1933 Goudey #106 Napoleon Lajoie "SGC 10" (fake)
 

1933 Goudey #106 Napoleon Lajoie was actually not issued with the regular set. Of course imagine the panic in the collecting world as nobody could find #106! Outraged collectors had to write a letter to Goudey to obtain the card, and #106 was produced with a 1934 front and a 1933 back. The Standard Catalog says the NM value of this card is $40,000! Reprints are readily available on eBay for a couple of bucks. I'm about 80% finished with my 1933 Goudey set, and of course I will never obtain this card, and a reprint card is in place.

I purchased an SGC slabbed 1933 Goudey #19 Bill Dickey, and as is my practice, I cracked the card out of the slab. My storage space is limited, and slabs just take up to much room. As I was cleaning off my work bench, my mind wandered to my Lajoie reprint card. So with a little sandpaper, a little creasing, and a soak in some leftover coffee, the transformation was complete. I matched up the font on the "flip", printed out the new information, and "updated" the "flip". Super glue was used to "sonically-seal" the card.

Personally, I wound not encourage the practice of putting fake cards and flips into real slabs and resealing them, regardless of how bad the finished result looks.

I think you needed just a little more Super Glue.;)

To balance out the negativity I will say I think it is cool. I have made a ton of stuff like this. You need some more practice resealing the slab though.:) I would also recommend changing the flip to remove the SGC. I like to make the flip so it can not be mistaken for a real one. I usually also make the back of the flip read "This is a novelty item".

Now that's a good question. Have fun with your cards? Be careful out there? I just kind of enjoy looking at this card each morning.

Only once did I reuse a slab. A local card dealer was completely sold on PSA security. He insisted it was impossible to crack a slab without destroying it. So I cracked a t212, inserted a smaller version of his business card and resealed it. You should have seen his face when I presented this Obak to him. For months he kept it on display next to his counter top register and showed it to his customers with a warning to not over-rely on the slab and flip. Nice to get one convert!

I think there are a lot of folks who fill unobtainable voids in their sets like this. It's one reason why a guy can sell a bad, but reasonable looking aged reprint on ebay for $40. My opinion is that not many think that they are getting a super rare card cheap, just an affordable set filler or novelty piece. If your intentions are self serving and to keep in your personal collection - have fun. I had a similar aged reprint that filled my T207 Ward Miller for years. Time to do crafts disappears after kids and cows though so just empty slots in the sheets of my binder now.

Eric encouraged my post if my intentions are to keep this "novelty" item in my collection, and of course I never had any other thoughts other than to just enjoy it myself when I sit down at my desk. And I think the term "novelty" well describes this card. Plus I am retired and have plenty of time for "arts and crafts" LOL!

I never really thought about Bens technique of somehow ensuring that this would never be mistaken for a legit card. I guess I assumed the 100% frosted edges, glue covered front, and the hole on the back of the slab would serve this purpose. But I see and agree with this point.

I am going to "re-holder" this card as soon as another slab becomes available and make sure there is no question this card is a reprint, it won't detract from me enjoying the card.

Plus next time I won't use so much super-glue.
