BB Magazine

Posted By: joe maples
I know these come in various sizes and are not numbered. This Jennings is 10 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches including the border. On the bottom left corner is printed "Baseball Magazine PHOTOGRAVURE Series 5. In SCD book I only see 1 Hughie Jennings listed in 1910. 1) The size in the book does not correspond with this one, they list 9 x 12 to 9 x 20. Mine is 10 1/2 x 18 1/2. The top to bottom fits into SCD measurements but the side to side is larger than listed.
2) The name is Hugh Jennings on this one, not Hughie. 3) This has a series 5 on the bottom. Was the series always on the bottom and what does it mean?. Any experts on these out there?

Thanks Joe

The average BBM premiums are similar to yours, but distincly different. In particular, the normal premiums have dark brown images. Also, all the ones I've seen weren't photograuvres (vintage type of printing). However, as the the BB Magazine premiums were produced in a variety of sizes over numerous years, yours will likely be cataloged as a BB Magazine premium-- and probably was literally issued as a premium ... As an aside and testiment that they really were premiums, I once bought a small collection of Baseball Magazine Premiums (Cobb, Gehrig, etc). The best part was the collection included the original mailing envelope, return address Baseball Magazine. The envelope was very large and fiber-fill padded, not unlike used by eBayer's today, and would have well protected the premiums shipped flat.

When marketing yours at sale, you can mention that photograuvre printing is unusual for a BBM Premium and photograuvre is a better quality printing than used for most of the premiums the potential buyers will find.

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy
The Baseball Magazine issued premiums over a long period of time. Not only are there many different sizes but some of the issues have been reproduced. The larger Baseball Magazine "posters" were also mailed in a tube. I have also seen several advertising pieces with red lettering. The Honus Wagner advertising piece seems to show up frequently on EBAY.

Patrick
