I usually do not collect 1990's stuff, except when its rare which these are. Just picked these up.

Good stuff, those don't show up too often. I have the Maddux and have only seen a handful pop up here and there.

There's 21 packs of them on Ebay right now.

He/they are relisting them as they didn't sell just a short while ago.
It seems like a healthy price but I know zero about them.

The maddux marble alone has sold between $30 - $130 dollars. It is a healthy price, especially considering what Topps Mylar (no HOFers but more scarce and strong impact on the hobby) has gone for in the past. Cool to see the box though.

I picked up the Ripken marble and checklist card about a year ago

Those are impossible, I have been looking for the Alejandro Pena for 20 years.

Yes. I picked up a Joe carter and have never seen another one since. Every time I've run a search on ebay I get mylar garbage pail kids baloons or the topps allen and Ginter baloons boy relics LOL.

Al, let me know if you'd be interested in selling that Alejandro Pena.

Sierra79 07-14-2017 02:39 PM

I had to wipe the drool off my phone just to type this. NICE!!!

By the way, I understand PSA doesn't grade test issues or proofs, but have you ever thought of having BGS grade them? Have the Mylars, ever been graded by BGS?

I have never had a carded graded. Too old to start now:)

One of my collecting parameters was to try for anything and everything the SCD Standard Catalog listed for Topps baseball through 1994, when the proliferation of product did me in going forward. That included all inserts and test issues, issued or not.

The new Catalogs now only list through 1980 so I have held onto the last complete one, I think from 2011

I have these in my extras pile, I honestly forgot about them till I saw this thread. Heads up, They do have the usual fingerprints that I see on these. Sorry for the crap photo, I just walked down into the archives and just pulled them out to snap a quick photo.. If it's important to you to have a Pena for a player collection we can surely work it out. Always happy to help a fellow 54 member, Shoot me a pm.

Very cool to see a possible conclusion to a 20 year search. Are you a Met's team collector? I am a Cardinals team collector. I'm just glad that there are no Cardinals in the 1990 Topps Mylar set.

I picked up the 3 Cardinals marbles and both checklists a few years ago. Those are fairly tough.

Yup, very dedicated Mets collector. :)

Congrats on the Cards pickup, I still need the last 2 Mets, Lance Johnson and Todd Hundley.

Wow!!! Congrats on picking up the Pena Mylar. That's what it's all about.

I hear you. I've never sent any of my stuff off for grading. I've bought some Maddux cards that were graded, but typically I wouldn't have cared. The only stuff that I set out to buy in graded slabs were my 1987 & 1988 Cubs Canon Maddux team issues, his '91 Desert Shield Topps, his '97 Mirror Black and my Frank Thomas NNOF. Beyond that I'm mostly a binder guy.

I also had to limit my collecting parameters. I don't collect anything of Maddux outside of his playing years, and past '93/94 I'm very limited on what I collect beyond Oddball and Regional and Venezuelans. The only modern cards that I collect beyond that are for my Hall of Fame Binder (one example of each player/manager/executive/ump etc.), which is made up of mostly autographs, vintage, RCs, game used (if it's thin enough) or sketch cards (if they are too obscure). I've found it to be a great way to keep myself going insane from trying to collect everything known to man. Just whoever gets in that year.

What's your toughest card or set that's been dodging you???

ALR-bishop 07-15-2017 06:48 AM

I have been able to finish all the insert sets and issued test sets. Unissued test sets, like the 55 Stamps, 61 Dice, 66 Punch Out, 70 Cloth and 71 Artist Proofs will not be doable except for examples. The 60 and 77 proof cards listed in the Catalog, and the 3 unissued 51 Current All Stars are also a tad problematic :)

I prefer raw also. Although some stuff I will only buy graded (where authenticity is too hard to determine from a picture, like 1990 Donruss Aqueous)

ALR-bishop 07-15-2017 08:48 AM

While I break out many of the graded cards I buy, I agree it makes complete sense to not do so depending on the card.

I have a friend who sometimes posts here who is a dedicated graded post war collector, and I think he has most if not all of the Aqueous cards.

And Jim, ungraded cards are not "raw"', they are in their natural state :-)

Exhibitman 07-19-2017 01:10 PM

Those Mylars are really nice; wonder why they never issued them?

I'm a sucker for space age materials in cards. 3-D, Mylar, acetate, foil, whatever. The more ingenious the use the more interesting I find it.

ALR-bishop 07-19-2017 01:24 PM

My guess Adam is that it was production costs against likely sales. They did not repeat the 68 3D experiment again until 2011 as a small subset of their Lineage line. I know they have the 3Ds out again this year, again on a limited basis.
