91 Topps Glow/No Glow backs

These have been discussed on here before about how the red ink on the backs of some 91 Topps cards glow under Black Light. About 20% of the cards I have the backs glow. I bought all these cards(wax packs) locally back in the day.

I have been trying to put a complete set of the glowing backs together. Has anyone else done this or is interested in doing it? Thanks for any info or trades to get me closer to a complete set.

I have the following doubles for trade only till I get my set together.
10, 50, 80, 105, 110, 114, 119, 123, 132, 134(2), 135(2), 144, 164, 168, 170, 173, 175, 183, 186, 187, 190, 195, 199(2), 202, 208, 215, 217, 218, 223, 232, 235, 242, 244, 248, 249,252, 262, 265, 268, 271, 276, 285, 293, 327, 341, 342, 343, 354, 360, 370, 378, 382, 384, 385, 409, 418, 421, 424, 432, 447(2), 459, 483, 489, 492(2), 509, 511(2), 517, 522, 524, 538, 547, 548, 552, 553, 580, 583, 587, 595, 597, 608, 609, 624, 647, 650, 655(2), 671, 672, 686, 695, 705, 710, 716, 719, 728, 731, 732, 736, 738, 741, 744, 745, 746(3), 747, 748(3), 749, 751, 752(2), 753(3), 754(2), 756(4), 757(3), 758(2), 759(4), 760(2), 761(2), 762, 763, 764, 766, 767(2), 768, 769(2), 770(2), 771, 772(3), 773, 777, 781, 782(2), 783, 784(3), 785(3), 787, 788(3), 789(3), 791(2), 792(3)

1991

In my view the Topps 1991 sets, including Desert Shield set, have more front and back variants by far than any other Topps set. To my knowledge there is no truely complete master set list. I gave up personally. I did try to assemble all the bold versus faded back emblems, but have not cataloged my glow versus no glow backs as between my regular an DS sets. Nor do I know which of the many cataloged front and back variations can be found with all as opposed to just one or two different backs.

I will be out of town much of October but would be willing to figure how many glow versus no glow backs I have in my sets when I get back if that would aid your task

I am not trying to do a master set. My only thing is if the red on the back glows or not. Then get rid of all my extras and non glow/non variation cards to shrink my collection down a little. I am guessing a master set of 91 Topps would be well over 5000 cards.

Yes Al any help would be greatly appreciated.

I sorted mine from a fairly large batch. Maybe 10-15000 cards. Plus another 3000 or so after that.

The glow is on both the dark logo and normal logo, and I'm pretty sure it will be all of both sets. I'm fairly close.

I haven't tried to check on variations yet, my notes included variations I'd found but that wasn't at all complete.

The ones that glow a very dark red also come with either back, but are not at all common. I have maybe 25 or so from each group.
The slightly reactive cardstock is also not easy to find.

And I haven't done any work on different reactions of the front ink. I do have a couple where the gloss reacts mildly green. I sort of stopped when I found those and realized I'd have to go back through the whole thing.

Ben,

I should be able to meet some of your needs when I have time to get back to my storage unit where I had to put my 91 inventory (among other things) when I moved. Below I cut and pasted a previous post I made on another thread to help ease your search as I've found every factory 91 set I've opened have contained all glow back cards. Considering there's probably one in your area on craigslist for $10 you'll probably be able to accomplish your goal tomorrow :)

From previous thread:

I have put together both a complete glow set and a complete non-glow set without bold back logos. Bold back logos were found only on A & B sheet cards. Putting together a glow set is the easier of the two because I found in my research that every factory set I opened (approx. 10) had only glow back cards. Perhaps others can check their 91 factory sets as well to confirm this. In my opinion this would mean a much smaller number of non-glow sets exist since they would have to be put together by hand. While non glow sets may be in smaller quantities than the glow sets, I have not found that to be the case with singles obtained through packaged products. I have gone through a ton of rack packs, cello packs, wax packs, vending boxes, etc. and found that the glow backs outnumbered the non-glow backs only by about 60-40.

I have also put together a complete non-glow set with bold back logos. I am, however, still missing some glow back/bold back cards leaving that set incomplete. I am 100% confident they exist I just haven't come across a few of them. In the 20,000+ 91s I've obtained I have about twice as many non-glow bold backs as I do glow bold backs. This leads me to believe the glow back bold back cards are the most difficult to obtain.

The glow back / bold back cards that still need to be confirmed are:

#144, 271, 502, 505, 532, 542, 546, 563, 564, 574, 591, 610, 667, 671, 727, 746, 768, 774, 783, 792.

I would be interested in those if anyone has any.

Joe thank you for the info. Now that I know all the factory sets glow it took the fun out of putting together a set.

I looked and do not have any glow back/bold backs on your list. From all the boxes of wax packs I opened I never got a single bold back card. The only one I have now is in my Wade Boggs PC and it glows.

I'm not sure if this info will lead to anything re: glowing backs (I bought a black light and couldn't tell the difference), but over the years I have noticed that 1991 Topps printings seem to fall under two categories: cards found in "Bubble Gum Cards" packaging seem to be of different printing origin than cards found in "Picture Cards" packaging. Several variations only appear in certain types of packaging as well.

I've opened wax packs, rack packs, and cellos where they have been mixed with both glow and non-glow in the same packaging. It was always the same though, cards printed with glow ink were on cards from the same sheets throughout the entire box, that is, cards from sheets A-D may have non-glow throughout the same box, but cards from sheets E-F would have glow throughout the box, or vice versa. Factory sets and vending boxes were never mixed.

Did anybody get a good hit out of anything you opened. I got 1 1989 common in all the wax packs I opened.

Jack Glenn of New York, NY won the grand prize of all 40 complete sets from 1952-91.

I don't recall how much I opened, but I got exactly nothing.

1991

I had not heard whether the grand prize was won or not. I still have a couple of unopened boxes. Cards from 1952 through 1956, and cards with a then book value of $ 50 or more had to be redeemed by mail. Cards that I saw were not in top condition. But Topps did obtains three full set runs, one for the grand prize, then one for individual set winners, and one for the single card inserts in packs or through winner cards

jacksoncoupage 10-02-2014 10:43 AM

Does anyone have a picture or own a winning game card? Even for the lower tier prizes? The cards state that they will have an X on them.

Winning 1991 Contest Game cards

I do not have one. There used to be some pictured here but not now. I have a near complete set of the A,B, C and D cards ( 264) ...missing only 12411 ( A), 12478 ( B) and 12545 ( D)

I have put together a handful of "near sets" of these and there were always 5-6 that I could never find, I'm willing to bet those are your numbers.

Too bad they pulled the image, I've always wanted to see one. I used to think the "SP" numbers were X----- rather than A----- etc etc.

Bah, I should have posted this here instead of the other link ...

Regarding the glow light test. Based upon this pic:

http://www.mycollectionofcards.com/b...029_151049.jpg

Are there 4 glow back variations we can chase?

Also, does anyone out there have either of the 2 cansecos (regular and all star versions) that don't glow ... or glow and have the lighter cardboard background?

steve B 10-29-2015 04:40 PM

Darn, I replied in the other thread first.....

Should I copy it into here or just leave well enough alone.

Or ....

Is it possible for a moderator to move a post?

Perhaps you aren't using a strong enough black light.....or the room isn't completely dark. The floursecing red ink should be obvious when you are looking at a glow back......

I wonder if factory sets and Desert Shield cards were printed close to the same time in the production run, as this would explain both of these anomalies.

Yeah, I think I have at least one of those Cansecos, but now I guess I am going to have to go back into my collection and see if there are multiple glow variations...sigh.

This is the never ending project. I am so frustrated from reading this post and the other one, I think I will go right out and buy an unopened '91 box on eBay. :)

I have piles of these damn things and would still gladly send them to you so you didn't have to waste money on unopened material and risk a paper cut.:D

mouschi 11-02-2015 07:56 PM

Ok, so I went on ebay and scooped up a pile of 1991 topps Cansecos both all stars and regulars. I now have the following:

Regular Canseco lighter back glow
Regular Canseco darker back glow
All Star Canseco lighter back glow
All Star Canseco darker back glow
All Star Canseco no glow

Does anyone here have a regular Canseco no glow that they could sell me?

JoeDfan 11-03-2015 09:42 AM

Oh, yeah. I forgot about that. I can check my cards tonight, and if I have one, you can have it.

Actually, I just checked, and all four of the ones I found are the glow backs. :(

bummer thanks for checking for me!
