Rationale for your username

I've seen quite a few interesting usernames on this site over the years and some I haven't been able to figure out.

Two things triggered my desire to start this thread:

(1) during the inaugural Net54 '54 Topps set break webcast, Nick said usernames when declaring the winners of each card, but said "Derek" for my two wins

(2) the recent passing of Anthony resulted in me looking up DB Cooper on Google and learning about events/people that happened/existed before I came into this world. Anthony's use of DB Cooper as his username and the significance of it was completely foreign to me, but probably not to those of you who were alive during the time.

Perhaps you have a story to tell too?

Unfortunately, mine is pretty boring, but maybe you were wondering what in the world h2oya311 stands for. Quite simply, I was a swimmer at Georgetown University back in the late '90s. H2o = water, Georgetown = hoyas ; combine them and there you have it. ...oh and my bday is 3/11. No, I'm not a die-hard 311 fan, although I love the song "Amber", and no, I'm not a member of the kkk (3x 11th letter in the alphabet), or the gang from Las Vegas.

And if you ever asked yourself: "what is a Hoya?", you've simply answered your own question.

We just had a thread for this and our Avatars in August:

I always use my real name on the internet as it's a minor pet peeve of mine to see anonymous ramblings from behind a keyboard. But to each their own. I guess I should come up with some cool user id and still have my name in my signature line. Maybe later....

h2oya311 10-08-2014 08:10 AM

Thanks Andy - I completely missed that thread...I thought I was coming up with something original when apparently I was a few months late to the game.

There are still MANY out there who have not yet shared. I am very interested...

jimivintage 10-08-2014 08:15 AM

Not too hard to figure mine out! :)

jimi = my name
vintage = my love for vintage cards

My pic stems from when I collected the T206 McGraw back run....so I should probably change that one of these days. ;)

.....and for what it's worth, I missed that thread on avatars, too, Derek!

rjackson44 10-08-2014 08:16 AM

reggie Jackson my idol :)

bigtrain 10-08-2014 08:31 AM

Obviously, for "The Big Train", Walter Johnson.

darkhorse9 10-08-2014 08:50 AM

Mine is completely non-collecting related. It's Beatle related. Darkhorse was George Harrison's record label and #9 is John Lennon a nod to John Lennon.

gregr2 10-08-2014 08:54 AM

Mine is pretty easy too!!

Clever. A Hoya is also a plant. Hoya Sulawesii. People collect those too.

The Nasty Nati 10-08-2014 09:11 AM

Nothing crazy, "Nasty Nati" is a nickname for Cincinnati, and I grew up there.

savedfrommyspokes 10-08-2014 09:20 AM

My handle is derived from the fact that I am both an avid cyclist as well as an avid collector of cards form the era (1950s-60s) that was likely the most popular era to have had kids put cards into their bicycle spokes. You will find no cards in any of my spokes though.

moeson 10-08-2014 09:23 AM

A tribute to my late dad who was generous with both time and money in supporting my passion for the hobby.

glynparson 10-08-2014 09:28 AM

It's my name

:)

Bestdj777 10-08-2014 09:29 AM

Someone hacked my eBay account many years ago and changed my username to "Bestdj777." I am not a DJ, and, if I was, I probably wouldn't the best. But, I wanted to keep my Net54 username consistent.

sycks22 10-08-2014 09:47 AM

Last name / number in baseball

Econteachert205 10-08-2014 09:50 AM

I teach economics (and history) and love t205's

campyfan39 10-08-2014 09:52 AM

Yours is one of my favorites!
Mine is pretty self explanatory. I love Campy for overcoming the struggles in his life, both before and after the accident.
Great thread.

Except for the fact that most of us also make our real names visible (as requested by the Grand Poo-Bah of this forum) for all to see, in which case an anonymous screen name is hardly anonymous. ;)

As far as why I chose the screen ID "Auggiedoggy" is concerned? I created the name (READ: ripped off from an old cartoon TV series) when I bought my first puppy, a Norwegian Elkhound. I wanted a canine-related screen ID so I went with a blast from the past - my past. Hence the name Auggiedoggy. The avatar is slightly confusing to those too young to remember the cartoon. The small dog is actually Auggie. The larger dog is his father, Doggie Daddy. My second reason for choosing this ID was that I wanted something mature and dignified. Something that reflected my true character.

Myachelydra 10-08-2014 10:14 AM

Mya is the genus name of the soft-shelled clam which was my wife's thesis topic

Chelydra is the genus name for the snapping turtle which was one of my research animals

VoodooChild 10-08-2014 10:23 AM

Hey Derek, I was a swimmer too. That is actually where my User ID comes from. My coach gave me the nickname Voodoo Child (eventually became just Voodoo) when I was 12. He said the lyrics of the Hendrix song "I stand up next to a mountain and I chop it down with the edge of my hand" reminded him of the way I swam. Unfortunately, that was the age of my last growth spurt and my swimming career burned out in High School. It did lead to life-long appreciation of Hendrix's music though which is why I still continue to use it online.

Mine's pretty obvious :)

Gmrson 10-08-2014 10:43 AM

Mine is my NTN trivia handle for the last 18 years. It's a character from the E. M. Forster book A Room With A View, George Emerson (G M R SON).

tschock 10-08-2014 10:53 AM

Mine? Pretty simple and very unimaginative.

icollectDCsports 10-08-2014 11:01 AM

icollectDCsports = I collect sports memorabilia related to the Washington, DC sports teams. (Although my collecting interests aren't limited to those teams.)

bbcard1 10-08-2014 11:13 AM

I think you can figure it out. Its the handle I use on all my social media...

Mighty Casey 10-08-2014 11:21 AM

Pretty easy to solve. Mighty Casey = My tribute to early baseball. 1888 poem featuring Casey (Mike "King" Kelly) and the Mudville Nine.

ZernialFan 10-08-2014 11:31 AM

Obvious...............but Gus Zernial was my favorite player growing up outside Philly in the early '50's. You couldn't find another A's fan as everyone was a Phillies fan!

cubsfan-budman 10-08-2014 11:37 AM

I am a cubsfan. I also drink miller lite.

veleno45 10-08-2014 11:43 AM

Mine is my street name. Thug life.

(kidding of course)

BicycleSpokes 10-08-2014 11:44 AM

Due to budget constraints, I collect vintage cards in low grade, hence I thought my username was fitting...

brian1961 10-08-2014 11:45 AM

Mine's easy---first name followed by the year I began collecting baseball cards. I was a few months shy of turning 7. ---Brian Powell

mrvster 10-08-2014 11:52 AM

Centauri 10-08-2014 11:52 AM

I took mine from a character in the movie Last Starfighter - a favorite of mine as a kid. Also, I post on several internet sites, and the name is not common.

LOVED that movie as a kid!!

chipperhank44 10-08-2014 12:02 PM

Back in the early days of the internet, I needed a screen name for AOL instant messenger. In all my 13 year old wisdom, I picked my two favorite baseball players (Chipper Jones and Hank Aaron) and combined their names. To follow the popular form, at least among my friends, I needed a number on the end. Hank Aaron's 44 was the natural choice.

emmygirl 10-08-2014 12:13 PM

Mine is in remembrience of a beautiful Springer Spanial I had as a pet for many wonderful years. Her name was Emmy but I called her Emmygirl. Still miss her.

I Only Smoke 4 the Cards 10-08-2014 12:45 PM

I summoned my inner hipster for mine and went with something ironic. Also, I imagined kids thinking "when I grow up I want to smoke so I can get those cool cards.:

deucetwins 10-08-2014 01:00 PM

Mine is a play on words. I have twin boys. In no way is it related to the team from MN. My avatar is Ban Johnson Field in Hot Springs, AR. Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Mel Ott, and others had spring training there.

t206blogcom 10-08-2014 01:25 PM

Mine is pretty easy to figure out. It's the url for where I posted my T206 pics, why and how I got into collecting, etc. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to finish putting up the scans.

Alex,
I don't smoke, but since I joined here, your username has always made me wish I could travel back in time, just so I could chain smoke Uzits, Drums, and Broad Leafs.

39special 10-08-2014 01:42 PM

My street rod is a '39 Buick Special

Northviewcats 10-08-2014 02:09 PM

user name

Mine is the same as my eBay user name. When I set up my eBay account 12 years ago I didn't expect to do much business on the site, so I just chose the name of the high school where I worked so I could bid on a few cards.

Even though I retired this year I would never change it now. The name and the school have been very good to me.

Best regards,

Joe

Rich Klein 10-08-2014 02:31 PM

Because I tend to post on controversial subjects, I decided my real name was sufficient -- that has to do with the board before this board

On other boards I tend to be Sabrgeek -- Society of American Baseball Research -- Geek *self explanatory*

On the Beckett Boards I'm Rich K --- that was the name I chose in 1996 and I don't remember if I even had my AOL account then

darwinbulldog 10-08-2014 02:46 PM

I've taken mine from 19th century evolutionary biologist Thomas Huxley's nickname. Evolution is my academic area.

Jobu 10-08-2014 02:57 PM

It is very bad to steal my rum.....it is VERY bad.

JollyElm 10-08-2014 03:02 PM

Since I was a kid, no one has ever called me Darren. It's always been Elm or Elms, which is short for Elmo, a nickname I acquired for no rational reason whatsoever. Jolly Elm is a play on the Jimmy Buffett song, "Jolly Mon."

cardsfan73 10-08-2014 03:28 PM

I am a Cadinals fan and I was born in 73... not very original I know :)
