Topps 1969

Any 1969 collectors out there ? In addition to Topps regular sets, I also collect any insert or test set they put out for each year. The 1960s and the early 70s were golden years for Topps test and insert issues. For 1969 there were Stamps, 4 in 1s, Deckle, Supers, Decals and even Bowie. There were good variants in the set too, and several different backs. But the set missed a few good men.

Hey Al, great stuff as always. Quick question - what are the Garvey, Simmons, Jackson, Munson cards?

ALR-bishop 07-31-2013 09:57 AM

Cards that never were...

Just custom cards of what might have been.....

Bob Lemke and Keith Conforti and others turn out some great ones. Bob posts many of his on his blog....boblemke.blogspot.com

stlcardsfan 07-31-2013 10:57 AM

I could look at these posts all day, thanks Al. I love that Simmons 69 card. I never understood why Whitey traded him, and we got Darrell Porter as his replacement. I guess he was Whitey's boy from KC. All worked out though as we beat Milwaukee (and Simmons) in 82 W.S.

When I was about 8 in 1974 I got a 61 card (can't remember, it was a common) with a 69 Tommy Helms decal on it. Thought it to be very odd / strange / cool, and maybe worth something, until I found out what is was.

Just got my first decal a couple weeks ago, the Mantle.

HasselhoffsCheeseburger 07-31-2013 11:44 AM

Awesome Al, thanks for sharing. What's the story on the Kuhn card? Never seen one before (I am adsurdly ignorant on pre-80s).

ALR-bishop 07-31-2013 12:27 PM

Kuhn Card

He was elected Commissioner in February of 1969. This "card", which is on thin paper stock was produced by Topps presumably for his personal use, maybe like the 1990 Bush card and the two single Joe Garagiola business cards from 1976 and 1991. The back has personal bio info on Kuhn

Interesting, thanks. I find the oddball/test stuff more interesting than the regular issues.

1969 Topps

Al,

Great stuff as always. Is your Bush card the more rare Type 1 or Type 2?

Z Wheat

ALR-bishop 07-31-2013 02:01 PM

Bush

Got it some time back so sure it must be the "common" version. But have never seen the "premium" version in person so not sure of all the differences. If there are as many as now seems, it is amazing to me that no autographed version has ever shown up. Many/Most of the Garagiloas have autos. Given it was a business card that is not too surprising, but wonder what an authentic Bush auto on one of his "premium" cards would bring.

I am not a graded collector but it is one card I would not buy in it's natural state. There are bound to be fakes coming if not already out there

Bush Topps

Al,

The Type 1 is glossy. Here is the article describing these cards:

Bush Card

Have read the articles and do not doubt there seem to be two kinds of cards out there. Like everything else the best way to appreciate differences is to see them in person. Wonder if there are examples now in Chicago

GasHouseGang 07-31-2013 05:30 PM

Al, I remember having those stickers like the Aaron you show. Didn't those come with the regular cards in one of the series? I just don't recall what series they might have been with. I know I had some stuck on items around my room.:)

Great stuff

Two things I want to add to my Pirates collection is the '69 Topps Team Poster, and a Super (probably Blass, because right now the Clemente is out of reach).
Posts like this keep me excited about collecting.

67_Palmer 08-02-2013 07:32 AM

That Yankees poster is great.

ALR-bishop 08-02-2013 07:54 AM

69 Posters

I have a set of them and they are huge. In an earlier thread there was discussion about how to display them or the 68 and 72 posters and other big Topps insert items. I ended getting artist display portfolios for all those. The one for the 69 team posters is gigantic

Glad to see you posting more Al. Never get tires of seeing your stuff. It looks like the art portfolio thing worked well for you. All I have is 2 of the 68s and this 69. I couldn't justify the expense and instead when the top loaded route. This giant posters would have been amazing as a kid--when I would not have been opposed to tacking them to the wall. Now, as a collector, they are a bit on the inconvenient side to own.

Troy Kirk 08-02-2013 11:28 PM

Great stuff as always, Al. I'm sure that Penny's poster is not vintage, though. I've been seeing a lot of those posters for various 60s products over the past few months. They are cool looking, but they kind of bug me because they seem to be created to fool people into thinking they are real.

ALR-bishop 08-03-2013 06:23 AM

Lenny's

It is a copy. But it was offered clearly as such. Thought it an interesting item to put with set. I often get copies of old advertisements about Topps products to put with my sets. Keep articles about sets or products with them as well

Troy Kirk 08-03-2013 09:36 PM

I actually don't think it's a copy, I think it is a made up piece that never was. These are popping up for Beatles cards, for Penny's, McCrory's, and other card sets. I think I saw 1956 Topps baseball too. They all look the same, just the card set is changed and sometimes the store selling is changed too. They are cool looking, but I'm sure they are not copies of anything that was ever made by Topps.

ALR-bishop 08-04-2013 08:21 AM

Things that never were

You may be right Troy. I had not seen the other stuff. There are several people who create cards that never were as mentioned earlier in this thread. When available, I get those too and put them in a section in the back of my set binders. But it is good to know if you are dealing with copies or creativity

mojorob 08-14-2013 09:40 AM

Does anyone here know or remember back in 1969 which Inserts came with which Series?

I'm under the impression of the following:

1rst Series No Inserts
2nd Series Deckles
3rd Series Deckles
4th Series Decales
5th Series No Inserts
6th & 7th Series No Inserts

Please correct me if you know or suspect oher wise.
Thanks!

Rich Klein 08-14-2013 12:32 PM

my hazy memory

I thought deckles were series 3 and perhaps 4 and the decals were series 5

smtjoy 08-14-2013 01:04 PM

Good info, I always liked the 1969 set and inserts. My examples-

Like the posters in 1967 and the game cards in 1968
the deckle cards were introduce in 3rd series packs and run through
series 4 and 5 the decals came from the united kingdom and were
introduced later however i do remember some of the original 10 cent
pack from late 1969 having both

mojorob 08-14-2013 01:53 PM

Fabulous Clemente Examples Scott!!

Thanks Jose, for your take on the inserts.
Do you think it possible that the Decales could have been the 5th Series, or are you positive that 5th series Topps was still going strong with the Deckles?

I also wanted to pose the question for anyone that may know.
Is it possible that the 6th & 7th series were issued together in the same packs?
Or are there distinct 7th series packs?

Also, I was under the impression that the 6th & 7th series wax, did not have any inserts.
Am I perhaps mistaken in that thought?

I do realize that Topps was doing a little mixing and matching with some of these inserts, in different parts of the country,
as I have a friend that has a 2nd Series Wax Pack with a Decale Insert, although I do believe this is a very rare case.

Nice stash Kirk,
the boxes and packs take me back to november 1969 when i did my 1st show ever at the market place in Buena Park Cal, i was known as the kid from then on
i was 19 then and all the other dealers were much older than me i remember
So Cal legends like Frank Kish, Will Davis who is believed to have opened the
very 1st card shop in So Cal and i think David Kohler Sr, at that show i sold
a lot packs, and here is a crazy true story i broke several of those six-packs
to refill my 2 wax boxes when they run low,, great pics Kirk you took me down
memory lane way back.

Jose,

Interesting post ..... you've been at it a long time!!
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
I appreciate it.

Beautiful Photos

Kirk, Thank you for posting those photos. Those boxes and cards are simply amazing. I cannot imagine how much fun it must have been to open those up.

lahmejoon 08-18-2013 09:24 PM

For a super display, Kirk has a thread at the Collectors Universe forum. Truly remarkable display of 60's & 70's baseball and football.

Troy Kirk 08-24-2013 06:50 PM

Really amazing 1969 Topps pictures, Kirk, thanks for posting them. I like it that you took them on the carpet, it takes me back to 1969 when I was 10 years old and had my own stacks of 1969 cards on the floor in my living room, looking through them on a rainy day, listening to the Mamas and the Papas singing "Monday Monday" and seeing a card of Rick Monday. I never had the boxes, though, they are cool to see.

mojorob 08-25-2013 01:42 PM

Troy,

Kind of interesting, as I notice:

We're both the same age.

Share the same name.

Both collected 69 Topps Baseball with stacks on the carpeting.

Both use to listened to the Mama's & The Papa's.

Both Big Detroit Tiger fans.

As fellow 10 year olds, we probably both dreamed of being in that bath tub with Michelle Phillips.
Or maybe that was just me. LOL

Well it's highly unlikely she was California dreaming about being in that tub with you two:)

quitcrab 08-30-2013 05:59 AM

Didn't see any 1969 topps super square cut proofs..Now they are cool!

By the way I collect vinyl albums..pretty crazy in this ipod world.

The Momma and the Pappas album comes in two different variations....if you find it without the toilet covered up its worth a lot more!
To think someone thought it was offensive to have a toilet on the front of an album cover.

ALR-bishop 08-30-2013 06:41 AM

Variations

Wow. I thought I was bad about variations. Are you sure the uncovered version is not a print defect ? :)

JollyElm 08-30-2013 02:16 PM

It's been 40+ years and I still can't figure out why someone added apostrophes to their name on that album cover. It makes no sense! The Mama's & The Papa's????????????

Troy Kirk 10-26-2013 04:48 PM

My collection is sadly lacking in 1969 Topps decals. These pictures show what happened to the originals from my collection. I don't think I have any unstuck 1965 Ugly Stickers either.
