May Pickups

4 Attachment(s)
I thought I'd kick off May with an item I'm pretty excited about (technically purchased it last night, possibly before the clock struck May, but oh well...)

As some of you may know, I've been building a collection that chronicles Jackie Robinson's career, with particular focus on integration.

One of the things that I've always found interesting is the fact that long before 1947 and the Dodgers, Jackie played on integrated teams in college and the like.

On that note, I'm pretty excited about this pick-up. It's a full 10 years earlier than his joining the Dodgers and represents his first college experience. As was the case when Jackie was in high-school, his college teams were largely made up of white players.

The yearbook also has a signature from Mack Robinson, Jackie's brother, who won a silver metal in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

Sandy Koufax

Freshly back from the framer:
I recently took a professional color slide that was taken during Sandy Koufax's 18K game against the Cubs in April of 1962 and had a high quality photo made of it.
18K's was Sandy's career high in strikeouts, and he also struck out 18 in a game in LA in 1959.

My local framer did a great job of pairing it with a circa 1964 era Sandy Koufax signature that I have had for several years. Wall space is a real premium in my office at this point, but this photo definitely made the cut.

I love it! :)

Must be a great month for framers...not new pickups, but newly framed pieces. Very happy with how these turned out....apologies in advance for the sore necks!! I just can't figure out why they are right side up in my photos, but sideways when I upload them...

Saw that listing and thought it was pretty cool. Had I known $500 would do it I probably would have bought it myself. Nice pickup!.

Thankfully, listed as such. I doubt I would have figured it out on my own.

Francis Ouimet - a beautiful and rare matted and framed "Red Jacket" print of Francis Ouimet honoring him for being the first non Briton to be Captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in 1951. This is signed in the mat in green ink. I have researched this rare print as best as I can but there is not too much information available. One of the facts I could confirm was that Dwight D. Eisenhower painted the original that this print is based on. Ouimet won the U.S. Open in 1913. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. The print is 11x14 and framed this piece measures 16x20.

That is a very nice Ouimet. He was also employed by George Wright in his Boston store and given time off to play golf.

Purchased this snapshot (w/ Ted's signature on the reverse) of a young rookie Ted Williams taken at Payne Park in Sarasota, FL during Spring Training, either in 1938 or 1939 (lot came with a few other signed snapshots including Joe Vosmik which helped me date it).

thenavarro 05-14-2017 11:27 AM

Bought this one from a fellow board member and had it authenticated by Richard Simon. Beautiful, bold, huge autograph of a pretty decent pitcher. Will probably make a neat custom cut out of it or mat up with an old photo I have of him.

Weldon Henley signed 3 x 5 (Karl Wingler collection)

1 Attachment(s)
Wow, it's been quite a while since I have been able to scratch another real toughee off my no-hit pitcher autograph list.

I'm thrilled to have finally been able to find a really nice autographed example of early no-hit pitcher Weldon Henley thanks to net54 good guy Jim Stinson.
This vintage fountain pen signed 3 x 5 originated from the collection of Karl Wingler.

In game one of a double header on July 22, 1905 Philadelphia A's hurler Weldon Henley no-hit the St. Louis Browns 6-0.

Thanks for the assist, Jim!

Very cool to think it could be the oldest signed card known to exist.
Whether it is or not, it's still a great item! Congratulations on the pick up.

Picked up this very nice Ted Lyons signed and dated vintage baseball today. I believe the man he signed it for is a former mlb scout, possibly for the Phillies. Hence, the Giles NL ball.
