1946 American Card Catalog Gem

I recently won copies of the 1946 and 1953 editions of the American Card Catalog. Jefferson Burdick and I grew up in the same small town and I figured these would be fun additions.

1953 is orange and 1946 is blue

Flipping through the 1946 edition, this popped out!

Look at the pricing of T206 cards… $0.04 a card!

The appendix lists Southern Leaguers at $0.20, the Plank at $10 and the Wagner at $25

What sticks out is the set is listed at 522 cards. When were the Magie and Doyle errors discovered? I remember Dan McKee telling me a story some years back at Chantilly about a Doyle card but I can’t remember.

The 1953 edition lists cards at $0.05 per card, the Plank at $10, and the Wagner at $50. Some individual cards are also called out in the appendix with raised prices. Also note that the Ty Cobb back is listed here but not in 1946!

What is a "Hustler" back in the T206 ?

Hustler was long believed to be a rare T206 back, but I don't think anyone today believes they ever actually existed. The Hustler advertising was used for non-baseball subjects.

Yeah Hustler T206 was essentially an Urban Legend for 50+ years. They are an uncommon T59 Flags of All Nation brand but never confirmed on any T206 (obviously)

The Slow Joe Doyle error was discovered by Larry Fritsch in 1980. I want to say that the Magee error wasn't catalogued until 1950, though I'll double check Bray's Checklist on that.

This is a Walt Corson index card list from the 1950s-60s. I believe this might be exactly where this myth started. As most know, Corson was one of the big, all time great collectors, back in the day.

I wonder how frustrated he was trying to find a Hustler or Ty Cobb Back.

All I know is his collection at the Met is in really good shape. I don’t have pics of the cracker jacks on display there

Quite frustrated, I am sure.
For some interesting, and informative, hobby reading here is a great thread concerning him. Seems he was back with Burdick in the 1940s, helping with the ACC and other hobby things.
