Collegiate Football - A Proposal

What would you think of the following changes?

Eliminate the current conferences.

Use the English Premiere League as a model to create a stepladder of divisions.

The top 20 teams would be Division 1, 21-40 would be Division 2, etc.

Each year the top four teams in all divisions would move up to a higher division and the bottom four teams in each division would move to the neh(xt lower level.

During the regular season teams would only play teams in their own division.

Perhaps add one rivalry week for inter divisional games that would not count in the divisional standings.

Cupcake games would be eliminated, as would most 63-7 games between excellent teams and perienial conference doormats.

The top four or eight teams in Division 1 could participate in a 2 or 3 round elimination playoff to determine the national champion with a straight forward record based system to select who qualifies.

The current strong programs would likely survive in Division 1, but they would be obliged to play the whole season against tougher opponents.

The top teams in Division 2 might well have a better record (UCF perhaps), but would have to play the big boys in Division 1 the following year.

Teams in the lower divisions would be “forced” to play a schedule of competitive games, which could well be more appealing to their fan base.

I think the benefits of a system such as this outweigh the drawbacks, for how many are really going to miss the Alabama-Citadel and Ohio State-Rutgers matchups.

Just thinking outside the box, but I like this one.

I love the Premier League model. I wish they would do it in Baseball and Basketball as well. It might encourage the owners of the Twins to finally open the wallets.

We can't compete without a new stadium. I guess making the taxpayers pay for it makes them competitive. Except that they aren't. We, as fans, were told that they would spend more if they got a new stadium. That hasn't happened either. I hate the Pohlads.
