Help! New 1967 variation?

1 Attachment(s)
See attached picture. It is card # 403 Dick Nen and the 2nd "N" and his position are mostly missing very similar to the Ed Spezio (#128) printing error. I could not find a listing for, reference to or another example of the Nen. I checked it under a 20X loupe - What you see is how the card was printed. Anyone have any information or insight? Al? Bob? Dave? Anyone?

The Nen variant is pretty scarce

I got one in VG-EX on eBay a couple of years ago that was incorrectly listed as a 1963 Topps Error but still had to pay close to $100 to be the high bidder. I don’t think I’ve seen one since, very scarce. I saw a high grade one sell for $750 years ago on eBay. ETA, I think it’s related to the 1967 Topps Aurelio Monteagudo-Dick Howser missing border print errors, they were all on the same 5th Series sheet and are equally very scarce.

ALR-bishop 10-28-2022 08:33 PM

Yes those are tough too. Is the Schofield related as well ?

G1911 10-28-2022 08:43 PM

Been on my want list for awhile, they are tough to locate.

Yes, I should have noted the Schofield as part of the Monteagudo-Howser print error combo.

I can't believe I've never seen that one. I blame Al for not keeping me up to date.

The 5th series had 88 cards in it, so 8 different rows, printed 3x each, using the same print pattern throughout the sheet.

Schofield/Monteagudo/Howser were in columns 4, 5, & 6 in the print row headed by Bob Johnson. The card to the left of Schofield is Walker (448) and the card to the right of Howser is Lou Johnson (410).

Nen is in column 10 of a completely row. This row was headed by the 5th series checklist. Nen is sandwiched between Pete Ward (436) and Tiant (377). The card above him on the sheet in all 3 cases is Cards Rookies (384).

I doubt that the Nen error is related to the others but perhaps there is a Tiant, Ward, or Cards Rookies missing black error lurking to be discovered??

There goes Kev again. Clouding the issue with facts
:-)

Howard— looks like several people know about and want your card

hcv123 10-29-2022 02:47 PM

I knew I came to the right place!

Thanks for all the input guys! I am making an effort to get PSA to recognize and grade this as such. The card ultimately will be for sale but have a bit more due diligence to do on it first. Feel free to PM me if interested when it is available.

ALR-bishop 10-29-2022 04:07 PM

I think it is just another print defect, but a good one, and in earlier days the hobby did recognize the Spezio. Good luck Howard, we variant fans are rooting for you

I couldn't disagree more. Once a variation is officially recognized, the prices go up, up, up!!!!!!!! :D

ALR-bishop 10-30-2022 07:38 AM

I do not think we disagree Darren. Whether a variant is a “true” variation ( 55 Robinson ?) or a recurring print defect ( 61 Fairly ?), if it receives hobby recognition it’s value goes up and it is sought by a wider group of collectors. Since the Catalogs are gone the best way to boost a card value is recognition by PSA so it becomes needed by master collectors

PSA used to rely on the Catalogs, print or on line, to recognize variations. The road to hobby recognition is just a little more chaotic these days.

The Nen has already obtained a niche hobby following. Glad I got one early. If Howard can get PSA to recognize the Nen it will be sought after by master as well as niche collectors and the value will go up more.

I know you have a great assortment of tough variations/variants in your collection. If we have a difference in this area I am not sure what it involves

Rich Klein 10-30-2022 11:13 AM

I just went through the COMC grouping of all cards submitted and I have added the very difficult Nen variation. It's possible I missed one so please feel to send a Correction Request if I missed one.

Also, this is for Dave Hornish and all other Topps scholars -- why so many printing variations in this series (1967 5th)

Rich

Some of the same page variants mentioned by Cliff. There are a boatload of variations and recurring print defects in the 67 set

Elberson 10-30-2022 02:41 PM

Al……I’m taking notes lol

What’s the variation for marichal and de la hoz?

ALR-bishop 10-30-2022 02:50 PM

Marichal has some missing print in the first and 2nd line of the bio. It shows up on several variations lists. On De La Hoz it is the white tail coming off the sign

The set is loaded with similar recurring defects

Al, I was just having a bit of a laugh. Thought it was obvious. If the Nen is 'officially' recognized, then I sadly won't be able to afford it anymore, because prices will skyrocket. That's all.

I'm just an enthusiast but offer that Topps was pumping out a TON of different products in 1967 and quality control (such as it was) may have been wanting at certain points. That's a guess though, I'm not sure how much work was put into examining each press run once the proofs were agreed. A lot of these type variants seem to be the result of loose elements affecting image quality during the printing stage.

ALR-bishop 10-31-2022 10:52 AM

Darren— it probably was obvious to everyone but me:o. The older I get the slower I process. :)

Yours is the nicest one yet with the centering. I dug mine out, it's not as bad as I thought but the centering is brutal.

G1911 11-05-2022 03:39 PM

There's also a Marichal where the obscuring of "list" is a different pattern. There's at least 4 versions for him.

That was my card. Where did you find this image?

Kevvyg1026 11-06-2022 08:24 AM

1967 Marichal

most likely ebay.

ALR-bishop 11-06-2022 09:45 AM

A few on ebay now. All at bargain prices

Promethius88 11-06-2022 10:55 PM

My Nen will be hitting Ebay this week! Not sure what to expect, guess we'll see!

I'm shocked it didn’t go for more, if I didn't already have one I would have at least driven the high bid up some trying to win it.

I'm looking to see a '67 5th series sheet, but am having no luck. Mind sharing?
