Jay's Publishing

1 Attachment(s)
I always see listed Jay Publishing Picture Pack Photos Type 1 (1958-1961) and Type 2 ( 1962-65). What about the sets before 1958, are they Jay's Publishing or Not ? Like the 1957 Detroit Tigers ( Scan of Kaline enclosed). They have the "Detroit Tigers" on the front, not just "Tigers" like the Stadium Team Sets. Any Jay Publishing expert out there ?? Thanks

Jay Publishing sets

I have Jay sets for the Phillies starting in 1956 going through the mid 60's.

Jay’s Publishing

I’m sure no expert, but I’m a fan of both the team issue packs and the Jay Publishing. I think the grading companies, at least PSA, state that the Jay issues started in 1958 and like you stated above group them as 1958-1961. I believe, in the past, they have slabbed at least some 1957’s, but am unsure of the 1956 version. So, at least for some teams the Jays go back to 1956 which would make the Jay packs 1956 to 1965, but not for all teams.

It appears the checklists and Standard Catalogs need to update and include 1956-61 as type 1, and 1962-65 as Type 2. All other team sets after 1965 are not Jay Publishing Sets.

As previously stated, Jay Publishing released sets beginning in 1956 and ending in 1965 (with the death of the publisher). Other companies, such as Sport Service (which is the generic name of a company based in Connecticut that sold picture packs through the mail) and Danny Goodman (who ran the souvenir stands in Dodger Stadium) also released photo/picture packs. Goodman released the Dodgers team sets that included the facsimile signatures at the bottom. I’ve seen Goodman Dodgers team sets released well into the 1980s.

I thought I saw a note Jay's widow just passed on recently. Not that she produced any items but she outlived Jay by more than 50 years.

Wow. Did she remarry?

Here you go --she passed in October
