Players who didn't appear in Topps sets

Posted By: Chris Counts
Maury Wills is the best known example of player who was not issued cards in Topps sets (from '60 to '66) ... does anybody have a complete list of the players and why their cards weren't issued? The reason I am asking is that I came across Dick Hall's stats from the mid-60s and I was surprised to discover he was one of the best relievers in baseball. And yet I don't recall cards of him in any of the sets from '64 to '66. I realized how much I depend on Topps cards for my baseball knowledge of the 50s and 60s ...

Another player I recall didn't have any cards was Tony Horton. Does anybody know the story about why Hall's or Horton's cards weren't issued? And can anybody name any other players whose cards were omitted?

Posted By: Paul
I don't have a list, but there are quite a few other cards that "should have been", even after Topps got its monopoly in 1956. The most famous are Stan Musial (no 1956-57 or regular 1958) and Ted Williams (1959-60). One that you never hear mentioned is Frank Robinson in 1976 - still an active player, but no card. It also would have been nice to see Dick Allen on a 1977 Topps card as a member of the A's.

Posted By: Chris Counts
Alan,

Thanks for providing the link. I actually created a couple of those "fantasy" cards ...

While there were many big name players who didn't appear on Topps cards from 1951 to 1955, there are relatively few after that. I seem to recall that Jerry Kindall was another guy who had a falling-out with Topps. His last card is a 1963 Topps. He should have been included in the '64 and '65 sets. I heard his inclusion in the '63 Fleer set had something to do with his omission. The same circumstances seem to be the case for Joe Adcock, the rarest card in the '63 Fleer set. He, like Hall, is omitted from the '64 to '66 sets ...

Curiously, somebody even went so far as to make a '64 card of Kindall ...

www.twinscards.com/viewcardsdetail.php?cardnum=4258

Posted By: bobw
I remember him being announced at a Yankee Old Timers Day years ago before he passed away and saying "Who's He?" as I had never seen a card of him. I found out later that he played from 1959 to 1965 with several teams averaging about 25 appearances a year. He also had 18 saves with the 1962 Yankees in his best season. I always thought that Al Downing was the only African American pitcher on the Yankees.

Posted By: Jim VB
Wow! I hadn't heard the name Marshall Bridges in a long time. As a long time Yankee fan, I do remember him, but didn't even realize he didn't have a Topps card. Here he is on a Challenge the Yankees game card.

Posted By: Jason L
How did you design those cards?!?!?!
Are those all just digital images, or did you actually create cards? Some of those look autographed!
Please help me understand!

Because if some of those are out there, I would love to get some copies! -or learn to make my own, digitally.

Thanks!
Jason

Posted By: Chris Counts
Jason,

I made them with Photoshop. It's pretty easy to do (I created the '40 Play Ball "Negro League" cards), but printing them out to look like real cards is a much bigger trick. They look far better on the screen than they do in your hand. Still, they look as good as many of the bad fakes we see daily here on the forum ...

I'd offer it to you, but I know you don't like the shiny stuff.

(don't mean to hi-jack this thread, but after all I don't think Goofy appeared in a Topps set.)
