Red Man

Finished my 52-55 Red Man Dodgers team sets today with the addition of the graded Campy. Took me a while to complete this, just chipped away one by one. I’d like to upgrade the 54 PeeWee but otherwise I’m pleased with the overall condition. The main thing I was a stickler about was that they all needed to have the original tab intact on bottom. Examples can be found with the tabs cut off.

Red Man

Does anyone have any images of Red Man advertisements or original packaging from their collections they can share?

That was one of the easiest issues for me to complete for my Cubs collection. There are only two Cubs in all of the Red Man sets, 1953 Warren Hacker and 1953 Hank Sauer. I think I still need a Hank Sauer with the date variation, I didn't know there were variations until I read it here a few years ago.

Uh oh. Earmuffs. I don’t want to know about variations lol.

I don't know about other years, but all 1953 Red Man cards have a variation of March 31 or May 31.

That’s five more cards I need Cliff, five more! Thanks a lot! Lol

I'm going to ruin your whole weekend, according to COMC every set from 1952 through 1955 Red Man has two date variations. 1952 is March 31, 1953 / June 1, 1953. 1953 is March 31, 1954 / May 31, 1954. 1954 is March 31, 1955 / May 31, 1955. 1955 is April 15, 1956 / June 15, 1956. I don’t know if every card is affected. I wonder why Red Man did it every year?

I stopped worrying about those variations years ago, Lol
Focusing on NOW; CONGRATULATIONS on a beautiful, clean set of very pretty cards!!!

Collecting those who were the first black players to play for one of the MLB teams (or the first black catcher to play in MLB), I think I am missing two cards: The 1954 Minoso and the 1955 Doby.

Can anyone explain why Mickey Mantle never appeared in any Ted Man set?

Thanks, Phil. I appreciate the perspective calibration.

Does anyone have an explanation or theory why every Red Man set has two different deadline dates? It has me stumped . My only guess is the early one was for the eastern half of the US and the later one was for the western half of the US, but there were no teams in the western half of the US at that time.

Congrats on the set Joe, but neither ear muffs or an Apostle can absolve you of the need for both variations of any Dodger :)

It is actually nothing more than contractual. Bowman got the jump on Topps in '51 and landed Mickey exclusively. Topps didn't even approach Mays--according to Willie. In '52 both players signed with Topps and Bowman (Mays also signed with Red Man and was given an all new, electric toaster oven!)
Frankly, Mickey Mantle was oblivious to the fierce rivalry between the card companies. In July of '53, Bowman signed Mickey Mantle for some appliances and a cash bonus to be exclusively in their set. They repeated this in '54.
In early '56, Topps bought Bowman and the rest is history.
Interestingly, Sports Illustrated printed a "Topps-Looking" Mantle in 1954 in black and white. They were careful to change it up a bit.
Here's the '54 from Banty Red's "The Mantle Set". It comes in a green back and a blue back.
I think I might make that Sports Illustrated card on vintage stock and hand color it. That might look cool.

Thank you so much! The reverses in The Mantle Set look like this...

Hilarious. Meanwhile, my quest for a REALLY nice '53 Joe Black continues. I love that card. Red Man cards are just beautiful.
