Yeah...that recent one went crazy! I finally picked up the Olympic Heroes one of him putting the shot recently...it is indeed a tough one to purchase. Hardly ever see it for sale. I posted the other postcard with Thorpe/Tewanima/Warner so have both now. Makes me think about getting my Thorpe postcard like the one that went 6 grand graded...it’s in pretty good shape..I’d sure take that price if mine was graded an 8(which I’m sure it wouldn’t)

I’m an Oklahoman as well. The Thorpe signed 33 Goudey Sportkings that I posted in this thread currently resides with me in Ardmore. I also have a signed leather footprint that Thorpe signed and wrote his mailing address on from when he was fitted for some custom moccasins.

On May 18, 1912 Thorpe participated in the Olympic Trials at Celtic Park in NY and secured his spot in the Pentathlon by winning convincingly. On May 24 & 25 he was supposed to compete in the Decathlon trials but when he and just 1 other competitor showed up the event was cancelled and he was later on added to the team based on his performance in the pentathlon trials and reputation as an all around track athlete. In his book ‘Jim Thorpe-A Biography’ William A. Cook writes that Thorpe’s final event prior to the Olympics came on June 8 at the Eastern Olympic Tryouts in Cambridge. In addition to a newspaper article I possess(can’t find it!) in which it states that Thorpe was leaving NY to travel to the Olympic Trials in Cambridge for the selection of the Olympic team that day confirms that Thorpe was in attendance at Cambridge on June 8th. The committee took the winners that day at the Eastern Trials as automatic qualifiers and then filled in the events with other athletes. That is how Thorpe made it in the high jump and long jump and Pentathlon without competing in them at the Trials. The selection was done on June 8 after the day’s competition was over. Following is a program, ticket and panoramic photo(43in X 6.7in) of all the athletes who was up for selection and the officials involved. The photo provided is a photo of a photo as the actual photo is rolled up right now and I don’t want to damage it any further. Ive added the description of the photo from when I bought it. I’ve bought a frame from the 1910’s to have the photo framed but will have a professional do it as they know how to steam them before unrolling them to prevent tears. I know there is a participation/placers certificate and medals from this event...sure would like to add those to this group. I know Thorpe is not in the program nor competed but he most certainly was in attendance so it represents a huge chapter in his life!

When I said he was added to the team in the Pentathlon I meant the Decathlon! He would be in the photo though. However, I have not scrutinized it to see if he can be identified.

I was about to head off to his Olympic stuff when I came across this 1908 14th Annual Penn Relays Program...kind of forgot about it! Thorpe competed in the Hurdles and high jump at this meet and won the high jump. 1908 was still early in his track career for sure. Thorpe actually tried out for the 1908 Olympics in the high jump but did not make the team while his teammates Louis Tewanima and Frank Mount Pleasant did.

To get the athletes and officials to the 1912 Olympics the Olympic committee rented the SS Finland to get them all there. A small track was installed, pool installed with harness for the swimmers among other things to allow the athletes to train. The discus throwers even drilled a hole in a discus and attached a rope to it and threw it it off the deck and then retrieved it with the rope! I have many favorite things in my collection but this one might be at the very top considering I’m a track guy! This is a passenger list for the SS Finland for the sailing to the Olympics! Only seen one of these in the years I’ve been collecting. Check out General Patton on the list also as he participated in the modern pentathlon in the 1912 Olympics!

I’ll have to back track later to show my inauguration of the stadium ticket and opening day ticket for the 1912 Olympics..just can’t locate them right now. I have several tickets for various events that Jim Thorpe was at and the one shown here is for July 12, 1912 when he long jumped 22ft 7in to place 7th that day. 2nd picture shows era real photo postcards of the SS Finland that took the team to the Olympics, 3rd and 4th photo shows various views of the Olympic stadium, 5th photo is of a stadium press pin that whoever interviewed him had to have been wearing and an ashtray sold as a souvenir and then lastly more cards. These particular cards have 2 sides so last 2 photos are of same cards and their reverse sides.

In 1912 the Decathlon was a 3 day event that started on July 13th and finished on July 15th. It is a 2 day event now. This ticket is a stadium ticket for the first day of the Decathlon competition. The 2nd picture is of a stadium plaque depicting the entrance of the stadium that is one of 2 bronze plaques considered at the time to be the top souvenir offered at the games. Last picture is of more cards in my collection.

This next ticket is for day 2 of 3 days of the Decathlon...hope to get a ticket for the third day someday! After 3rd event on day 1 Thorpe took the lead and never relinquished it! 2nd photo are pages from a baseball magazine that came out just before the Olympics. 3rd/4th picture is of a Swedish Olympic program that has a map of venues, restaurants etc...5th photo is of a stamp that was sold for raising money for the Olympics and also a photo of Thorpe at Olympics taken by ‘The N.Y.H. Service’.

Never seen that! Did that come out of a magazine? I’m not familiar with what a Fashion Plate is...can you tell us more about its origin?

Sure. Back in the day, clothing retailers would have large, fashion books highlighting the latest clothing lines along with fabric samples for customers to select from. The pages were made of thick cardboard about 16”x 20” which is the size of this plate. To ad some variety to the book, manufacturers would include some pages of interest other than simply fabric and clothes. This piece is framed and matted, but as I recall, the back of it had fabric swaths on it. There is one fashion plate that I’ve seen but I don’t own, that pictures one of the Yankees teams of the 1920’s. I own two other plates, one is a generic baseball player in his uniform with the same player next to him in a suit and straw hat. The other is a generic golfer in the latest golf fashion. There are some plates out there that picture famous players, such as Ty Cobb, modeling suits, etc. These usually bring pretty good money. These are really getting hard to find.

This is an original Bain photo of Thorpe throwing at the AAU All Around Championships on September 2; 1912. I had not looked at this photo in 10 years and I originally posted it here as an Olympic photo but I just realized Thorpe was not in his Olympic uniform but his Carlisle uniform so he is actually competing at Celtic Park in the photo! Really kind of thrilled because I did not think I had an original item from that meet!...first 2 photos show front and back of it. Photo 3 has some oddball items, 4th photo is of a watch fob souvenir, a pin and a bronze plaque of the stadium from the Olympics. Rest of the photos are of various stickers and cards that are primarily foreign issues. I’ve taken front and back of them and they are in same order so you can compare fronts to their backs. The very last photo is of items with blank backs except for the pep stamp.

I commented in the postcard thread that I have a few photos of Native American Olympians in my archives. There was a reply that someone would like to see some of them. I thought this may be the appropriate place to show them. I have the 1912 Olympics postcard of Thorpe, but it was already posted so no reason for me to post mine. I picked it up in Sweden from someone who had multiples of almost every card in the set. I have also seen the complete set of cards in a display at the Gothenburg Sports Museum which has one of the largest collections of 1912 Olympics memorabilia. The collection was amassed by 1952 and 1956 Olympian Lars Hindmar. I met him at the World Olympic Collector's Fair in Gothenburg where he was still purchasing items at 94 years of age. As I collect Olympic photographs and autographs I generally pass on other items unless they are part of a lot that has photos or the price is ridiculously low and I can make a few dollars to purchase more for my archives. I have a large number of photos of Pre-WWI Olympians and many more of Pre-WWII Olympians. If I have one and someone would like to see a scan let me know. Anyway here are some interesting ones:
Amasoli Patasoni - A Zuni from New Mexico. He went to Haskell Institute in Kansas. Competed in the 10,000m and Cross Country Race at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp. Very little is known about him, not even his date of death. Two photos from 1920 and one from 1922 Frank Mount Pleasant - Member of the Tuscarora Nation in New York. He attended The Carlisle School and Dickinson College. He competed in the long jump and triple jump at the 1908 Olympics. He coached football at the Indiana Normal School, now Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 1911-1913. Photo shows him competing in the long jump at the 1908 Olympic Trials. Wilson 'Buster' Charles - Member of the Oneida Tribe. He attended Haskell Institute where he played on the football and basketball teams. He competed in the decathlon at the 1932 Olympics. Photo shows him competing in the Olympics. Clarence 'Taffy' Abel - Member of the Soo Nation. He won a silver medal in ice hockey at the 1924 Olympics. He is also the only Native American to carry the United States flag at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics. He would join the NHL and become the first American Olympian to win the Stanley Cup when he did it with the New York Rangers in 1928. Photo shows him in 1924 with the Olympic team manager. Lewis Tewanima - A member of the Hopi Nation. He attended The Carlisle School and was a classmate of Jim Thorpe. He competed in the 1908 and 1912 Olympics. He won a silver medal in the 10,000m in Stockholm. The first photo shows him with a group of U.S. athletes on their way to Stockholm in 1912. He can be seen in the back row. Sitting in the front row with a stuffed bear in one hand and a cigarette in the other is Howard Drew. One of the great early Black runners. He would twice set a world record in the 100 yard dash. The person sitting two away from his right appears to be Andrew Sockalexis, though I cannot confirm as I do not own a photo of him. The second photo shows him leading in the final of the 10,000 meter race. Lastly a Culver Archive reprint of Thorpe from the Olympic Meet in New York, June 12, 1912 at Highland Park. |

Runred41 - The item from Nicaragua is called a souvenir sheet to stamp collectors. The reprint photo you have with Thorpe just above the souvenir sheet was taken June 12, 1912 at the Olympic tune up meet at Highland Park in New York City.. This was a Bain News Service photo. I have the right and left continuations of this photo. There are four members of the New York Athletic Club to the left of Thorpe. The two in the middle are brothers Ben Adams and Platt Adams. They both won medals in Stockholm. Other athletes in this photo are Hal Heiland, Xavier Athletic Club, on the far right, George Horine, Olympic Club, next to him, Tell Berna, Cornell, second from the left and Walter McClure, Multnomah Athletic Club, third from the left.

Here are some more track photos. The semi-nude photos are right after the Olympics. Sports scientists which was in its infancy took body measurements of Thorpe for reference due to his dominating performance in the Olympics. I did get permission from Leon to post them.

Another Native American. Tom Longboat, member of the Onondaga Nation in Canada. Won the 1907 Boston Marathon. He was allowed to compete for Canada at the 1908 Olympics despite very questionable amateur status. He would drop out at 20 miles. The postcard shows the marathoners leaving the grounds of Windsor Castle with Longboat (#72) at the lead on the left. Behind him is Dorando Pietri (#19) who was disqualified for being helped across the finish line at Wembley Stadium. This postcard was mailed from London to A. Roy Welton, the fourth place finisher in the race and the runner at the extreme right in the photo. I acquired Welton's 1908 Olympic scrapbooks which included this postcard, his Olympic competitor's numbers, his 1908 Boston Marathon number and 100 pages of newspaper articles on the Olympics.

After the Olympics the track team went on a 3 track meet and reception tour before returning to the U.S. One of those meets was on July 23, 1912 at Parc Pommery near Reims, France. Interesting to note is that a rested Jim Thorpe won the 100M Hurdles at the meet defeating Fred Kelly who was the Olympic champ. In a reception given by Coubertin the team and dignitaries were given bronze medallions/plaques to commemorate the event. Following is a postcard of Parc Pommery track meet and a medallion from the reception.

This is a 1912 Olympic Games Report Book Presentation Edition. It is one of 2500 deluxe copies that was bound in leather. These copies were presented to special dignitaries and financiers for the Olympics. This copy is attributed to Herman Gotthardt who was a world renowned art collector of Swedish, Finnish, Danish and Norwegian art who helped finance the Olympics. These presentation editions along with those sold to the general public without the leather covers are some of the very few reports that list James Thorpe as winner of Pentathlon and Decathlon as early January 1913 is when the professional baseball scandal broke which led to his disqualification at the time. Any report after January 1913 didn’t list him as the winner. This one is in fantastic condition.

My collecting focus is to try to recreate through items/memorabilia from events of Jim Thorpe’s life. Although this medal is not attributed to Thorpe himself..the following was a medal given to the victorious athletes from the citizens of NY upon their return from the Olympics. Thorpe would have received one just like it. The medal had a horizontal top bar with a pin in order to attach it to one’s clothing. I’ve been fortunate to pick up 2 of these. I’ve seen a pennant that was sold to commemorate the occasion also..just didn’t win that one. On the front it says...’New York Greetings’. On the back it says..’Presented By The Citizens Of The City Of New York Commemorating The “Home Coming” Of The Victorious American Team From The Olympic Games Stockholm 1912’

I am a keen collector of 1912 Olympic memorablia icluding Jim Thorpe. I have a very nice book printed in 1912, in fact an extra copy if someone would be interested. I also have a booklet with Jim Thorpe.

Just received a signed copy of ‘Fabulous Redmen’ by John Steckbeck which I purchased off Amazon without a picture. Was pleasantly surprised to see someone else scribbled their name too.
