Now what do I do?! (1950s Topps/Bowman)

2 Attachment(s)
This is my first post on the post-war forum. I just purchased over 2600 Topps and Bowman cards in Huggins and Scott. I don't know what's come over me. I am a T206 card collector, with a primary interest in signed T206 cards. But, now I can't seem to resist stacks of 1950s cards. In the past week, I traded eight T206 PSA 5 commons for an entire 1960 Topps set. And then I sold a pair of dupe signed T206 cards (Marquard and Doyle), and have put the money into these piles of commons.

I don't know. They were just calling me. What do I do now!?

Simply serve two masters. What's another 15-ish more sets? I straddle the fence between pre-war (mostly tobacco) and 1950's goodness. You just need to re-set your morning alarm for at least an hour earlier to scroll through all of the eBay searches.:D

This quote really resonated with me. I still love T206s, but I want a little action on the side!

:D

It may be dramatic but it best sums up the way I approach collecting. I have little tolerance for standing idle. I started with 50s/60s but have retired the Sixties. My Fifties collection is to the point where I needed a little something extra. Enter T206 and friends. Now Topps and Bowman just fill in the empty days between Pre-War scores (mostly). Every once in a while I still go on a Fifties binge to keep the monkey fed.:D:D

Welcome to the dark side! ;)
Keep them raw and have fun thumbing through them.

12 Steps

There can be no denying the parallels between drug/booze addictions and a collector's mentality.

Have you every spent money on your monkey you shouldn't have spent?
Have you then spent more?
Have you ever tended to your monkey on the job?
Have you ever arrived late to or left early from work because your monkey needed feeding?
Have you ever cancelled a social engagement to feed your monkey?
Has you monkey-feeding schedule ever interferred with sleep?
Have you ever avoided someone because they do not understand or approve of your monkey?

I could go on but you get the idea. So, How many yeses did you have?

Nice '59 stack!

I'm interested in your '59 Topps. I have multiple dupes and we could possibly help each other out.

It's nice to get some action on the side every now and then, but you always know where home is. Just don't neglect your #1. ;)

Just make sure your T206 Ball-and-Chain never finds out about your 1950's action - or you're in big trouble. :D

Now what do I do?

I'll give you $1 each for the 1949 Bowman stack and you'll already be making money off the deal!:D

chaddurbin 10-12-2012 05:19 PM

Jewish-collector 10-12-2012 09:04 PM

Paul,
I agree. Get them signed. What the hell. :D

Interested in the 56's... Please PM me a list of who you have. Also, any 51 Bowman's? Just thought I would check.

My thoughts exactly! What's the good of having baseball cards if you can't enjoy handling them (carefully, of course!)?

I think you should now trade for 26,000,000,000,000 1988 Donruss.

This will be the holy grail of your new mega giga peta-collection:

I have a few mid-grade (PSA 5-6, few 4s) 51 Bowman's I could part with. They're all graded. I made a brief attempt at collecting the set, but I have since moved on. As an issue/set, they're gorgeous cards. It also has the Mays and the Mic rookies, both of which will never, ever go out of style. Let me know if you're interested in the cards, and I'll send you a list/prices.

Just hope you don't get the bug like I have for 50-60's football cards too, they're generally cheaper, but just as addictive

T206Collector 10-26-2012 12:16 PM

So I finally got them yesterday, and spent most of the evening beginning to sort them and catalog them. I am sure to have a lot of questions, but I'll try to post them on matter-specific threads in the near future.

Now, remember, these cards will not accept a "soaking" like a T206 does.

T206Collector 10-26-2012 02:11 PM

Ha ... fortunately no back damage to soak off!
