Any Baseball Cap Experts?

Anyone know what year or approximate year this cap is from?
Is there a way to tell if this is a player's game used cap or a souvenir cap?
Thanks!

Appears to be a '50s era game model cap. Is anything written under the bill or in any other place inside the cap that would indicate possible player attribution? Saying definitively that a cap is game worn is tough without provenance, but those weren't sold to the general public as they are now so a game model cap showing appropriate wear would normally be offered for sale as a gamer, whether or not it's a certainty.

I used a black light and was able to see a few handwritten letters under the bill, but they are too difficult to read. Couldn't find any other markings or tags.
Thanks!

Could be H G or the number 116

Hank Greenberg!

Butch7999 01-06-2019 03:25 PM

Could that be a "5" to the right of the "HG" (or "116" or "H6")?

Interestingly, Hank Greenberg appears to be the only Tiger player ever, with the initials HG.

Edited to add:

However, Greenberg was with the Tigers from 1933 - 1946, except for 1942 - 1944, when he served in WWII. He went to Pittsburgh in Jan 1947, and played for the Pirates that season. According to Chris Creamer's website, the Tigers wore caps with the orange "D" from 1947 - 1957, so it appears that the cap could not be Greenberg's.

I agree with Steve and believe this cap post-dates Greenberg’s Tiger days (based on style + Tagging).

It could be the uniform number “46” written on the brim (the 4 might have smudged or the ink possibly elongated from sweat). Cap is likely circa mid 1950s. You can check Baseball Almanac to see the Tigers’ players who wore #46 during the 1950s. That would be my first inclination.

I have one just like this, and it's from 1950-52.

Here’s something about the hat maker.

No. 16 was Hal Newhouser.
