E 90-1 The Caramel Monster
 

I’m the wrong guy to try and compile and record the progress of anyone’s set since I can barely be counted on to count my own...

But I found myself making good progress on the Caramel Monster. Very little recent postings can be found on this site, but there are a few excellent older posts describing the “Toughies” and pop reports etc.

Anyway after a couple good transactions with Brian McQ and Cory W, I find myself at 76.

I have a lot of the HOFERS and TOUGHIES, so these 76 aren’t just the easiest ones. Past threads have indicated that most collectors stall about 90-100 cards, seems like there are 120 (not without debate, since they are unnumbered :D)

In this set, the acquisition of any individual card is not equal...getting a low grade Joe Jackson will cost you Cadillac money. Getting a low grade Stanage will cost you two “Cappuccino and Scones” money. Finding the Mitchell and Sweeney cards would be a needle in a haystack and cost a bunch!

Who wants to weigh in on a weighting system?
Who wants to keep track of the group’s Caramel Monster Number?

The Gibson Back View is tough.

The E90-1 set is one of my favorite pre-war card sets, in my opinion it is more colorful and has more interesting poses than the T206 set. I think a weighing system would be great, although very time consuming. If we did a population count for some of the cards I think we would find quite a few cards are rarer/commoner than we thought before. A monster number thread would be fun too, but I have no idea how many E90-1 collectors we have on the board.

There is a reasonable Joss throwing/horizontal, always a tough E90-1 card to find in any shape, on LTGA. Don't know if you have one or not but worth a look. The Mitchell is doable. Several around in recent months either on Ebay or AH's. about $2.000 for a graded vg. Good luck on a tough but fascinating set.

Great idea - I'm at 53 with little effort. I am working towards a set but very passively at this point. I got to about 60 simply buying cards when I could within the price I wanted and have some of the tougher commons/HOFs.

I think a 'wall' might come a little earlier than 100. I've probably seen about 30 others that I could have had with a little more money. The others are out there but harder to find. I guess it depends what the definition of 'wall' is.

i love this set after buying the Mitchell years ago and a handful of others in a clean Sweep Auction that i thought were really cool and reasonable (love the Speaker!). but can't decide if i want to take the plunge on starting to think about the whole set, as the market is so heated now and i know the big ones are going to cost... waiting. maybe if get a large group lot.

I started earlier this year and love it so far. I’m only at about 35 and they’re probably the easiest ones. I need to do more research on easy vs. hard so if you have the old thread handy I’d appreciate the link!

Seems like the Lax would be a deal breaker, so pricey and the lipstick pose and all...seems tough. How many e90 Jax are there?

Ok, I'm game. I have always wanted to imitate/compete/improve upon Frank and his Monster. I have been on and contributed to this board since it was created, and was on the old Full Count board before that, so I definitely have the hobby stamina required to maintain such a thread, just like Frank has. I have always loved the E90-1 set, and have collected it off and on for over 25 years. Of course since the E90-1 set has nowhere near the popularity of the T206 set, the views will pale in comparison to the Monster thread, but I think the E90-1 issue has enough of following and is full of varying scarcities that are still being determined that I think it will at least keep a portion of the Net54'ers interested.

Of course if I do this I want to name the thread, which would be "E90-1, The Kraken (AKA the E-Monster). And I will establish the point system, which will be a little more enlarged and elaborate than the T206 Monster version (I mean, all Ty Cobb cards count as 1 point...ouch!). Admittedly, Frank's simple formula has widespread appeal, but why not try something different for this very different and much smaller set? Here is the point system I propose for the 121 E90-1 cards (with the recently cataloged Miller w/sunset increasing the complete set up from 120 cards)

I have given point values based mainly on popularity with a good dose of perceived scarcity thrown in, giving a nod to traditionally acknowledged scarcities and tossing in a few common players that have been revealed in the recent years as being tougher/more desirable. I decided to include the 14 commons worth 3 points each with the understanding that there are another dozen or so candidates that might be included, but didn't want this thing to get too cumbersome. Likewise various other Hall of Famers count as 1 point, but most of these are either pretty common or not as popular.

Let me know what you think about all this and what you think about my point system (as potential Kraken master I will listen to suggestions, but of course I get the final say like any good E-Monster would). If I get enough encouragement to proceed, I will start an official thread for folks to post their E-Monster score.

I'm building the set myself. The E90-1 has become my favorite pre-war set. I am at around 65 so far but I am fortunate to have most of the rarities of the set. (I need to update my list but last count was 65)
While the set has been cataloged at 120 cards for some time, it is now officially cataloged at 121. Beckett added the Miller sunset and no sunset about 3 years ago.

How does the Overall rate as a rarity?

Over all he is fairly scarce. :) And this is more times than I have posted in Franks Monster thread.... We should consider starting a fresh new thread for the caramel monster, but either way is fine by me. Not sure if I will do the set, ya' never know.

The Speaker has been a dream card for me for a long time. I don't think I've ever seen such a cool card.

i have not seen an e90-1 miller sunset or no sunset for sale in while.

I bought my sunset version last January on e-bay, I have seen it twice since, but the prices went too high for a card I already have.

i missed those...I'd love to upgrade. I'm not sure which version is tougher these days?

I think it is still tougher for the sunset for the E90-1, just like before, but I am no expert in E90-1s, I just dabble with the tougher ones, but only then in low grade. I am not after the set, but there are some that I think are really beautiful.

Ok my post was almost mentioned in a reply, so that is all the encouragement I need to start a new thread as stated in my post. I hope it will within a decade get 1000 views.

I don't have many regrets in the past 40 years that I've been collecting Sportscards as a grown-up. But, I do regret selling the E90-1 set (circa 2002).
I got lots of $$$$$ for it. But, in today's market, I would probably get that total amount just for the Joe Jackson (Ex condition) in that set.

Anyhow, I've started a 2nd set in recent years. Here are some of the stars in my 2nd set (and I have about 40 commons).

From my experience collecting the set over the last 20 years, I think you could make a good argument that both Miller variations are equally tough, just as Pete alluded to.
