November Pickups

2 Attachment(s)
Sorry for jumping the gun, I just wanted to rain on the Red Sox parade with a Yankees item to start off the month (a day early, apologies - also it hasn't arrived yet, so technically it will be a Nov. pickup).

I was unaware Gehrig was on the '23 Series roster, yet he did not play. The card is scored for Game 2. 2 Ruth Home Runs.

Another Koufax

2 Attachment(s)
The Koufax is signed by Walter Looss on the back, it is 11" x 17" and is a type 1.
The Clemente is an Emmons.

When I was 8 I had a poster with the artwork so I had to have the pin:

1955 Bill and Bob PC. Is it signed? Damned if I know. As a PC it was a great deal, so I bought it. If the autograph is good, that's just icing on the cake. Anyone who knows the signature, please chime in.

Although I already own these ticket stubs I could not resist purchasing this lot on eBay yesterday. The lot included a scored Game One Baltimore program, a scorecard, and tickets to all four games played in Baltimore. The tickets are all for same seat. On the back of each ticket the original owner(s?) wrote the line score, pitchers, homers, attendance, and the weather. There are also names written that I don’t recognize: Richard Phillips, Henry Jacobs, and Kenny Benner (games 6 and 7). Perhaps these are the names of the people who used the seat? Thankfully this writing served to keep the price down to an affordable $50.00. Nonetheless, I really love the story these stubs tell. I have never really enjoyed full unused tickets. In my opinion unused tickets document history but failed to witness it. Although much more valuable than a stub, a mint unused ticket to game seven of the 1971 series must be a terribly sad thing to behold:rolleyes:

GrayGhost 11-05-2013 06:16 AM

In agreement w you. Cool story and lot for sure.

bgar3 11-05-2013 06:48 AM

it might be possible richard phillips is richie phillips the umpire's union lawyer. he did not start that until 1978, but was involved in sports in the early 70's. i believe he was from the philadelphia area.

I picked this tie up last week. My understanding is that Iron City Beer was one of the sponsors of the 1971 Pirates. Members of the 1971 World Series team and front office staff were presented with these commemorative ties. This one came from Bob Moose’s estate. The only other one I have seen is on display at PNC.

Circa 1924, only one I've ever seen other than Dr. Mark Cooper's. Sorry for the grainy pic, it is SPECTACULAR in hand!!!

Fantastic pick-up, Greg -- where'd you find it?
More pictures, pleeeeeease...

I'll post some hi-res pictures over the weekend. It is a gorgeous piece.

Hot Springs Bathers 11-12-2013 06:10 PM

I know Dr. Mark Cooper sold many games a few years ago I believe through Heritage but does anyone know if he still collects and has that great collection?

They just sold a bunch more of his stuff about a week ago. I know because I was under-bidder on a couple of nice ones (and now have a tinge of remorse).

Hot Springs Bathers 11-13-2013 06:40 AM

Thanks Greg, wonderful piece! I wonder who came away with his copy of Cliff Van Beek's The National Pastime, the forerunner to APBA?

I lost a bidding war to Mark for that copy about 7-8 years ago.

Butch7999 11-14-2013 11:11 AM

Greg, actually the most and best of Mark's collection was auctioned at Heritage just this (2013) spring and summer,
with many more highlights of his collection having been available in the Heritage auction of the week just past:
http://sports.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=7085&lotNo=82006 (lots 82006 through 82042).

Mike, if you're referring to the sample of National Pastime that sold on eBay in May 2005,
Mark wasn't the winner on that one. We know who was, but it's not up to us to say who (sure as heck wasn't us!).

Oh OK, I knew they had the collection as a whole and were asking $795,000 for it in its entirety (I spoke with Mark when he consigned it) but didn't know it went in this past auction. I know the Gehrig game I got was his (being it was in the box and all).

If you EVER know of anyone that wants to part with a Zimmer game (you know, the high end one :D) please keep me in mind!!! I am a serious buyer.

Greg

Hot Springs Bathers 11-14-2013 01:17 PM

Butch in around 2005 there was a rough but complete National Pastime that was listed on eBay.

My final bid was $545.00 which seems silly now but it was all I had, I was sniped in the end. I contacted the winner who was in fact Mark Cooper. The game parts were very rough but the cards appeared to be pretty nice.

I printed and saved all the photos from the auction. This was before the reprints were issued. By the way the latest issue of Memories & Dreams, the bi-monthly magazine of the Baseball Hall of Fame has a photo of a complete game including the AL & NL card boxes.
