Because Neither my Wife Nor My Friends Care/Understand

So I am over-the-moon to have assembled the rare-back run in the picture below. It took time, tenacity, and a bunch of money, but now that I have the Brown OM and Brown Lenox, the BL 460 and BL350, a Drum and Uzit, and a blank back (not shown), I now have the ability to have every T206 back there is (lets assume Cobb back does not count). I doubt there are many people out there who have a Brown OM and a Brown Lenox, let alone a BL 460 and a Drum + Uzit. I think I deserve a parade! At worst, I think its very cool and would love the people closest to me to acknowledge this and understand what it means to me. But, of course, they dont care and think I am an idiot for spending so much time and money on cardboard pictures. And, thats why I love Net54 -- I can share with at least some people who will care and validate.

Ok card-collecting family, lets see something in your collection that you are very proud of, but that the people around you just dont understand or care about. And, Happy Thanksgiving!

KMayUSA6060 11-21-2017 09:58 AM

1) I'm unable to share anything as I'm preoccupied with picking my jaw up off the floor.

2) I don't want to share anything as, after seeing the OP, I am no longer proud of any aspect of my collection.

3) Happy Thanksgiving!

obcmac 11-21-2017 09:59 AM

Congratulations man...truly an impressive display.

bbcard1 11-21-2017 10:02 AM

Yet another reason Leon needs to figure out how to get a "Like" button on this site. Way to go.

"lets see something in your collection that you are very proud of, but that the people around you just dont understand or care about"

So, like, a baseball card?

Congrats on the rare backs though, that must have been hard to put together.

1. If a Cobb back exists, it does have to count. Sorry...
2. This is like a modern day rainbow of sorts, except with real cards. hahaha
3. Collecting cardboard is crazy, I don't think you're in idiot though...I love collecting cardboard, and if it makes you happy, that is important.
4. This collection is top notch. Great job buddy...I know you want this statement #1, but I had to hate first. hahahah
5. I think with any collection, if outsiders aren't involved, they will not understand it...

{IMG}Pretend I put the 2016 Topps Chrome Edwards Rainbow Here{Image} I won't pollute this thread with that modern mish mash. I don't even try to explain the colors and parallels to someone who don't collect...

trdcrdkid 11-21-2017 10:25 AM

Very impressive. I sometimes think I have a decent T206 back collection, but this puts into stark relief how far I have left to go -- I need brown OM, brown Lenox, BL 460, Drum, red Hindu, and Uzit. (Not to mention Ty Cobb.)

T206Collector 11-21-2017 10:26 AM

Your back run is EPIC and I am very proud of you!!! :D

Congratulations!!!

CW 11-21-2017 10:35 AM

Hey, all the cards in your photo are upside down.

Congrats! Awesome run of backs.

How about we have your parade on this Thursday? We might be able to get Macy's to sponsor it, too.

Certainly the Cobb back exists and therefore counts. It just doesn't count as a T206. At least in my opinion. I know that Jefferson Burdick would disagree, as would half of this board, but let's not derail a good thread. :)

DerekMichael 11-21-2017 10:53 AM

Congrats Ryan. That is a beautiful assortment and something which is extremely difficult to come by. I know you had to make a great effort to accomplish that and I salute you.

Thank you for sharing! ... We get it :)

Derek

Steve D 11-21-2017 10:57 AM

I'm impressed!

I hope to complete the run some day. I'm still missing BL, CB, Drum, Lenox and Uzit. Just haven't had the proper funds.

Steve

Sean 11-21-2017 11:04 AM

Ryan, great set. I have all but the Brown OM, and I doubt I'll ever get one. There's just too many other cards that I want. :o

Speaking of friends' responses, what I hate is getting a really important card (to me) and when I show it to my friends, all that they care about is "what's it worth?" I know that they don't know or care about cards, and that this is how people relate to the cards. But I wish that I could explain to them how I see the cards. It means nothing to me how much I paid for that Merkle Coupon Type-3 Factory 8 Overprint. The fact that this card means that I now have 18 different backs with Merkle (out of a possible 19) means everything. So as Ryan pointed out, I'm very happy to have this place to come and show off my cards and look at everyone else's cards.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone on Net54. :)

jcc6252 11-21-2017 11:15 AM

Rotchkiss, your run is truly worthy of commandeering the Circle in Downtown Indy, and parading around it with signs sporting all the different backs. Now, that would be fun, to hell with all the Turkey Trots, etc.

Northviewcats 11-21-2017 11:24 AM

Outstanding collection. Quite an achievement. Collecting a complete run of T206s backs is a project that seems attainable to the novice prewar collector, but soon becomes a monster after you start. At least it was for me. I'm happy to see that you slayed the beast. Congratulations.

Best regards,

Joe

Luke 11-21-2017 11:30 AM

Way to go Ryan! Happy for you!

jb67 11-21-2017 11:31 AM

Congrats an impressive run indeed. How long did it take from start to finish?

Rhotchkiss 11-21-2017 11:41 AM

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the kind words. A few things:

1. I 100% think i need the Cobb back for a complete Run (same with all three T213's, which i have, the T213-3 overprint, both T215 red crosses, and the T215 pirate, which I have); i think I want each back of a T206 front really. At worst, Cobb back, T213-1 (have) and T215-1. In time....
2. Doesn't take that long if you are willing to pay and you are tenacious at tracking stuff down; although I got really lucky on the Brown OM (thanks Johnny V!) and the Brown Lenox, which are the two real doozies.
3. I had a lot of help from many people who had eyes out for me -- Johnny, Sean C., Derek H., Michael S., Adam G, Luke L, etc. Its good to have friends and be lucky.
4. I still technically need a Sov 150 and an AB 350 no frame (in addition to Cobb and T215-1). I am trying to get a mid-high grade HOF front for all the backs (cant be a chooser on the BL 460, Drum, Brown Lenox and SLers for the OMs).
5 The fronts are:
Brown OM -- Sid Smith (SGC A)
Brown Lenox - Joe Lake, no ball (SGC 30)
BL 460 - Elberfield, fielding (PSA 1.5)
Drum -- Solly Hoffman (PSA 1)
Uzit -- Tinker bat off (SGC 84)
Lennox -- Chance, yellow portrait (PSA 4)
BL 350 -- Evers Yellow Sky (PSA 4.5)
Red Hindu -- Evers Yellow Sky (SGC 60)
Carolina Brights - Evers Yellow Sky (PSA 4)
Brown Hindu -- Lajoie, portrait (PSA 2)

6. Please post on your favorites that the world does not understand but us crazy Net54 people would love to see!

Sean 11-21-2017 12:11 PM

Ryan, you also need a T214 Victory, or maybe you have one and forgot to mention it?

Rhotchkiss 11-21-2017 12:39 PM

Nope, guess I need one of those too. But its least priority, since it has no tie to 1909-1911 (like a T213 or T215) and only has the T206 front; but yes, another one I need. Thanks Sean, good call.

clydepepper 11-21-2017 12:43 PM

Good Job!

Please don't get mad at me if I just say,

"What about the fronts?"

nice array of rarities...I was into rare backs in the early 90's...at which time I happened upon that drum hofman you now have. I picked it up at a show at the armory in silver spring, md. My heart was beating so fast when I asked to see it and turned it over to see what was hiding on the back...I was afraid to try to negotiate for a lower price...so I paid the full asking price of $38!

hangman62 11-21-2017 01:23 PM

nice grouping

Come on !
Is somebody gonna knock this guy.. its almost the Holidays

something ? anything ?... The corner wear is too much for me !, I prefer seeing larger scans ! Most of those are commons !...

Happy Holidays

PiratesWS1979 11-21-2017 01:56 PM

Very impressive Ryan! Those are some great cards and I'm sure we would all like to see the fronts, the more pics the better!

insidethewrapper 11-21-2017 02:36 PM

Great cards, too bad our significant others don't understand, but we still love them.

I know this must have been discussed a million times but "how many different backs are there in the T206 set ? Also is there a ranking from easiest to hardest ?

CW 11-21-2017 02:44 PM

Here's one resource, Mike:

http://t206resource.com/Back%20Rankings%20List.html

and another for comparison, but possibly not as accurate:

OK guys, the secret to getting your wife to appreciate your BB card addiction is simple. Make sure she, too, has a collecting addiction. My wife collects early 20th Century rare glassware
and pottery. She's gotten me interested in her kind of stuff. Hey, after all it is the same vintage as T206's. So, I have developed an appreciation for her hobbies, and she reciprocates by
her interest in my hobbies.

OK, since you requested....the following is my "Exclusive 12" run with Red HINDU backs. Perhaps, not as impressive as your back run; nevertheless, I'm proud of meeting this challenge
and succeeding.

Great job, Ryan!

I have gotten to 36 total backs (out of 39) two different times...Here's my most recent back run (which is mostly now dismantled).

Sean 11-22-2017 06:17 PM

Hey Mike, it's very cool to see them all together like that. :)

MVSNYC 11-22-2017 06:27 PM

Thanks Sean. Chris Browne helped create that image, he did that for several of us a few years back.

That's awesome, Michael. All the stuff you used to have.... Makes me never want to part with anything. I have seen those Chris Browne pics on this site before. I need to find someone to do that for me; maybe one of my kids??

Chris used to do some really neat gifs (I think that's what they're called). He did a great one of Leon's Mullaney overprint.

MVSNYC 11-22-2017 09:55 PM

Ryan, I don't have any regrets (well, maybe one or two ;))...but, I've been collecting for nearly 30 years, and what's kept my interest and passion fueled, is rotating the herd, keeping things fresh, buying, selling, trading, etc. I've always owned cool items, and I look at it like a rotating museum, if you will.

Our like buttons are posts such as this. :) Great looking back run and very difficult to obtain. Congrats Ryan!!

And no, our spouses and friends just don't think anything about cards like this either....while most of us revel in them.
