Honus Wagner Bat Barrel card on ebay

2 Attachment(s)
An ebay auction for a Topps Sterling Honus Wagner Game Used Bat Barrel card recently ended on ebay: Link. I did not win or bid on this card.

However, I am curious if this would truly be a bat that Wagner would have used. It looks like a decal bat to me. Would this still be a bat Wagner would have used?

I'm no expert, but I think players might have used decal bats once in a rare while.

Yes, they did in this era.

But there is no way to tell if this particular example is one of those, without seeing the remainder of the Bat.

That price is insane! I just can't see paying that much for a microscopic piece of the bat. Just think of the auto balls or whatever you could get for that price! And IMO to top it off the cards really ugly.

I guess I just don't get this area of collecting.

But it's numbered 1/1!?

Insane. You could buy one sixth of a Brown Lenox T206 for that price! :)

And if it was once a Wagner Gamer, why on earth would they chop it up? And where's the rest of the bat? Will each splinter eventually be hyped as it's own 1 of 1?

Just a ridiculous destruction of something sacred, for the sole purpose of making money. That is, if it was even authentic to begin with!

That card sold for $1,000 more than my intact Honus Wagner decal bat.

Eventually. Or 1/99 or however many they can do as inserts. Most of the bat has probably been used up by now.

Unless the bat was a total wreck I feel bad they cut it up as well. And by total wreck I mean like if a bat broke and the batboy saved a chunk of the barrel. I'm ok with equipment part cards of current guys, they can just use a bat or shirt for an inning or at bat and it's all set. But with old stuff that's special I don't like it. Just insert a redemption card for the actual item. Less work, more attractive to buyers, and more saleable.

Unless most of these game used bat cards just have a random piece of ash from the lumberyard.

I'm not a GU collector; owning a few of those cards is as far as I've ever gone in that field. However, I can't help but wonder where the stuff's coming from, especially with the stories you hear about Halper and others.

In a way, I'd be comforted if a large percentage turned out to be fakes; at least that'd mean fewer baseball relics had been destroyed...

I've seen a few errors, bat bits in a uniform card, a color of uniform cloth that the player never wore.

With all their scandals I'm amazed Upper deck is still around.
Reprinting their own cards for executives 92? High number hockey?
fake cuts
Fake Yugio (Sp?) cards sold to Treat

I saw a show some time ago that showed them making some memorabilia cards. The ones shown were modern stuff, footballs from a superbowl, some average players uniform that looked barely worn.... The tour of the "secure" storage cage for the items they'd bought to use was agonizing though. So much nice stuff destined to be wrecked, and not all of it sports. All tagged with what it was, but just stacked on shelves or the floor of a metal wire room. :(
