Surprisingly long history of Traded cards

I had a lot of fun writing this article. I'm wondering if the N54 members here have any other sets/cards to nominate for inclusion.

Thanks so much!
Jason

Haven't read it yet, but just discovered your site. Wow...can tell you I will be spending a lot of time there.

Good stuff!!!!
Not only Nolan Ryan, as you mentioned, but I have always been crushed that Topps didn't put a 'Willie Mays Traded to my Mets' high number card in the '72 set. What an opportunity lost.

jason.1969 01-02-2019 06:04 PM

You are so right about Mays! I'm going to add that one to the section as another one that might have been.

I really enjoyed your article and can see you had fun writing this! There's something about traded cards that have always attracted my attention as well. I think its some simple pleasure that we derive as kids playing games like "spot the difference" and things like that. Here are a few more for your consideration.

-1933 Eclipse Import Glenn Myatt - pictured with the Athletics and then with a lazy transfer to the Indians (lets just throw "Cleveland" on his uniform and call it a day)

-1947-66 Exhibits Herb Score - pictured as an Indian, and then with cap emblem removed, no doubt to commemorate his move to Chicago

-1956 Big League Star Statues Larry Doby - pictured as an Indian on both, but the team has switched from Cleveland to Chicago. At least this one contains some extra text regarding the trade.

Also, with regard to your Orestes Minoso example, I have always considered both cards to depict him with the White Sox, with the "C" cap just being an alternate/different year cap for the team.

Would it be alright with you if I added your cards? I probably won't use Score since I used Minoso from same issue but the others are totally new to me.

Great article, and MUCH more in depth that I anticipated!

Do you consider the 1959 Cards that have variations w/ and w/o traded (or Optioned) statements traded cards?

321 - Bob Giallombardo (Optioned Statement)
322 - Harry Hanebrink (Trade Statement)
336 - Billy Loes (Trade Statement)
362 - Dolan Nichols (Optioned Statement)

jason.1969 01-04-2019 09:51 AM

The traded/optioned stuff on the back of cards happened in 1966 and 1967, too.

I'll take it if you know a card offhand. If not I can enjoy the search.

Guys, thanks to the trail you put me on I also found the "traded line" style variations actually pre-date Topps and were part of the 1955 Bowman set! Just one player, but here it is...

Attachment 339585

jason.1969 01-04-2019 07:15 PM

And 1954 Bowman Vic Raschi and Dave Philley

And holy smokes, Topps takes it all the way back to 1951!

BTW, the article has been revised significantly thanks to all these additions. Link re-posted here in case you're interested in the latest...

If you have to add all of the suggestions so far, the length of your story is going to make "War and Peace" look like only a pamphlet. :D

T206 has Lundgren with both Chicago and Kansas City. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5456e3c371.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e011fcf1de.jpg

Thanks. I'm generally just showing one example per set and I already had Dahlen for T206. I'm guessing from your sig line that those Lundgrens are your actual cards...DAMN!! That Chicago one is gorgeous!

You have a knack for questions that guys can't Google or go find at Baseball Reference. Keep them coming!
