1984 Topps

1984 is simply one of my favorite years. I was 11 years old and loved baseball. I felt nostalgic when I got home from work and pulled out my 1984 Topps set to flip through. The layout and colors still look really fresh to me after all this time. The pics are just low quality, amateur cellphone pics I took while flipping through. No graded cards, just a sharp set in my binder that makes me happy. I own cards that are "worth" a lot more, but few of them put as big of a smile on my face. Carry on!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7bf3897345.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a7d0626e99.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a929e534ea.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...26607cae58.jpg

What a beautiful set! I remember also as I was your age ripping packs. It's a great set. I'm gonna work on the OPC counterpart someday.

My collecting started a few years later ('87), but I always liked both the '83 and '84 sets. Probably the two best looking sets of the 80's in my opinion!

I wonder why Topps changed from it's prototype head in the box design to the final head outside the box design ?

Thanks, Rob! The OPC would be fun, too! A lot of good memories. I have mostly collected 50s and 60s cards during most of my collecting life, but I have really returned to my roots lately with 1970s and 1980s cards. These are the guys I grew up with and have a real attachment to. It makes me understand how you guys who grew up watching Mantle, Mays, etc. must feel. I enjoy collecting those great players of the game, too, but collecting players from my generation is extra special to me.

Al, I think the head outside the box just looks better, the other way cuts off the tops of the players heads. :)

This is a great thread!:)

I have a few 80's sets in binders. I have several cards worth more than all the binder sets combined. I do like the vintage cards but looking through those binders puts a bigger smile on my face than any vintage card ever could.

I heard/read about how great the older players I collect were but never got to go to a game and see them. Those players in the binders give me that big smile because I was lucky enough to see them play in person. When flipping through those binders I will run across some average player and remember some crazy play I got to watch them make while at a game.:)

Whenever I see an '84 Topps Mattingly or Strawberry, I still find myself pausing just a second longer and handling them like they are the most delicate of treasures.

I feel exactly the same! I have a high stress career, and to come home and flip thru my 83 Topps Baseball or 82 Topps Football that I collected when I was a kid...just makes me smile and gives me peace.

I agree cool looking set

and when you come to those " rookie crazy " days of 1984...yea, you pause for a second when you pass the Strawberry card ,etc... and cringe at what you paid , or your master plan to get 10 or each, or some other 1984 baseball card fad !! still good ole days I guess

CobbSpikedMe 02-26-2019 06:21 PM

I love the 1984 Topps set! The Mattingly was the first card I really coveted. I wanted one so badly but I was a little kid and didn't have the money to ever buy one. When I finally got one years later it was my absolute favorite card I owned. You're right Bigdaddy, when I see the Mattingly or Strawberry I take a pause every time just to admire it and remember those days long ago.
