Collins McCarthy v. Sporting News

Posted By: Paul
Which are tougher: cards from E135 or cards from M101-4/5?

I guess I should clarify that I'm really only interested in the fronts, so "E135" includes not just cards with Collins McCarthy backs, but also cards with Standard Biscuit backs, Boston Store backs, Weil Baking backs, etc., even though they are technically not E135s. And "M101-4/5" includes all the backs as well.

I had always assumed they are roughly equal in scarcity, but I haven't tracked them closely and would be interested to hear everyone else's experience.

Posted By: Richard
I would say that grouped as a whole, e135 is considerably scarcer than m101-4/5. However, if split up by backs, both issues have incredibly rare versions.

The easiest m101 back (blank) would be at least an order of magnitude easier than the easiest e135 back (close between collins and boston store). Blank backed m101 is probably almost an order of magnitude easier than the easiest m101 ad back as well.

Just my experience. Would be interested to hear from others with much more experience.

Posted By: leon
I agree with Richard on this one. Just casual observations on ebay show quite a few M101-4/5's but the E135's are much less seen. Besides a weird back or two on E135's, the M101's do have some back rarities that are tougher than E135's....as well as a few singles rarities ...(please Jay ...just once more.....pull the Thorpe out)..... I do think the Boston Store E135's are seen a litte more than the Collins backed ones, but that's debatable.....regards

Posted By: jay behrens
per Leon's request, my m101-5 Thorpe with a Famous & Barr back, For whatever reason, the Thorpe card seems to be very difficult to find. I only saw it a few times in the 80s at prices I was unwilling to pay. I got this one about 3 years ago from a kind board member. Since my return to the hobby in 2001, I have only seen one other m101-5 Thorpe, that was in a MAstro auction about the same time I purchased mine and it was grade SGC 40.

I'm willing to guess that for those working on the set, Thorpe has to be on more wantlists than any other card. Ruth may be more expensive, but you see at one in every major auction.

Jay

A good friend will come bail you out of jail. Posted By: dd
I'd guestimate there are 2 or 3 M101-4/5's for every E135.
