

Ladder7 09-05-2013 07:47 AM

Need more like him. Great guy!

sayhey24 09-05-2013 09:52 AM

Couldn't agree more on Jimmy -- one of the real good guys!

JoeyF1981 09-05-2013 11:09 AM

Great article! Thanks for sharing. Got a chance to personally speak to Jimmy about the hobby and his collection. Great guy and definitely has a huge passion and tons of knowledge

king of clout

ben,
thanks for sharing this excellent interview with Jimmy.
He has a world class collection and is a prince of a fellow.
His answers to the various questions were spot on. I'm always
happy to see the fogel, oser, yee book mentioned as a key vintage
photography source!
all the best,
barry

I'll echo the thoughts of many here...he is a great guy and was a great poster...I'm not sure why he left, but he started some of the best threads on the memorabilia side. Maybe someday he will return.

GrayGhost 09-05-2013 12:20 PM

He got offended when some questioned why he would/could pay more money than some would kill for to pay bills for a photo.

He was offended easily if someone questioned a photo, etc. But, that said, he has GREAT taste and if he is fortunate enough to be not basically living day to day, then enjoy the hobby. He was/is as passionate for what he collects as anyone probably is.

LOL... it has NOTHING to do with this incoherant nonsense. Your problems are yours.... Enough said/time taken on that. Just...WOW.
SMH

I will agree however, he has GREAT taste and is a very passionate collector.

STILL...SMH

Jimmy

Jimmy has been one of the biggest helps to me in learning about photos and is a class act second to none. Between Rhys, Ben and Jimmy, you could not find a better grouping of people leading this part of the hobby.

1880nonsports 09-05-2013 01:09 PM

most excellent

interview good but the pix spectacular - easy to see why one might go in this direction....

perezfan 09-05-2013 01:25 PM

Memorabilia Forum was far better when Jimmy was around. He started some threads that literally ran for years, and were very thought-provoking. For a couple of years, he was the key cog in this machine...

He was a good online friend, and was fun to trade with. Photos are his passion but he is well-versed in other areas as well. He is a world-class Beatles collector, too. I know he went through a renaissance of sorts, some health issues, and a downsizing phase. Glad to see he's still thriving...

Anyway, I hope he sees this thread and re-emerges at some point. This is definitely a better place with Jimmy on-board!

Runscott 09-05-2013 02:20 PM

I echo the positive things that others have said about Jimmy - I have had some of my favorite photo conversations with Jimmy, and he has always been very respectful of my opinion, even though we don't always agree on certain aspects of the hobby. Same is true for Ben and David - we have some incredibly knowledgeable people on this side of the forum, and also some really good people.

GrayGhost 09-05-2013 02:27 PM

Those were reasons he left from what I saw, but to Ben, I do apologize and if Jimmy is reading to him too, and Leon as well.

Too much personal bad stuff and I let it spill over here. UNCALLED FOR again.

Completely agree. He was... still is the man. He served(s) up a lot of energy and insight. He da man. He will be truly missed. RIP JIMMY.. RIP DUDE.... :)

The man didn't die did he? I saw RIP.

Agreed Scott.. I feel the same about you too. It was a rocky road but all good now. Why do I want ice cream all of a sudden?

Seriously though.. that picture of Jimmy with those photos. Every photo is a monster in its own way. Such an impressive display. And a GREAT story of building a world class collection with honesty, hard work, limited means and passion. I am glad to call the guy my friend.

Lordstan 09-05-2013 09:36 PM

I spoken to Jimmy in a while, but he is THE man!
It's really his fault for getting me into vintage photography as well. Up until interacting with him here, my collection of Gehrig items was more scattered. Seeing his photos and learning about them really helped, though I'm not sure that is really the right word, me focus much more on these beauty's. I love cards, but there is something about the photos that add something extra to the feeling I get when adding something new.
I think he stopped posting here for a few reasons, but perhaps the most likely is that his focus shifted to Beatles items.
In honor of the many great posts and friendship Jimmy provided, I am posting 2 things.

First is the painting I commissioned Graig Kreindler to make from Jimmy's 1925 Conlon image.
Here is the original picture
http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=12199
Kreindler
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ile_Conlon.jpg

Second is very likely my most favorite picture of all. He traded this to me with a very heavy heart. Gehrig with Christy Walsh's son. Obtained originally from the Walsh family.
http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=12200

Come to think about it. If Jimmy picked up a new Gehrig, he should be posting it here to show it off.

Hi Ben,
Im around ! But I to decided not to post that much of my collection up anymore. I change gears alot but photos and pins are still my main focus! Keep in touch my friend!
I will leave you with this little proverb

Jimmy.. If you are out there, we would like to see your beatles collection.

I talk to him about once a month and his health is not very good. He suffers from various issues (COPD, back issues etc...) but is quick and a joy to talk to. He is and has been one of my favorite people in the hobby. His collection of Beatles memorabilia is one of the best in the world especially his photos of them. He has forgotten more about the Beatles than I know. He still is posting photos for sale on eBay via Memory Lane. I would love for him to come back on here and post as well.

I'll gladly throw my hat in that ring...
Jimmy, time to make a holiday appearance.
The ghost of Christmas past, so to speak. ;)

Happy holidays!

Hi Ben. A big THANK YOU to everyone who took timeout of their busy day to post such kind words. However, I no longer collect Baseball memorabilia, and the only thing the Beatles & Baseball have in common is that the Beatles also played at Shea Stadium. My very best to you all, Jimmy BTW... If anyone is interested in Beatles Photography, here's a link to my Facebook page...

Add my tip of the hat to this tribute thread - Jimmy's enthusiasm was contagious, and inspired a lot of activity on the memorabilia board. Online and offline, he's a prince of a guy. We all lost when he moved on to his other interests, yet I couldn't be happier to read of his continued quest for excellence.

Well done, my friend.

Jimmy is a great guy and always helpful in making sure that any Beatles photos I have are correctly identified and dated. He is a passionate collector, fun to talk to and I wish he was still into sports photography. Happy Holidays Jimmy!

An ode to THE GREAT ONE-THE KING OFCLOUT- THE GREAT JIMBINO My friend Jimmy Catanzaro

He loved this thread.. we had lots of conversations about it.

He also took great pride in his beatle Facebook page where he has over 18k followers. He built that and his collection in such a short amount of time. Unbelievable really.. only jimmy could accomplish this. Please Ck it out and like/comment. If reading this, I hope you were able to experience Jimmy in some way. There was only one Jimmy.

——

Words cannot express what Jimmy meant to me but I will try. Jimmy was one of my very best friends. In hindsight, maybe the best friend i have ever had.
I first met Jimmy in 2007. He bought an autograph album from me with Jackie Robinson and Mantle along with various other players. I randomly called him to thank him for the purchase and to make sure he was happy. He was taken back and struck up conversation as only Jimmy could do. He asked me if I was a collector. Answer: yes
He asked me why i was selling such a piece then.
Answer: to raise money to buy Type 1 original photos. Do you know what those are? I asked.

Jimmy chuckled and couldn’t believe it. He was one of the only others that collected them the way I visioned my collection going. In fact, he was already at my vision and then some. He purchased the album as flat signatures to go with his established type 1 photos. They were “companion pieces” -jimmy coined this phrase along with many more now regularly used(pre-rookie etc).
Jimmy was way ahead of the curve. He always was. He introduced me to Henry Yee, Graig Kreindler and many more. He was instrumental in the building of my collection. He was a true mentor. We pushed each other for 7-8 years. I call it the type 1 arms race. We wanted to outdo each other.. find new nuggets “under rocks” , find new info on photos, stats etc. We both found such joy collecting together with the goal of building a photo museum.
In fact, it got so competitive that we had a major fall out for a year or so. We were the same in so many ways. Including, recognizing the importance of our friendship so we both got over our ego and vowed never to fight again. We realized that although building world class collections was a “goal” we really did it to enjoy life through collecting and friendships. We were unstoppable after that. We were just ALWAYS on THE SAME page.. except politics and religion. Lol. Which is so hilarious and shows that we all CAN het along.
We decided to look at both our collections as a whole and come up with a “super trade”. I will get his best Ruth’s and he will get my best Gehrig’s. We would each focus on one player. The price points had to be close of course but it is amazing how little we thought about THE TRADE of all photo TRADES. We just did it. It was prob a 100-150k trade. We just did it for fun.. as friends. Trusting each other.
After the trade, Jimmy decided to transition to his first Love, beatles. His second collecting love was gehrig. He built the greatest collection of gehrig photos ever established. It was documented in an article in Sports collectors daily shown earlier in the thread. In fact, both the photos in his hands are now in my collection. He decided.. what else can i do with this? At that time, jimmy recognized that beatles was untapped and he realized, although he could always add to his gehrig collection in numbers, it was strong enough at its current state. To add would cost a lot of money and unnecessary(complete as is). He always said.. quality vs quantity is the key.
We talked about it and he wanted me to have his best Gehrigs(some i traded him). So we figured out a deal where we could keep the best of the best “in the family” and he could use them to fund his next quest(THE ULTIMATE BEATLES COLLECTION). In a short time, he did just that.
Jimmy’s passion was unmatched. He was so well read.. his research was also second to non(Kreindler maybe). But if Jimmy was interested in something, no one knew more than him in any room. He was so generous with the info he gained as well. Too generous sometimes. I think, like anything in life these days, he was taken advantage of a bit. He would never forget being wronged but ferociously loyal to his best friends. He had the biggest heart and gave it to those who deserved it. He built up his friends. Reinforced our best attributes and just made us feel good.
In the past month, we spoke about our relationship.. our collections. How we helped each other build what we currently had. We dreamed of having an exhibit together.. Ruth/gehrig and beatles exhibit. Although we knew it was silly or just a a dream, it was so fun to talk about. I spoke to him Saturday and he was so excited. He added Two holy grail pieces the last couple weeks and was not able to enjoy them sadly but still had the trill of adding to his collection( ticket stub and record player).
In jimmy’s passing.. my collection means more to me now.. certain pieces for sure. I look at it as “our collection”. We built it together.
There is not one other person that can fill what jimmy provided me. He would be brutally honest with me ALWAYS and ALWAYS had my back. He would never judge.. there was NEVER and alternative motive to his advice. He cared and truly loved me as a brother. He told be countless times he was blessed to have a handful of real friends. Although i agreed with him, i never knew what he truly meant. Now I do. He is irreplaceable to me. I loved him for so many reasons. He was a true brother and perhaps my truest friend I have ever had or will ever have.

I didn’t want this to be thought out so i just wrote it raw(edit free-yeah you know me ) I hope I did you justice Jimmy. I love you buddy and happy you are pain free in paradise with your dear Mom. Maybe you are even able to share some time with the Babe, Lou, John and George on the flip side as well.

Your friend,

-The Dude-

mr2686 05-07-2018 07:02 AM

There have been a few times over the last 9 years when I've taken a break from both this board and collecting in general. Each time has been a positive experience leaving me with my batteries recharged and ready to dive in again. Unfortunately, I cannot say that about my time away from Sept of last year till Feb of this year because being away meant I missed this post and a chance to mourn and celebrate Jimmy.
Jimmy was always willing to share his knowledge about collecting, and offer kind words of encouragement. The only thing bigger than his collection was his heart. I remember one day a few years ago, opening the mailbox and finding a large envelope. Enclosed was an original Pride of the Yankees still that I had always admired. The enclosed note simply said "Mike, I thought you might like this, Jimmy".
People like Jimmy, Ben (Forever Young), Mark (Lordstan), Scott Garner, and so many others are what make this hobby (and this board) fun, and when they're gone, they are, and will be missed.
Ben, I know you were good friends with him, and I'm so so sorry for your loss.
Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go look at Jimmy's collection on-line and reminisce.

Lordstan 05-07-2018 01:25 PM

Mike,
Thanks.
I am proud to be included in that list of excellent Net54 members. I agree that those in your list, plus a great many others will be missed when they eventually are not here.
Jimmy was a great guy and his passion and friendship are missed by all who knew him.
