Happy Birthday- Ty Cobb & Ronald Acuna, Jr.

Strange mix for this date.

...and 'Moose' Skowron,

'65 A.L. MVP Zoilo Versalles

and

former #1 Prospect Byron Buxton

Whenever I think which MVP had the weakest stats compared to players from other years, it's always Zoilo in 1965. Didn't mean to spoil his birthday, just an observation.

You're right Barry...Versalles's stats are far from the norm for a league MVP.

However, 1965 was a very down year for American League hitters:

Oliva led the league with a .321 BA and only two others hit .300

Tony C. lead in HRs with 32.

Rocky Colavito led in RBI with 108.

Versalles - .273 - 19 - 77

He was second in SB (Campaneris) and Hits (Oliva)

He led in WAR for position players, Runs, Doubles, Triples

(and PA, AB, & Ks)

and won the Gold Glove at a vital defensive position.

His second half splits were .303/.349/.500

He hit .353 in August & .337 in September.

I know Series play isn't considered, but he did well there - .286/.333/.500

Once again, these are not the numbers of a 'normal' year MVP, but he, IMO, was clearly the best in the league that year. He received 19 of 20 votes.
