Buck Weaver TRUE rookie

Posted By: ty_c obb
Okay,I was reading about all the 19th century
stuff and not surprisingly the 'true' rookie
card escapes defintion. Is the Obaks issue
Buck's 'true' rookie card (a gorgeuos,real
fine card!), or the somewhat bland T207?
Or is there an earlier major league issue
that is the real true undisputable rookie
card?

Posted By: B Hodes
I am with the first Major League card school of "Rookie" cards.
The minor league cards may be his "first card" but not his "rookie card." After all the common definition of "Rookie" is rookie in the majors -- the "Rookie of the Year" is given to the best player in his first Major League season.

Oh and I really like the T207 Weaver it is one of the nicest cards in that set (the text on the back of it captures the kind of player weaver was too). The minor league card is attractive too, but nothing interesting is on the back.

Posted By: Andy Baran
Weaver has several Minor League Cards from 1911. His first Major League card is the 1912 T207, which I consider to be his Rookie Card. It's up to you which one you feel is his Rookie Card.

The one thing that I think most of us are in agreement on is that the appearance/aesthetics of the card has nothing to do with whether or not it is a rookie, while it may affect the desirability of the card.

Posted By: TBob
I agree with BH, the 207 Weaver is a very nice looking card. People who dislike the 207s on aesthetics dislike the brown and tan colors but they have a certain "moody" quality about them which is very appealing when the card is in nice shape. (My 2 cents worth)

Posted By: runscott
Some of the t207's are really cool, though I can see why many collectors don't like the set as a whole. I especially like the McGraw and some of the catcher cards. The thing that detracts most from the set in my view, is not the moodiness caused by the brown background and lack of color variety, but rather how ugly they look when registration is not dead-perfect. Cards such as Johnson and Reulbach looks particularly ghastly when not registered perfectly, since the likenesses aren't close to reality to begin with.

($1,850), 1911 E100-2 Bishop & Co. ($2,500), 1911 Gilmartin Printing Co. ($7,500), 1911 T212-3 Obak ($3,250), 1911 T4 Obak cabinets ($11,000), 1911 D310 Pacific Coast Biscuit ($3,250), 1911 Zeenut ($2,500), He has only one true "rookie" card the 1912 T207 ($1,100). Frank

Posted By: Brian C Daniels
especially Bob's idea that in presentable grade they sort of have a nice nostalgic feel about them and some of the short commentaries are appealing and confirming as well! I have been buying a few high grade hall of Famers here and there and they seem to be gaining momentum....I bought PSA 7 Tinker last year on e-bay for $190.00 and was surprised to see opne sell for $500 about six months ago.

Posted By: brian parker
Like most of the 1911 Obak set, the Obak of Weaver also has an interesting write-up on the back, revealing his attributes in broad strokes in the distinctive, 1911 Obak style:

"Weaver, the hardest hitting utility player in the League, has played sensational ball in both infield and outfield. Has a wonderful throwing arm and is one of the most natural ball players in the game today. Can play any position on the infield, covers lots of ground, is very fast and shows up like a star"

As far as the most interesting front, I don't think you can beat the full body pose in the 1911 Zeenut set--it is incredible how the photo captures his personality.

Brian

Posted By: leon
I like what some of the cards say about him like the obak and the T207..since you really can't read the scan I posted it (the T207) says:

"Smiling George Weaver," shortstop of the White Sox, is one of the 1912 spring crop who made good early and stuck to the job. Weaver broke in with Yorke in 1910, joined San Francisco in 1911 and here he is now a big league regular after 3 seasons of play. He is of the fast, shifty type of infielder and a steady, while not a star, batsman. With Frisco Weaver hit .282 and fielded .898. They never catch him with that eternal smile wiped off.

I really like the term "shifty" in there....otherwise, his 1911 card does capture his essence nicely....regards all

Posted By: Elliot
Since Weaver didn't play for SanFrancisco until 1911, doe that mean that the E-221 Bishops is a 1911 issue not a 1910 issue?
